Family Reunion - Livius - Jan 16 2018
Envy was clinging to Aaliyah's back, telling wild tales of the exploits and wild magical endeavors that they had achieved since they'd last seen their adopted mother. "I collected red stones for a giant bird, and now I can make wings!" was one story they told, draping their stubby forelegs over Li's forehead whilst their long body draped over her neck like a scarf. "Watch this!"
Envy dropped their head and focused, straining to unlock the power that they'd been given for the first time. it had been so long since they'd obtained these wings, and yet they'd never gotten the chance to show them off yet. they'd not seen the wings themselves, but they hoped they'd be able to fly with them one day!
Envy felt a tingling feeling beginning in their gem and a powerful surge of magic coursing through the rest of their being, their body curling and twitching in excitement as their magic formed itself into ethereal red wings unfurling out from their sides, each wing several times the length of their body as though meant to be worn by a much larger creature. Envy turned to examine them, and, pleased, fluttered the ethereal appendages around. "Mamma! Look!"
Envy then continued their train of stories. "I've gotten way, waaay better at magic, too! I told you that I can eat and drink, but I can also change colours! properly this time! I turned into a snake friend I met!" Envy grinned. "And then I can see in the dark, and I met a huge smelly horse who said that I can be great one day, so that's what I'm going to do."

As Li walked around, she listened to the stories Envy was telling her. One seemed rather interesting. Wings? She craned her head best she could to see Envy. Upon seeing the ethereal wings, she let out a gasp. "That's very cool!" She let out a purr. She continued to listen, humming slightly.
"I'm very proud of you for...practicing your magic like that. And I'm sure you'll be great." She chuckled as she continued to wander around mostly aimlessly.

Imperia wandered into Orion without really meaning to. They had a few recent and fresh burns, but they ignored it. They would deal with it later, if ever. Right now...something felt as though it had led them to Orion. They hadn't been here since they last saw Kin-kin. Looking around, it was dark, but they could still see faintly.
They continued walking when a vaguely familiar sight caught their attention. A...too familiar sigh. Much too familiar. When ethereal wings showed up near them, they could see the outline. And yes. It was exactly who they thought it was. Eyes narrowing, they debated going over. It had been many, many cycles since they last saw them. A flick of an ear, and a decision was made.
They stalked closer, trying to sneak up on them. They went behind her so she couldn't see them approach. A slow, careful approach, and then...
"Aaliyah."

Envy seemed pleased by the response their Mamma gave. They grinned, shifting so that they could admire their newly discovered wings until the magic faded, red wings drifting away into mist. They opened their mouth again to speak, but stopped as a tendril of strange scent reached them. Envy closed their jaws and sniffed at the air, small nose twitching- unmistakably, the smell was that of burned fur, and curiosity caused them to raise their head away from Aaliyah's hide, lilac eyes narrowed as they squinted into the dark.
They turned their head as far as they could, scanning each way for any trace of movement, and thought that at one point they might have seen a shadow flickering, but they couldn't be sure. Envy focused, trying to bring out their magic for the second time, sifting through the foggy tendrils residing in the gem on their tongue.
With a prickling feeling and another rush of magic, Envy watched the world around them lighten into clarity, and they twisted around, lilac eyes flashing in the dark as their piercing gaze picked out every little detail. Quickly they bristled, small claws clinging to Li. "Mamma!" they squeaked shrilly, standing upright on Aaliyah's back and warily watching the stranger come closer.
The stranger spoke; Envy didn't recognize the voice, but they didn't like the way they spoke to their mother. They hissed, baring small white fangs, lilac eyes glowing in the dark, coiling into disconcerted shapes as they tried to work out whether the other cat was friend or foe. The stranger was huge, but Envy didn't seem to care.
"Who are you?" they hissed.

Li had continued walking when something made them freeze. A sickeningly familiar scent. No...they couldn't be...were they? Now? So many cycles had passed...Were they still angry? She could feel Envy's claws prick her slightly as they clung to her, letting out a little squeak. Her fur had started to bristle, and she looked around wildly, desperate for it to not be true and please don't be here and-
She heard it. For the first time since she left. Her full name, said once more in that harsh voice. Faintly, she could hear Envy hissing to them, but all she could focus on was the fact that Imperia was and and right behind her. Slowly, limbs suddenly heavy, she turned around and was face to face with her creator.
She wanted to run, to flee, but she had to stay. She had to be strong, even just for Envy. So she raised her head, and said a single word in response.
"Imperia."

