[EVENT] A Scream - Lesser Gembounds - Oct 06 2017

With the quartz stars sparkling high above and an eerie chill in the air, there was nothing to suggest to the inhabitants of Orion that anything was out of the ordinary. The stone was cold beneath the paw, glowing crystals glimmered and bathed the world in an ethereal light. Pools of water reflected the fallen city like sheets of glass, still and perfect in the complete and imposing silence.

Suddenly, an unearthly screaming rent the air, echoing throughout the alleyways and deserted streets. There was the furious sound of scrabbling claws and a deep hissing. Occasional squawks and shrill screams followed suit of the awful screech that had at first echoed and it was clear that the terrible noises were made by creatures locked in battle. Though anyone only listening would have assumed some monstrous creature to be the source, it was in fact two large cave rats that had come into conflict; one of them a rusty red colour, and the other a pale brown like walnuts. Tails thrashing like snakes and beating against the ground, their torsos were locked together as each fought for a death-grip on the other.

Although dominance scuffles among red rats were common within their colonies, very rarely was it that greater gembounds would bear witness to a fight to the death. In fact... very rarely was it that red rats fought at all.

From the beginning the winner was already clear; the rusty rat was far smaller at a glance than its walnut brother, and the longer they fought the quicker it tired. But never did it make any move to flee, as any creature facing doom should know to. A final shriek split the air like a butchers knife as the walnut rat's ugly yellow teeth buried themselves deep into the other's throat, drawing thick red blood bubbling to the surface. The dying rat's jaws opened wide, and it opened and closed its gaping mouth even as blood coloured its breaths.

The walnut rat dropped it to the floor and ground its teeth together in fury, every inch of hair standing on end. But it didn't leave, approaching the rat again to sniff its dying foe. Even as the breaths gurgled in its throat, the larger rat began tearing into its foe, removing huge chunks of flesh and swallowing them. It already looked fat, but it ate as though it hadn't fed properly in months, and continued feeding, clawing holes in its quest for the juiciest meat, its eyes crazed and red-ringed before its entire head was buried in meat, breaths emerging in sickening squelches.

It kept on eating, seemingly determined to finish every last bite.

RE: [EVENT] A Scream - Kin-Kin - Oct 18 2017

Kin-Kin was wandering through Orion when she heard the distant screeching of fighting rats. Each raucous sound sent a shudder down her spine and her sensitive ears twitching back. But, although she began to feel herself being carried away from the sounds by anxious paws, at the same time she caught the faintest whiff of blood on her fur. And beneath her dusty hide, her stomach growled hopefully.

Another prick of her ears told her that the fighting was starting to die down, screams fewer and far between.

If one or both of the combatants ended up wounded or even better, dead, Kin-Kin would have an easy meal on her paws, and boy did she need it. The closer she got, the quicker she moved, her tongue lolling out with eagerness and her steps high and quiet.

Finally, as the screams rent the air one last time and then failed completely, Kin-Kin rounded a corner and came face to face with a grotesque sight. Her jaw fell open and she simply stared, rooted to the spot, as the rat devoured its fallen comrade.

RE: [EVENT] A Scream - Zevruu - Oct 18 2017

Having gone to Eridanus briefly, Zevruu now found him back in Orion. This place was his home, and he no longer had any intention to leave it. Anything could happen in other places. He was safe here, in this place he knew like the back of his paw. Nothing could hurt him here.

He was just finishing his thought when a scream pierced through the air. He bristled, eyes narrowed. Screams continued, and he walked toward the sound, a bit hesitatingly. Could something hurt him here? He'd never really encountered anything that could hurt him, in all his cycles of being here. But maybe that was to change today. He heard footsteps and turned to see a familiar golden pelt approach a corner. He followed her, not speaking a word, and looked.

The sight made him freeze. A rat was devouring another, both coated in blood. The rat grabbed chunks of the other, eating it without pause. The sight made him sick to his stomach. Never before had he seen something this grotesque. He glanced toward Kin-kin, seeing that she was rooted to her place, jaw open. He forced his gaze back to the sight, ears lowered and his own jaw slightly open.

