Practice makes Perfectionist - Kin-Kin - Sep 04 2016

She knew what she could do now, and although she hadn't quite grasped any more than the spell's basics, she was getting there. Practice makes perfect; and that was what she was doing right now. The wolf had wanted something beautiful to the eye and fear-inducing to the weak of heart. Something of splendour and elegance equal to her own. And she'd found it, in the crystals of Origin Cave.

Sharp as a knife and yet often beautiful, Kin-Kin hoped to one day put even the naturally-formed crystals in the caverns to shame. Combined with her dancing lights, who knows what wonders she'd one day be able to create?

Kin-Kin marveled at the vivid daydreams with a smirk patterning her fine, gilded features.

For the first time in a while, the she-wolf had something new to train for. In the very centre of Polaris with glowing crystals jeering all around, Kin-Kin remembered again that she was the magickal champion of Origin caves, and that this was going to be the next thing to blow everyone else away.

True, she'd only managed once, but no-one else was going to know that... now, were they?

Settling down on her haunches, Kin-Kin dropped her head to her chest and focused on her gem. she tapped into the magic held within as a gentle glow spread throughout her like wind washing over a field of wheat.

Although this soft glow swept over her, there was nothing else. The ground didn't twitch or tremble, and there wasn't the gleam of quartz in sight. Kin-Kin sighed, trying not to seem disappointed. It would seem she was back at square one...

RE: Practice makes Perfectionist - Pharoah - Sep 04 2016

He'd been spending a lot of time in Polaris lately what with the passing of the Magicka Competition and the meeting of many new gembounds he hardly wanted to leave. He was all about schmoozing others and seeing what he could get out of them after they became "friends". Still, with befriending others he was shocked to find that he didn't really... feel, anything. Sure, he liked to talk to others and found enjoyment out of the things they did but no other emotions came to him. No sense of bonding or commitment. Nothing past his initial feeling of entertainment. If everyone he'd befriended fell off of a cliff and died well... he wouldn't particularly care. Well, a little he might because then he'd have to find some other way to while away his hours. A bit of an inconvenience it would be.

He chuffed out of his mouth, a strange sound that was a mix of frustration and confusion at his own lack of emotions. Was this normal? He saw others that seemed to be ga-ga over each other and some that were inseparable at the hip... but he? Nothing like that. Sure, he knew how to mimic the emotions to make others think he felt that way but they never reached his heart and never bound him down. An advantage but also... different. He shook his head, trying to dislodge the thoughts in his mind as he focused on what he was doing now... Which was searching for someone or something to amuse him. He needed something to do now besides chase his thoughts around in circles because of the phenomena of his lack of real loving sensations.

In the distance he could see something shimmering, glowing. It was a different glow than the crackling Spire in the room, this one was golden and attracted him to it. He extended his long-legged gait into a trot as he approached this new thing. His body was still youthful, still he hadn't grown into his legs and he still had a tiny bit of puppy-chub at his belly but it was clear that he would be a slim fellow upon reaching his full size. No one could deny the handsomeness of his features though with his split face and that contagious grin upon his maw as he approached what he could see now was another canine.

Now, upon hatching and meeting Hawke and Septiezal he knew what "Cute" was and when he met Arkrael he knew what "Strong" was. Never before though had he seen "Beautiful" and stirred up strange emotions in his young heart. He didn't feel commitment or anything of the sort but he did feel... something, that was different than the norm. Her glowing fur and gilded coat had his eyes tracing up and down her form despite himself and it was a few moments before he caught what he was doing and stopped to meet her rosen-hued gaze. Ah, what gorgeous eyes. He wanted her on his size... Needed to add her to his arsenal of "friends" so that he would have "Beautiful" all for himself.

The hound's tail wagged as he heard her sigh. So, was she upset? He could work this to his advantage. "Oh my, is that your magick? It's so beautiful... then again, it might just be you. It looks like your coat is made of gold." He turned his muzzle away as if he had become too shy to speak further. "Sorry... I've just never seen anything like it but what should I expect from the winner of the Magicka Competition?" Oh yes, he remembered her now. The first place winner of the competition. No doubt she already knew of her magical prowess and beauty but it didn't hurt to dote. Mayhaps it would put him in her favor.

RE: Practice makes Perfectionist - Kin-Kin - Sep 04 2016

Kin-Kin's ears slowly pricked, and she opened her eyes as the sound of a voice broke through the formerly serene atmosphere. The lady blinked her eyes slowly, before resting wholly on them with a half-lidded gaze full of mirth. Impressed? By that alone?

