Of Entropy and Creation - Mortis - Jan 08 2018

Hidden way from the world, twin chrysalises lay side by side underneath the moss, undisturbed for many cycles. Two crystalline pools, The Eyes, watched them grow, like an ever vigilant guardian. One had begun to crack, as its inhabitant had grown too big to be contained with in its milky quartz walls. The chrysalis began to crumble.

And that was when Entropy drew its first breath.

A stringy, little foal with a coat of dark bay lay on its bed of quartz, its legs still tucked under it as if it was still being cradled within its chrysalis. It did not move, as still as a corpse, but its gentle rise and fall of its sides suggested that it was alive. Slowly, the foal open its eyes. The vibrance of Eridanus reflected in the orb of milky quartz tucked within its eye socket.

Equus Mortis was what it knew itself as, and its purpose was innate. How fitting it was to hatch within this cavern. Its sister's work was everywhere, but so was its. Calling upon its vessel's magick, Mortis drew its hoof out and placed it on the bed of leaves. Spongy white fungi sprawled from it and began to blanket the surroundings. It fed from the decay and crept up the trees and ferns, its mycelium encroached deep within them like thin, strangling, gray fingers. They began to rot.

The other milky quartz chrysalis cracked at the same time as the other one did. Celestia, who was bigger than her sibling already hatched from her chrysalises, being too big for her home now. Celestia opened her eyes slowly and drew her first breath. At first, she didn't move just like her sibling. Instead she studied the area she was in. It was comforting to know she was surrounded by so much life. Celestia was a healthy foal with a pure white coat. Her milky quartz gem horn was clearly visible.

Her head turned slowly as her sibling covered a bed of leaves in fungi. Her eyes closed once again and her blue orbs looked down. Slowly she pushed herself onto her feet. As she stood small tiny plants sprouted up around her back, but only a few. Her magic wasn't as good as her sibling's but it did not matter. All life was precious. No matter how big or how small. Celestia stood tall now, looking around once more before turning to her sibling, Mortis. She stared at him silently, not saying a word just yet. Slowly, step by step she made her way over to the foal. She bent her head down and tried to get her sibling to stand by attempting to push her head under it and then pushing up clearly forgetting or not used to her gem horn yet. "Come, let us admire life at it's finest,
Mortis."
Whether her attempt or not worked, she would look forward, her bright blue eyes wide with admiration.

notes: I forgot about Celestia's horn for a second, so I was writing, and didn't realise Celestia was STABBING her twin.

The vessel registered something sharp poke its skin, but fortunately it did not puncture. It did grab her sibling's attention however. Mortis turned its head towards her, seeing its beautiful counterpart for the first time through the eye of a Gembound.

"Sister." Its young voice rasped like crunching leaves.

The foal watched its sibling use its legs effortlessly it seemed and wondered how she managed so fast. It attempted to mimic her, but its body's legs proved to be an enigma. Mortis tried to rise to its hooves, but its strange appendages became tangled and it soon toppled over onto its bed of fungi.

"What is this that hinders me?" It hissed to Celestia. "Why do they not keep you?"

Winter stepped back and stared at her sibling who still hadn't stood. She leaned in closer, seeing the gem eye. Her sibling was partially blind. She stared at him before turning to the plant life. She stepped forward a little before speaking once more. "Mortis, please stand. Come view the world with me. Let us experience it together." She smiled and slowly lowered her head and closed her eyes.

She activated Green Sense and she was able to sense all the plant life, there was so much but the spell was ephemeral. She quickly opened her eyes and blinked a few times, even stumbling and almost falling over. Even though she was successful, activating the magic here was just overwhelming and it quickly gave her a headache. Celestia shook her head softly, she would have to get used to that power slowly over time. She looked over to Mortis once again, giving him a gentle, kind smile.

It caught its sibling's warm, encouraging smile and Mortis knew this was a challenge it must overcome.

After a moment of silence, it replied."As you wish."

It tried to rise to its hooves again. This time, it would not be so easily deceived by its vessel. On wobbly legs, the dark foal stood, seeing the world from a different perspective. Carefully, it took its first steps forward. Its knobby knees shook like they would give out, but Mortis maintained its balance.

This locomotion... how queer.. It thought to itself.

It turned head to Celestia and watched her try to reconnect with her many gifts. As a being of death and decay, it could never understand its sibling's fascination with life, but just this once, it would indulge her.

"Lead the way, Sister mine."

"Listen to me."
