Lying low - Livius - Feb 15 2018

It was a long walk back from Cetus, and Envy found themselves growing hungry, their emaciated belly letting out a plaintive growl. Although the weasel had long since gotten used to the hunger pangs, they were still no less annoying. As they scurried among the glowing mosses and mushrooms, they began to recognize this place as the one they’d seen beyond the foul black wolf who seemed to have made it their life’s mission to aggravate them further.

Of course, Envy wouldn’t allow that. They’d somehow found their way around her anyway, and they didn’t think that, even if she tried, she’d ever be able to catch them. Envy paused, taking the chance to clean their paws of cetus’ mud whilst they admired the lights.

With their paws clean and pink again, they turned their attention to their growling stomach, focusing in on their magic. Within moments, the glow of the mosses around them subsided as they sucked nourishment from the soil they fed on. The piercing feeling in their empty stomach gradually subsided. Satisfied, Envy dropped down onto all four paws and yawned widely.

It's a new world
It's a new start
And it's alive with the beating of a young heart

Azar sighed, his own voice echoing back to him. He blinked, his whiskers twitching as he ventured further, feeling the unwelcome pang of loneliness. Days, perhaps even months, had passed since he had last felt the warm feeling of friendship. Azar yawned, stretching his jaws and widening his eyes. His pace quickened, as he sniffed the air. Was that another gembound he could smell? Whatever it was, it was a comforting smell and Azar followed it without a trace of reluctance. As the fox bounded along, paws skimming the floor, he realised that even if this was a gembound it may still be unfriendly. He hesitated, just for a moment or so, before setting off again.

Azar began to wonder if he could actually smell anything, or if his nose was just playing tricks on him. Maybe he was so desperate that he was following his own hope, he really didn’t know. He grinned, it was fun anyway. The optimistic young fox scurried after the scent, many thoughts swimming around his head. In just a few minutes, he could be face to face with a new friend! It was a definite possibility.

The peace lasted precisely one second before the silence was broken by the sound of approaching pawsteps. Envy's gaze flickered, and they hesitantly rose up onto their paws, scampering onto the nearest rock in order to make sure they didn't go unnoticed and stepped on... and maybe just to feel that little bit taller. It wasn't long before their impatience was rewarded by the sight of a fox padding by. The fur along their back bristled as Envy puffed themselves up, trying to look big and strong.

"Hey!" they declared their presence shrilly, waving a paw to make sure they wouldn't be missed. They raised their chin and looked sideways at the fox, feigning disinterest. Their thin, bony form looked precisely the opposite of threatening, but Envy didn't seem to care. They frowned, gaze flickering over the fox judgingly. But then they let out a huff and pretended not to care again.

Azar heard this voice, and his heart skipped a beat. His eyes lit up and he turned around, excited.
"I knew I could smell someone! Hello!" Azar greeted, approaching the other gembound with a wagging tail. His tongue lolled. "My name is Azar, and it’s a pleasure to meet you! I’ve never seen a gembound like you before. Can I ask your name?" Azar was so happy - his nose hadn’t been fooling him after all! He grinned excitedly at the weasel, hoping they could be great friends. They were certainly an interesting gembound, and Azar flicked his tail, although doing so was difficult as it was wagging uncontrollably. He hoped this stranger understood Azar just wanted to be its friend.

Envy's eyes widened for a moment and they seemed taken aback at this... 'Azar' and his enthusiasm, and the weasel at first seemed unsure on how to respond. After a while, though, they cleared their throat, raised themselves their whole 6 inches in height and sniffed disdainfully, pretending not to care. "Good for you," they congratulated snidely. After a moment of thought, they returned the other's grin with a itter one, that didn't extend to their eyes.

How could this fox be so happy?!

Envy felt frustration in their chest. Part of them longed to take some of that elation using magic, but they also remembered how, every time without fail, their own feelings had come crashing back, leaving them feeling nauseous and sad. They'd come to rely on the feelings of others to give them what they could never have, but it was a dangerous addiction, and Envy felt themselves inching closer and closer towards giving in to it as they looked at the happy fox. They decided ahead of time that they didn't like him.

"It's Envy," they said finally, turning away from Azar with frustration showing through their bitter grin. They folded their paws across their chest. They didn't want to see Azar so happy, but somehow looking away only made it worse.