By the looks of it, they were only a pup. She was probably a hero in their eyes.

At that thought, Kin-Kin couldn't help but let out a cheeky giggle. "Hmph! That's only a warmup, for me," she assured them, shrugging her shoulders so that her cape fell down around her sides. Not too far from the truth, but she hadn't been trying to glow. What a first sight a crystal forming right in front of them would have been! But alas, she wasn't quite well versed enough to reliably do something like that. But by the tone of voice and the look in their eye, she alone was phenomenal enough! "Hah... You haven't seen the half of me yet, kid!"

she spoke the words coolly and casually, examining the claws on one of her paws. The vanity dripping from her gestures was so thick it was almost tangible.

"Oh? You were there, huh?" That was an interesting tidbit. She wondered what they thought. Had they been truly blown away? What was she thinking? Of course they had. The wolf only seemed to be making herself worse as time went on.

"You lookin' for me to teach you some moves, kid?"

Kin-Kin wrapped her tail around her forepaws, bejeweled chest puffed out, and winked, eyeing them closely. For a child, they sure had an odd tone about them. But even still, the wolf felt it'd be best to play things by ear... whether adoring fan or child genius, she could handle any of it. But if they were flirting with her, well... that was another question entirely.

The mischievous wolf did so love to play.

RE: Practice makes Perfectionist - Pharoah - Sep 04 2016

The she-wolf seemed to eat his praise right up as she turned around to him and began to speak in an obviously prideful tone. Compliments seemed the way to go then. Good to know. "Really?" He said in wonder, looking for all the world like an awestruck child. "I'd love to see more." He said with a grin. He wasn't completely lying though... He was interested to see if this one could be "Strong" as well as "Beautiful". A double dose of useful... something he could very much well do with.

Very very confident in her abilities this one seemed as he watched her actions like a hawk. "I was! I remember your act very well! It was one of the best magicka tricks I'd ever seen! I was really impressed!" No lie though, that show was something he'd never seen before. He wanted to know if it was something that he would ever be able to do... but he doubted it. His magicka seemed to lay elsewhere in the manipulation of the wind around him. A useful talent for getting places and away quickly.

His tail began to wag more quickly at the idea of being taught something new. He might try to deny it or get away from it but he certainly was still a pup. "Yeah!" He barked enthusiastically. "I'd love for you to teach me some stuff! What sorta stuff? I don't think I have great magicka like yours." Not nearly as "showy" anyway. He didn't miss that wink though and quite suddenly he felt his heart pumping wildly in his chest with adrenaline flowing fast. "What sorta of 'moves' did you have in mind?"

RE: Practice makes Perfectionist - Kin-Kin - Sep 05 2016

Kin-Kin shifted her paws, her gaze light and airy, lingering on a target for moments alone before moving onto the next, and only after a while of deeply contemplated thinking did she finally rest her gaze on the pup. What to do first. Start with the basics, or go right for the applaud? They seemed easily impressed, so perhaps the basics would do the trick for now. "Of course!" the she-wolf pretended to be surprised as they confirmed they wanted to see more, grinning and sucking in her breath as she rose to her paws. The initial, unintentional glow from her failed spell was finally draining, leaving her fur 'plain' and gold.

The little one continued on, and with this Kin-Kin had forged a pretty good first impression. She had made a fan! How wonderful, cute, and very... unexpected. Truthfully. Kin-Kin's once-feigned vanity was evolving and inflating into something far more dramatic.

"Heh heh! Well, lucky for you, I've been working on a little something for my next show," she told them. And well, it wasn't a lie? Although she wasn't quite after the ladies this time. She was after something a little less frivolous. "Care to see?"

Even if they didn't respond, Kin-Kin wasn't about to wait.

They were surrounded by glowing crystals; to Kin-Kin, that seemed like the perfect opportunity to show off something a little different. She thought deeply about her next words. "Hmmm... well, your magic might be different to mine, but the principles are the same. If you feel like you can do it, then you can. That's what I'm trying to master." Again, her chest puffed out, and she stood tall.
"With magic, I can do anything...!"

She grinned as she spotted their enthusiasm rising; this was exactly where she wanted them. Although she had to stop to consider for a second. What was she going to teach them? Maybe just something general. You can do anything when you think about it, sorta thing. That's what had happened with the crystals the first time.

