The Hatching of a Flower - Aster - May 03 2015

It had been the most peaceful of eternities.

It was almost like an egg. The quiet hum, the gentle pulse, the light just barely filtering past the fragile shell, all just as it should be. The soul never stirred, never sighed, always content and comfortable, safe inside the polished agate walls. But the little bird’s feathers were growing close to the walls, close and not so comfortable. Beyond, the forest murmured.

A very long moment passed, so long it may have been many strung together. It was impossible to tell.

The walls which had shielded the little bird were close, close and cool and smooth. Time crawled on and the bird was soon pressed up against the agate from every side.

The nestling, for the first time, was uncomfortable, started shifting. Cracking the stone. A little beak pushed forward, the same as the stone but thicker and stronger, and shattered it.

The bird stuck a ruffled head out of the hole and let out a little peep. They blinked their silver eyes and scratched themself out of the stone chrysalis to sit on the ground, curious. They were a jackdaw, they knew that! Whatever that was, that was them. And they also had a name…a name they couldn’t yet say or think of as a word. All they could do right now was peep. But they could get up and look, with an unsteady flapping as they stood and started to hop.

The place was green and nice, very nice. It was dark, but this didn't seem odd at all to the young gembound, especially since the fungi provided plenty of light to navigate by. The little dew-covered blossoms seemed especially beautiful to the little nestling. They hopped along awkwardly, looking at everything with their bright silver eyes. Something white flashed in the corner of their vision and made them stop…could it be? They looked back, coming closer, and saw a plant with little bluish-white flowers of many petals, filled in the center with spot of yellow. Yes, their name! The little bird chirruped happily and carefully used the sharp bit of their beak to clip off the highest couple blossoms with some stem. They then gently picked it up in their beak and continued on the edge of the path. The chrysalis had protected them for a while, but now they weren't quite a fledgeling and there certainly wasn't a nest or a mother for them. Which meant, they'd just have to find someone else for a little bit.

Darkness encased the essence that formed in the amethyst chrysalis. There was nothing but an empty silence that kept the neonate content. That was until a light hum vibrated the chrysalis as it increased in volume while it gave off a purple light every few seconds. The being trapped in the casing of the stone was tightly compressed. Small, jagged lines appeared on the chrysalis as it became too much to contain the neonate. Just a few moments later, more cracks were made before it shattered all together.

An audible gasp came from opened jaws to take in a lungful of air. The newly hatched cub wobbled on spotted limbs as she tried to get her bearings. The feline blinked many times but she saw no change in her foggy vision. A loud mewl left her lips as she took a step forward only to collapse onto the moss covered ground. The child could only make out blurred outlines of what was around her. With a sniffle, her tail unconsciously swung behind her as she moved her body in a random direction. A small groan escaped her throat every time she would bump into something that was in her path. Rounded ears flattened to her skull as she halted in her crawling along the ground to sprawl her limbs outward. Her head lowered so her chin was touching the mossy floor. The cub released a whine as she had unknowingly been following the path of the bird whom had just escaped their chrysalis as well.

The jackdaw fluttered and whirled around in surprise at the whine from behind them. It was a very large, fluffy, spotty cub. At least, it certainly seemed large to the baby bird. It was all sprawled out, which struck the jackdaw as rather curious. They hopped up to the cub, bringing their name along in their beak. They dropped the flower before the other gembound.

peep?

The agate-beaked gembound hopped around the larger one, twittering curiously. Why are you all laying down-like? Do you have a name? I have a pretty name! They didn’t know how to express any of these ideas, but they hoped their good intentions would come across.

Oh, that’s strange - the bird leaned in to examine the spotted cub's eyes. They were like the pretty gem in the cub's forehead, but paler, and they weren’t quite right…they weren’t sharp. Oh no, could they not see? But then, how could the jackdaw show their name? They peeped sadly, their name was the nicest thing ever!