RE: [EVENT] A Scream - Amras - Oct 18 2017

Amras

Nearby, exiting the tunnel leading to Monoceros, a blue winged figure emerged standing on two legs and holding a softly glowing quartz orb in one taloned hand. His trip back to his original home had been a productive one, and the four leather pouches he wore around his waist were restocked with bits of quartz and dark crumbling rock he'd eventually identified as black talc.

Absentmindedly the gryphon looked over his orb and began to consider the stagnant nature of its glow. It had been one of the first objects he'd used light element on and was a bit of a symbol of his new lifelong pursuit of different types of magic, but that didn't mean he couldn't decorate it more right? Especially if he used decorations that would wear off eventually.

Amras tossed the orb into his left hand and held three of his fingers together to start one of the simple spells the blacksmith had taught him. Gather magic, keep gathering as it gets twisted into the light element, stub toe on unexpected rock, loses all focus and accidentally manifest the energy into a chaotic swirl of kinetic force, watch orb go flying ten feet away.

More than a little embarrassed the gryphon folded his wings by his sides and dropped to four limbs, chasing down the orb that was rapidly clinking away. Luckily the incomplete spell had not managed to send it too far or two fast and he was able to pin it down before it got lost.

As he placed the orb back in its pouch, however, a screech reached his ears. One of the last times he'd come here someone had been in trouble, was this another instance like that? Without even bothering to fold his wings back and stand upright again Amras began to rush in the direction of the scream, talons gripping the ground as back paws propelled him forward.

What he saw when he arrived was not a hurt gembound though. At least not a greater one. A short distance away he saw a wolf and a cat of some sort, and between him and them the bizarre sight of a rat consuming the corpse of another rat.

"What is it..." he started to mutter, his face sharing a similar confused expression to the other two.

RE: [EVENT] A Scream - Lesser Gembounds - Oct 20 2017

The red rat kept on eating until its already bloated mass had swelled almost to bursting, and only then it immediately swung around to stare at the newcomers with red-tinged eyes, a wild and crazed look about it as it bared yellow fangs. Bunching itself up, it huffed at them, sidling towards one, before its gaze turned to another. and the next. But the creature didn't seem at all fazed that it was outnumbered three to one.

It began to grind its teeth together angrily, eyeing up each of its percieved challengers, before taking a flying leap at the one it perceived as weakest.

The nervous-looking caracal, despite towering over the bloated rat, was its selected target, and the rat shuffled forward before picking up speed, hissing and puffing out. but alas, it was simply too fat to take ay sort of flying leap, and when its movements failed it, the rat paused where it stood and seemed to reconsider. For the slightest moment it seemed to see reason, an ordinary flash in its eye... then it attacked anyway, making an effort to sink its teeth into the caracal's leg.

RE: [EVENT] A Scream - Kin-Kin - Oct 28 2017

Kin-Kin stood transfixed, a sick feeling to her stomach that had chased away the grumble she'd felt in it before. She couldn't watch, but at the same time, she couldn't look away, at the awful sight unfolding before them. Kin-Kin almost backed away, hackles rising beneath her coat, as the rat turned its gaze towards all of them, seeming to size up each creature in turn. Was... Was it just her, or was there something odd about the way it looked at them? a chill ran down her spine.

The wolf almost hadn't noticed that she was no longer alone, so she hastily shook the fear out of her fur and took up her usual proud stance. Before she'd registered what was going on, the rat was waddling forward in an effort to attack the caracal - Zevruu, Kin-Kin recognized- she heard its teeth grinding together in fury.

That couldn't be right! there was only one of it, it was outnumbered three to one, and any one of them could have ripped it to shreds! Kin-Kin had never, even when she toyed with them, been attacked unprovoked by a rat. Usually they had more sense.

A subconscious growl grew in the back of her throat, and she raised her tail behind her.

Almost instinctively, her glow grew to its brightest and she felt a prickle of magic growing in her gem. With a deep breath, she felt it suddenly focus, shining and falling on the rat like a spotlight, casting a bestial shadow on the wall behind it. A flash of light so powerful that it was almost solid radiated from her fur, and within less than a second it was gone.