"Well," she began, still silently pondering. "I think the best thing to do would be to focus on things just outside of what you already know. And then, you start to think about other things. You form new ideas in your mind. What sorta tricks do you have up your sleeve already? And then we can work on that."

That gave her an idea. Kin-Kin looked around at the glowing crystals.

"See, my magic is all about light." She gently began to reach into the gem on her chest. "But..."

She breathed deeply and softly, closing her eyes as the crystalline light was seemingly sucked out of the world around her. This left Kin-Kin shrouded in shadow, with only the faintest rustle of her cape audible in the dark.

"When there's such a thing as light, you gotta have darkness too. Right?"

RE: Practice makes Perfectionist - Pharoah - Sep 05 2016

Care to see? The little hound nodded his head vigorously though it was obvious he could have done absolutely nothing and still the wolf would have continued onwards. Perfect, absolutely perfect. He'd never extensively practiced the stuff but he was aware of its existence. Perhaps this one would be even more useful at teaching him how to summon it whenever he pleased and how to mold it to his bidding. In any case, she was certainly good at inspiring enthusiasm. He actually felt the emotion bubbling in his chest as he watched her.

Her words, ah, he knew how to make them form for their best results but she... She seemed to have it down as well. He liked that. Beautiful and charismatic. Now the wag in his tail wasn't a forced thing but something that felt more natural. He forgot to speak as he watched her, the way the light of her fur played off of the crystals, the way she walked and moved and spoke. All if created an illusion that went with her element perfectly. Mysterious she was and elusive like the light and the darkness.

Learn from her. Learn from her and gain all that you can... and more. "I don't know. I can do some sound things and make myself go faster. Maybe it's... wind? Or something?" Truthful, honest. There was no time for lies here when he needed her to spill all of her knowledge and help him.

He felt silent again as his green eyes remained on her, watching with rapt attention as the light around her began to fade. She was doused in complete darkness with only her cloak and her sweet voice making sounds. Pharoah dipped into a play bow, voicing rising in quick barks as a sort of doggie form of applause for her act. "Fantastic! Darkness or light you pull it off very well." A true queen of her element... yes.

Should he demonstrate what he could do now? "I would never be able to do anything as amazing as you but my power... well... I'll demonstrate." He rose out of his play bow position and lifted a paw, looking at the gem in place of his dewclaw, focusing on the gem like he'd seen the she-wolf do.

Without further ado he took off, magicka pushing him forward as he ran around the darkened area of the wolfess. His intention, make a couple of laps about the canid then leap onto one of the jutting stones in the ground. He made a dashing run about the she-wolf, showing incredible speed as he did what his breed was known for coupled with the push of Pickup. Finally after a couple of laps about the gal he finished with a leap and landed on a large rock, barely managing to keep from toppling off as his speed worked against him. However, in the end he managed to stay balanced and turn back to look at the cloaked canine. "See? Nothing special." He thought it was something special but he didn't want to threaten the female... Not likely though given her bravado.

RE: Practice makes Perfectionist - Kin-Kin - Sep 07 2016

Kin-Kin thought about what the puppy was saying. She decided to agree with them despite having never seen the 'wind' element before. No doubt she'd end up with a demonstration anyway. It was a gambit she wasn't worried about losing either way. It was a good thing the she-wolf knew what wind was. It was what made Monoceros howl, and what made it a fun place to train. "Hmmmm. Wind sounds like it'd make things a lotta fun," she said curiously, imagining running with the wind at her back, growing faster and faster and faster as time went on... Kin-Kin liked that thought.

Her lips twitched into a wry smile beneath the cover of the shadows she had enveloped herself in. She might have bowed, but in this darkness she doubted they would have seen her anyway. Still, it wasn't long before she shrugged off the shadows with a shake of her body from the tip of her nose to the end of her tail. Like water off a duck's back, she was golden again and ready to receive her applause. Then, and only then, did Kin-Kin bow, stretching out her forelegs with her chin still held high. "Why thank you!" she cooed graciously, wagging her tail. "As you'll have seen in the magicka competition, that isn't even half of what I can do!"

The she-wolf listened patiently as they decided that next, they would demonstrate their own abilities. They didn't seem to have much confidence in themselves though... perhaps she simply had that effect on others, eh? Her ears perked and eyes bright with interest, Kin-Kin agreed, settling back on her haunches in order to watch them better. "Now, now! No need to be so humble," she laughed in response to their words.