Movement from a small shadow in front of her had the feline raise her head. A twitch of her nose and the shadow came closer. Her lavender eyes drifted downward to the thing it dropped, and she inched her right forepaw to hopefully touch the object. An ear flickered upwards from her skull absently when the bird peeped at her. The rosetted cub blinked once and the small shadow that was before her disappeared. Her head tilted as she looked upward and off to both sides to see if she could get a glance at it again. Where did it go? Her tail swished high above her stationary body. Flared nostrils sucked in the bird’s scent while she took in a breath. Her tongue slipped out of her jaws to lick around the edges of her lips. Focusing back to what was in front of her, the juvenile could make out the shadow that was rather close to her face. A forced exhale came from her nostrils as she extended her neck forward slightly to try and touch her nose to the shadow. Another peep echoed in her ears and she gave a gurgle in response. She blinked a few more times as she stared at the bird as if that would help her see any better.

It didn’t seem like the cub was understanding them at all. If anything, it was just becoming more frustrating. The jackdaw had an idea of language, but without a fully developed voice could do nothing with it. They could gesture, but the spotted gembound couldn’t clearly see, so that was unlikely to help much. Instead, they noticed that the cub was trying to touch them but missing, not having a good sense of how far apart they were. Something could be done about that.

The bird slowly came close and settled just in front of the cub’s nose, so that the feathers of their chest just brushed against it. They tensed nervously, ready to flap and hop away if…well, they weren’t sure what could happen but they certainly had the idea that they should be worried. The jackdaw tucked their head down and gave another tentative chirp.

She shifted her footing from the ground so she was in a crouching manner. Her head still angled downwards at the bird that occupied her attention. The spotted feline’s wet nose tingled as small strands of fur tickled her nostrils. The sensation caused the cub to move her body upwards in a sitting position. Her eyes involuntarily closed as her head shook to one side as a forced portion of air left from her nose and mouth. Her pale, purple eyes opened one at a time while she lifted a paw to wipe across her lips before she placed it back on the ground. Moving her head back down to be level with the bird, her head tilted to the left as she squinted her eyes. She tried to see if she could make out the shadow’s shape as her jaws parted to try and form a word. “W-what… ” Are you? What am I? Her voice was raspy as her tongue curled in her mouth when she formed the beginning of a question. The leopard swung her tail about with little thought behind the action as she turned her attention from the small being in front of her to finally take in her distorted surroundings.

Oh, a word! The little gembound could definitely recognize the language, even if it wasn’t very much. And they knew what they were! The ordeal was saying it. “I’m a, a, a chaknaw.” It came out funny in their little baby twitters, but it was close enough. They looked down at the clipped blossom, unsure how to communicate what it meant. “My name…” They knew that a flower wasn’t a proper name, but it was definitely their name!

The jackdaw let their attention turn outward as well, to a clump of glowing crystal and mushrooms. They hopped over, flapping their wings fruitlessly, and put their silver eye down to examine the angular stone. Where does the light come from? They tilted their head and prodded it, scraping with tiny dark talons. The crystal didn’t yield or react, so the bird instead turned to the pink-tinted fungus and pecked at it. Oh! It was unexpectedly soft, and the sharp beak went right through it. The little gembound squawked and pulled back, giving the juice left on their beak a look of irritation.

Nostrils flared to inhale the earthy smell as she took in the tall shadows. Her head tilted all the way back to see how far the shadows went. Jaw loosened from its upper counterpart to stare unblinkingly at the space in front of her. The small bird captured her attention when her rounded ears twitched from its voice. A brow furrowed in confusion that replaced the stoic expression on her features. “You a chak-naw?” The cub repeated their words as she slipped her tongue out between her teeth to touch her nose.bHer long tail swung out behind her absently as her head turned to one side when the bird spoke again. Smacking her lips together she stretched out her back legs. “Name..” The feline gembound parroted their lyrics once again. Something seemed to click in her mind when she mimicked the bird. A word seemed to whisper in her ear but she could not decipher it. Brushing the feeling off for now, the cub watched as the small shadow of the ‘chaknaw’ moved away from her. The female rolled her weight forward so she was standing on her limbs and turned her body to follow the bird’s hopping shadow. Her pace was leisured as she moved to slightly hover her head over the being that was her company. Her ears unconsciously twitched from the sound of something scratching against something that was hard. The bird’s squawk of alarm had the juvenile angle her head down so she could see its shadow better. “What that?” She breathed in the scent and hummed softly from the strange smell.