Imperia didn't notice the little creature that rested on Aaliyah's back until it called out. Mamma? Did Aaliyah...They looked over the creature. It didn't exactly look like her. Did she just find it and decided to take care of it? They watched as Aaliyah turned around slowly to face them. They became distracted when the creature spoke. They focused their attention on it.
Who are they? The words brought a grin to their face, and they chuckled darkly. "I am Imperia." Their gaze flicked to Aaliyah's face and their grin seemed to only grow. "Your precious "Mamma's" parent."
Their gaze once more to Aaliyah, they suddenly found themselves at a loss for words. How should they act? Angry? Calm? Maybe calm, and then angry? They had said, when they separated, that if they saw her again, they wouldn't treat her lightly. Did Aaliyah still remember that? Judging by her action, maybe. They continued to debate what to say before finally settling on something.

Envy felt Aaliyah's motions grow stiff and tense, and her aparrent nervousness rubbed off on Envy as a prickle of rage running down their spine. their fur puffed up, lip lifting to show sharp little teeth, and they continued to coil, tail thrashing. The stranger introduced themselves just after their mother had muttered a stiff greeting.
"Well, I'm Envy," they said shortly, eyes narrowed to reflective slits. But their introduction also caused their head to tilt slowly in fascination. "You're Mamma's mamma?" Envy asked slowly, their fur and stance seeming to relax slightly. That couldn't be a bad thing, right...? But still, Aaliyah's reaction to their presence left a cold apprehension in their heart.
"Well, even if you are Mamma's mamma, if you think about doing anything bad to us, you'd better back off." They coiled up tightly again and hissed, trying to look big and threatening despite their tiny size. "Or else!"
That'd do it; Envy felt rather pleased with that display and felt sure that Imperia would be intimidated. If not, they had their magic at the ready. This 'Imperia' would never expect them to be so skilled!

Li's fur only continued to bristle as Imperia continued to speak, introducing themselves to Envy. A part of her wanted Envy to stay safe and maybe underneath her or around her legs, but she made no attempt to move them. Her tail was moving slowly, and she found herself growing annoyed. Why was Imperia here? Why now? Why couldn't they just stay away?
When they spoke to her, she snorted. "Seriously? You don't see more for - how long? Many, many cycles. And the first thing you say is ''it's been a while.' Yeah, no shit it's been a while. You've noticed! Frankly, I was hoping you'd stay away longer. I'm having a grand old time without you. Even taking care of someone! Far better than you ever took care of me." The words were practically spat at Imperia, and her tail was now lashing. She wasn't even paying any attention to what Envy was saying, far too focused on Imperia and words she had longed to say for cycles, wondering if she'd ever come across them.

Envy. An interesting name, though perhaps it was fitting for one so small. Imperia flicked their tiny tail as it - Envy - continued to speak. As they tried to look threatening, they chuckled, their grin growing even further. "Cute." It was clear they were not intimidated in the slightest by the tiny creature.
Upon hearing Aaliyah began to speak, they blinked, not expecting the outburst that came from the hybrid. Their grin immediately dropped, and they now frowned. Their eyes narrowed again. "I don't like your tone of voice," they growled, claws digging slightly into the ground below. "If you had as terrible of an upbringing as you say you do, what makes you think you can take care of someone?" They raised their head, a challenge in their eyes. "What if you fail just as you say I did?"

Envy clung tightly to Aaliyah's back as they felt her fur bristling, and continued to bare their teeth at Imperia, clearly annoyed by their lack of reaction. "Cute!?" they demanded, bristling themselves. "I'll show you who's cute!"
With that, Envy scurried down Aaliyah's foreleg like a bullet, anger sparking nausea, their breath tasting bitter. They placed themselves between Imperia and Aaliyah, raising their forepaws and standing as tall as they could muster, an impressive 4 inches.
They were vaguely aware of Aaliyah speaking, angrily, and got the impression that Imperia was not someone they'd get along with. The little one hissed, baring glistening fangs tinted red with cinnabar. When Imperia opened their mouth, the young one felt themselves growing more angry by default, regardless of whether the words were directed at them. "You leave my Mamma alone!" they yelled.
They found that their stomach was bubbling with the threat of vomiting, and they swayed slightly where they stood, gaunt frame looking emaciated and sick. Their tail was thrashing and their rounded ears were back, tension and adrenaline making them want to jump and run; but they forced themselves to remain still, glaring evenly at this... impostor-mamma.
In their efforts to look threatening, Envy felt the thrill of magic surging through their fur, and once again those ethereal red wings unfurled from their back. They splayed those wings as far and high as they could in an effort to look big, strong, and most of all, terrifying.