RE: [EVENT] A Scream - Zevruu - Oct 28 2017

Zevruu was not expecting the rat to turn on him. He'd never met a rat who would dare attack a greater gembound. He couldn't decide if it was brave or stupid. He watched as it crept closer to him, and tried to back away, only for it to sink its teeth in his leg. He let out a yowl, and at that moment, saw a beam of light go by. It was so quick, he wasn't sure if he had imagined it. Being so close to the rat, he got a flash of it as well, and was temporarily blind for just a moment. A quick shake of his head, and it cleared up.

The rat was still on him, however, so he desperately tried to get it off. He shook his leg, and even scratched at it with his other paw, sitting on his hind legs a little. His movements were desperate, and he tried whatever he could to get it off.

Amras

Eyes widened as the oddly behaving rat took note of them and rather than back away from the encircling creatures decided to lash out. Its back wasn't against a wall, it had plenty of room to escape. Why then did it act with so much aggression? What was wrong with this thing?

While these thoughts circled within the gryphon's mind the rat decided to go fully on the offense. With wild abandon the creature hurled itself at the cat's leg, gnawing into flesh with maddened expression. All thoughts left Amras in a flash; this was not the time to consider the situation but it was time to act!

Just as the gryphon began to rush forward with talons raking the ground a great beam of light shone from the wolf, its radiance dwarfing anything Amras had ever seen before. Was this the pinnacle of light magic? How much energy had to have gone into a spell like that? Consider later, for now he had to get the dazed rat away from its victim.

As he got closer Amras began to build magic into a shell on his right talon, as though he were about to activate a smolder step. Instead he simply kept compressing the energy in place, careful not to let in manifest as the ethereal shell strengthened.

Unfortunately, in the shock and confusion at the encounter Amras didn't have quite as much control over the shell as he would have liked. A small portion built up stronger than he was able to manage as talon hit the ground, manifesting into a swirling mass of kinetic energy which in turn broke his concentration on the rest of the shell, resulting in what looked like a gust of wind exploding out from under him as dust went flying.

Unable to keep footing Amras tripped and began to fall toward the two, trying his best to correct his path as he tumbled forward. He might have been unusually light for his size, but he was still almost four times larger than the cat ahead!

RE: [EVENT] A Scream - Lesser Gembounds - Dec 19 2017

The rat had managed to sink large, yellowed fangs into the Serval's leg, and it hung on for dear life, seemingly unconcerned by their wild and frantic motions to get it off. The serval's claws drew blood, but it seemed unfazed by the pain. In addition, a strange, fine powder came loose from the cat's paw as they made contact, rising from their fur in a fine mist that was soon lost to the stony air. How odd...

The rat was dazed by a sudden, bright light, and the creature let go, dropping to the ground in a flurry of teeth and strange powder. The rat shrieked and hissed for a while, puffing out fur, grinding teeth and finally clawing at its eyes until the blood flowed freely. Luckily, it seemed like the rat had lost interest in the serval as it thrashed and writhed wildly.

And then, seemingly coming to its senses again, the now-permanently blind rat ran, leaving smudges of that strange powder against rocks and bricks. Its shrieks could be heard for some time among the rubble until with a final, piercing shriek, its cries faded into distant echoes.

Where had it gone?

But more importantly, where had it come from?

The rat is now dead, but your characters may now post their rolls in order to determine what happens next! How will the Gembounds put a stop to the rats' strange behavior?

RE: [EVENT] A Scream - Kin-Kin - Dec 19 2017

Kin-Kin was relieved as the rat took off into the darkness, but there was definitely something strange going on here; something that caused the hairs along her spine to stand on end, although they were mostly hidden by the cloak she wore.

The wolf looked nervously towards the other beings who were in the nearby vicinity, sniffing around the area where the rat had been thrashing and clawing at its eyes. After a few moments, Kin-Kin crept over to the carcass of the dead rat, as though afraid it might soon return to life. What little remained of its tufty, messy fur still held traces of that strange, fine powder.

The stony ground was stained with blood and that was almost the only thing that she could scent, but there was also the faintest trace of a bitter scent on the air. She shuddered slightly, raising her nose as she wandered around the near vicinity, seeing if she could pick up a trail of some kind.

But the scent of blood simply drowned out everything else.

The wolf shuddered.
