Sleep among lights - Alan - Mar 12 2018

Warm, peace, but there was still light shining, even under his eyes that were shut. The gentle blue that lulled him through the long night, the love that burned bright in his heart. For those that he knew and for those that he didn't, his love and comfort pushed him through the darkness.

But it did not need push him, as he floated gently through the black and blue. He didn't want to wake, but something was pulling him out. He could not stay here forever, in the dark and light, in the unconscious and the peaceful forever. So the darkness receded and he was flung into the light.

The thin crystal that had wrapped around his body shattered easily and he tumbled to the ground. He gulped in a large breath as his eyes blinked open. How long had it been? It couldn't have been very long, right? It didn't feel long. He glanced at the crystal and saw how thin it was. It had been so easy to break out of, much unlike the crystal at his birth.

Alan slowly got to his feet, shaking slightly as his muscles adjusted back to functioning. He thought that he had just fallen asleep, but apparently he had slept for a little too long.

He opened his beak in a large yawn and shook out his feathers, opening his wings wide and tossing around his thick, feathery tail. He had grown much in his sleep and he wondered if an entire cycle had gone by already.

He wondered if his magic still worked. He had to try. He turned towards his wings and ruffled them, working the magic from his cheek into the tips of the feathers. They began to glow a soft blue and Alan sighed, happy that he had not forgotten how to make lights.

Suddenly, Alan realized something. The light, the light in his feathers was dimmer. Or, at least, he could see his feathers much clearer. He blinked, confused and surprised, and he realized he could no longer hear the storm. Was it possible that it was gone? No, the storm was huge. There was no way that it was gone!

He rushed out of his cave and gasped with amazement before shielding his eyes a moment later. The lights were on and they were blinding. Never in his life had the world been so bright. With his head under his wing, he blinked in the shadows for a moment before carefully pulling his wing away. It was true, the storm was gone. The ceiling of the cave was clear and dark now, no more storming, flashing clouds to muddle the colors and the stones above. Alan couldn't stop looking, couldn't stop taking in all the light. It was everything he had ever dreamed.

However, a pit dropped in his stomach. While joy burst in his heart, he suddenly felt the weight of uselessness fall on his shoulders. Now that the lights were on and the dark was gone, did he have a use to the caves? He had been so intent on turning the lights back on and providing baubles and glows for the denizens that he had never really been concerned about what would happen should that not be needed anymore.

He reached out a talon and pulled close a pebble from nearby. He pressed a bit of magic into the rock and it began to glow feebly in a pale blue color. But he could barely see the light in such a bright room. Was this what it was coming to? Making tiny, useless baubles? Sleeping in his cave for so long he went back into the chrysalis?

No, that couldn't be it. Alan turned around, back to his cave, to think and to decide what he was going to do next.

RE: Sleep among lights - Alan - Mar 15 2018

Perhaps he should leave! Leave Polaris! The words themselves were terrifying to him. He had never left his birth cave before. He had set his home here, his entire life had been spent in this one cave. To leave it and explore the others, the ones Kera had talked about, was both exciting and nerve wracking. Should he do it? Should he dare?

As he looked up where the storm had once been, he made his decision. It was scary and a new concept, but he had to be brave. He had spent his time in this cave. It was different now, empty without the flashing lights and the darkness he had grown used to. It was time to step out of this place and discover more. Learn more. Meet more gembounds.

So taking a deep breath, he stepped back into his cave and bent his head, softly touching one of the crystals that decorated his cave. It lit up bright blue and he smiled contently. This would always be his home, but it was time to go now.

He turned and stepped out of his cave and set off without hesitation towards the tunnel he knew would lead him out. Feathers ruffling with excitement, he left Polaris with his head and spirits high.