No sooner had she done so that they took off- racing around the area they were in before finally leaping atop a small rock like a pedestal. Hah! Nice touch! Kin-Kin wagged her tail encouragingly, a wolfish grin on her face. "Bravo, bravo!" she cheered, stamping each paw against the ground in turn. "Nothing special? Hah, it's not the spell that's special, kid, it's the caster. I'm living proof of that."

She loved to go and toot her own horn and he was happy to let her do it. Yes, let her boast about what she could do. He would continue to "bask" in her glow like a good puppy. Still, her confidence was intriguing and he loved it. If only so he could learn from it and her as well.

After settling on his rock he watched her as she told him to not be so humble. As if in immediate response he puffed out his chest, bright smile forming on his bi-colored face. "Thank-you! Hopefully I can find some more spells and learn what this element is all about." He said with a laugh.

"Or perhaps... I could learn about even more other spells. An accomplished spellmaker like you. Perhaps you could impart knowledge onto a Gemling like me." He leaped from his rock and landed in front of her. His expressive green eyes stared up at her expectantly.

RE: Practice makes Perfectionist - Kin-Kin - Sep 12 2016

Kin-Kin wasn't about to protest the pup basking in her glory. Their smile brought a warm feeling to her egotistical heart and a smirk brightened her face as a result. "I'll bet you will!" she cooed. "After all, not many pups have that kinda mastery of a spell. Not so soon, anyhow." Regardless of whether or not she knew the pup's exact age, Kin-Kin was quite enjoying raising their own esteem through the roof. No doubt such an action would come in handy later on. Also it meant that they'd revel in her greatness al the more. Which was the main point of this all, wasn't it? To an extent at least. Kin-Kin reminded herself of the practicalities.

Ugh... logic is no fun.

Undeniably, the wolf was better focused on making this life worthwhile than working out what would come next. She didn't live in the future or cling to the past; all that existed to Kin-Kin was now. And by the Caves, she would make every moment worthwhile.

"That sounds like a good idea to me," the gilded lady told the pup. "Of another elements, then? " Kin-Kin pretended to consider deeply. Of course, Kin-Kin did have knowledge in that area. Limited knowledge, but knowledge nontheless. She'd summoned a crystal, with great difficulty, and had been trying to hone her skill in that area.

Still, the she-wolf wasn't about to let on that she found it difficult.

"Well, kid! The same principle applies. Just get an idea, know you can do it, and then... do it." Kin-Kin took a deep breath. "I can show you. But I'll need some time." Kin-Kin knew what she could do. She knew that she could do it.

Quietly, Kin-Kin sat back on her haunches, her ears pricked forward and her eyes focused. In her pride, she was determined to impress. Light was nothing compared to this.

C'mon, c'mon. Strength, don't fail me now.

She tried to open the floodgates held within her gem... and as expected, she felt a rush of power flooding over her. Her fur lit up in a bright glow, and yet something was wrong. Exhaustion swept over her in a rush, and she had to fight to stay upright. It was lucky she did, as a sudden pain shot through her belly, causing the wolf to jolt backwards with a snarling yelp. As she did so, a crystal spire grew out from the ground, its pointed tip coated with blood.

Kin-Kin slumped down onto the earth, her eyes round with shock and her fur heating up with embarrassment. Laden with exhaustion more than anything, it was out of sheer luck that the crystal hadn't bit too deep before she'd moved. Still, it was enough that it'd probably scar, and would definitely leave a mark on the puppy.

"L-like I said... I... I'm still w-workin'... on it... Heh... heh..."

Her limbs leaden with barely the strength to hold her upright, Kin-Kin bent down to lick away at the blood.

The canine grinned, glad that he was gaining new knowledge from this more ancient gembound. Every day was a learning experience but today it seemed like he'd hit the jackpot on that knowledgeable fountain. "That would be fantastic!" He said in response to the wolf agreeing to show off some more elemental magic.

His green eyes locked upon her as she prepared to do... something. He had no idea what he would see and was completely caught unaware when he felt that magical pull in the air and saw the spire rising beneath her. If he could have reacted in time he would have warned her, to stay in good graces, but he didn't catch it in time. By the time he thought to say something it was already in her gut and slicing it open.

Was magic so dangerous that it could completely backfire? It seemed that way and he made sure to file the knowledge away for later. To the wolf he said, "Oh no! Are you alright, miss? Can I help in any way?" He stepped forward, eyes on her wound as he tried to offer his help. Wondering what, if anything, he could do.