"Envy, huh? That’s a great name! Let’s be friends, okay Envy?" Azar’s tail wagged even more furiously. "You seem like a really great gembound, I can’t wait to talk to you more!" Azar was so glad he had managed to meet this gembound, they seemed pretty nice and Azar knew they’d be good friends. He licked his whiskers for no apparent reason, awaiting the weasel’s reply with some kind of eagerness. Envy was an unusual name, but it had a nice ring to it and Azar did think it suited this gembound quite well. He didn’t really know what the word itself meant, of course, or he might have thought differently.

Envy's eyes narrowed, gaze flickering towards them. At their joyous response, Envy couldn't help but wince visibly. Was this fox deaf!? but, as the moments passed, a thoughtful look crossed the weasel's face. Slowly, the bitter grin was replaced by a sly smile as Envy got an idea.. their gaze snapped to attention and they smoothed the bristling fur along their back. if they were gonna have to put up with this fox (it didn't cross Envy's mind that they could just leave) they might as well squeeze a bit of fun out of this painful encounter, right?

"Oh yes! let's be friends!" Envy chided, dropping to all fours and sidling closer, their body curled tightly in on itself as their tail thrashed wildly. "...And we can go eat together, and sleep together, and live together, and... I know! let's chase pretty little butterflies through fields of flowers under a rainbow! Is that right?!" Their voice gradually rose until their indignance leaked through. "And you can tell me how everything tastes, and tell me how true friends feel! Because that's definitely how it works."

Envy softly grumbled to themselves, their voice low and indecipherable. Finally they rose back onto their hindpaws and looked down their nose at Azar, seemingly baffled by the sheer stupidity of it all. "Idiot," they said bluntly, right to the poor fox's face.

Azar was slightly confused. A few moments later, he recovered, and smiled at the weasel. "I guess I can be a bit of an idiot, huh?" He laughed. "So, you will be my friend? That’s great! I think we’ll have loads of fun together! About your little comment, I guess I don’t really understand. I suppose friendship is where you just feel safe around another gembound, you don’t have to do everything together..." Azar dipped his head thoughtfully. "Anyway, Envy, you seem pretty smart yourself - how many cycles old are you? I’m three, so I guess I’m still pretty young."

Envy’s cruelness seemed to have no effect whatsoever on Azar, his tail was wagging just as much as it always had and his eyes were bright and eager. He was an optimist, and didn’t let Envy’s comments get to him. Azar wanted to give the weasel a chance, and he really did believe they could be friends.

Envy stared at them with a piercing gaze, as though trying to shear all the spirit they could from Azar with that one scathing look. But equally, it was as though the weasel was trying their utmost hardest to understand what exactly they were doing wrong. Perhaps a different approach would be necessary? Envy felt sure that Azar would sucker up to Envy's magical prowess, but they didn't think he would cower.

"Absolutely," Envy agreed with a snort, then hesitated on replying to their next words. Finally, they rolled their eyes. It seemed like the fox had missed their point entirely. Did that make them friends now? Had Envy just been forcibly inserted into a friendship circle? Envy didn't know if that was possible, and not if they had something to say about it. Which they did. A lot to say. Envy's fur bristled, their tail twitching wildly. "Well, I don't think I could be scared of you if I tried," Envy said finally, though they didn't mean it as a compliment. "So that's... something... I guess."

Envy bared their teeth as they tried to think of a scathing remark, but they couldn't help feeling a little less angry as he called them smart. "Hmph. Well, I suppose that's true..." they admitted. "Smarter than you, anyway. And, I'm three, too. I think."

Envy relaxed slightly, though they still bristled. This fox, at the same age as them, was so much bigger, and furthermore, they were happy. No, Envy couldn't be friends with them. Or anyone, for that matter.

Friendship would make them weak. it didn't matter how they looked at it.

Azar eyed Envy. They were only three, too? "That’s awesome, we’re the same age!" Azar blinked. "You look troubled, Envy, is something wrong?" Azar lowered his gaze apologetically. "I’m sorry if I’m acting uncomfortably, I guess I’m just pretty excitable! I bet you’re not used to friends, huh? Don’t worry, I’m sure I can help you out. And I know I’m not a very scary gembound, but I’d rather not be. If I was scary, it would drive other gembounds away from me. I just want everybody around me to be happy." Azar lifted his head once again, his ears pricked up. He was smiling again, eying Envy hopefully.

Azar sat himself down, wrapping his tail around his paws as he awaited Envy’s response. The fox let out a satisfied yap, it had been ages since he had spoken to anybody. Envy definitely made him feel happier. "Thank you, Envy. You’ve cheered me up!"
