The Very Hungry Cat - Aspen - Aug 21 2018

Upon opening his eyes to a pile of orange shards and a sparkly cave, Aspen's first thought was that he was hungry. His second was that there was prey below him; he could smell it.

So he jumped.

His landing was awkward and clumsy, but hey, at least he landed near the rabbit! So he jumped again, barely snagging its fur in his claws before it got away, and killed it with a bite to the neck. Aspen did feel pretty bad for it, but he was hungry and only prey could solve that. He ate the rabbit quickly, licking the last traces from his lips, and stretched. It was quite nice to be out of the chrysalis, he thought, looking around. Plenty of rocks to jump on and places to explore.

RE: The Very Hungry Cat - Rast - Aug 23 2018

Air rushed into the lungs of a small snow leopard. As soon as it filled her lungs, it came out in a low cry of fright. The little cats eyes were clenched shut and her body was hunched awkwardly near the edge of a slab of rock. What is this place... Her round ears twitched, there were sounds coming from all around her. The sound of pebbles rolling against rock and a low rumbling that came from underneath her. Hungry

Finally she opened her eyes, or eye. At first it was as dark as it was behind her eyelids upon emergence, but blurry forms slowly start to take more solid shapes. She angled her head up, whiskers twitching with awe. The area above her sparkled, she had no idea what it was but she already felt at ease by its appearance.

Next, she looked down. Below her there seemed to be massive rocks that stood together. She had no word for it yet, but she would soon figure out they were called buildings. In fact, she had few words to describe anything she saw. Her brain was still trying to make sense of its own existence. Another rumble came from within her, one thing her brain was sure of was that she needed food.

Instincts kicked in and she inhaled deeply, there was a scent on the air that sent her stomach rumbling again. Food? She looked around, her single pale eye scanning the area. She could see almost clearly now that her eyes had adjusted. As she scanned, something moved. The smell was coming from that other creature.

Slowly, she rose to her feet, wobbling with little grace as she stepped forward. Her muscles felt like jelly at first, but soon her paws found purchase on the smooth rock and she pushed her way forward. Her strides became more and more confident as she approached the other creature. Looks like me... we are the same? Her stride slowed significantly and she stopped a ways away.

"Hello?" Her voice rasped, her tongue not used to such movements. The word sounded almost like a sound more than a word. But she believed it got her point across. It was a greeting, she knew that much. It seemed that she did not know the names for things, but she knew how to speak.

Aspen spun around, his tail waving all over the place. Frowning, he tried to get it under control - to no avail. What was wrong with him? He'd been fine before the rabbit! Well, that didn't matter! He just felt so happy and energetic, he should just enjoy life! "Hey there!" he greeted, grinning wider than what should have been possible. "Wow, you look almost just like me! We should totally be friends!" Aspen gave a little leap into the air for emphasis.

Wait wait wait wait wait, WHAT WAS THAT BUSHY THING BEHIND HIM? Aspen jumped again, this time in surprise, and lunged for it with his paws. That did nothing but make him fall to the ground, rather painfully. Scowling, he shook himself out, giving his now dust-filled fur a few licks. He'd clean that more later. Actually, now that he looked at the other him, they had a fluffy thing too. It was attached to their body. Oh, so it was a part of him and not something he should try to chase. Got it! he thought cheerfully, beaming and looking very proud at his discovery.

There was only a brief moment of silence before Rast found herself completely bombarded with excited energy. The little cat puffed up in surprise at such a happy greeting, but soon found herself getting just as excited. "Friends? You want to be my friend!" Her voice became steadier with each word. She knew what a friend was just by the way her copy had said the word. It was a good thing! A friend is a good thing!

A laugh squeaked out of her as the other cat jumped in the air and then started spinning wildly in a circle, only to face plant in to the ground. Her tail twitched, catching her own attention. This thing did look like fun to chase, but she learned from her doppelganger that if you try to chase it you will hurt your face. Instead, she curled her fluffy tail around her front paws as she sat down. This other me is very very silly. Her thoughts paused, Other me should not be what I call them, or maybe I can.

"What are you called? I can call you Other Me. You look like another me so that would make sense, I think." She grinned, proud of that name but also thinking that it took a lot of energy to say. "Or you can just make up your own word for me to call you! That works too." She bobbed her head up and down excitedly, feeling a more playful urge growing in her. Talking was fun, but maybe playing would be better. She awaited anxiously for their reply before instigating.

This was a situation that required serious thought! He had no problem with other him calling him other me, although he might meet others that didn't look like him, and then it wouldn't make much sense to have them call him Other Me. He tilted his head, trying to think of something others can call him. It was a moment before he found a nice set of sounds. That would be his name from now on!

"Aspen," he decided. "People who don't look like me can call me Aspen, but you can just keep calling me Other Me if you want. And yeah! I'd love to be friends with you!" He jumped again, this time in happiness. Then a thought struck him. The rabbit he ate had tried to get away from him by jumping. Perhaps that was why he was so jumpy! Yes, that made perfect sense. He jumped in happiness again. What an amazing discovery!

"Aspen!" She stood back up as she exclaimed his name. "Yes, Other Me can be your secret name!" Secret, that was something you kept quiet from others. Were there others? If there were, where are they? Do they all look like Aspen and herself? Rast shook her head, chasing away such complicated thoughts. She just wanted to play with her new friend! The little snow leopard watched her new friend bounce up and down with joy.

While he did this, she crouched down and wiggled her fluffy tail. She was ready to pounce. She pushed off hard with her back legs, launching into the air. However, it seemed as though she over estimated the space between them and instead flew over Aspen. Oh, but she still landed on him. She landed square on his back, but only with her back legs. The rest of Rast's body flopped onto the hard ground. The little leopard spat the dust out of her mouth and stood up. Her back legs were over Aspens left side and her front legs were on the opposite. From above they looked like a plus sign with spots. Perhaps she wasn't the best at playing, but it sure was fun!

"Yes! And your name?" he asked. Or maybe he didn't need to know that. They could just call each other "Other Me" all the time! Then Other Him crouched down. "Oh! Do you want to play?" Aspen imitated the movement, his eyes shining with excitement. Other Him landed on his back in a sort of plus sign. He could still move, so he rolled over onto his back, reached for her shoulders, and attempted to flip her over.

RE: The Very Hungry Cat - Rast - Aug 23 2018

Rast wriggled around awkwardly, stuck on Aspens back with only her front paws on the ground. As she was wiggling, she felt him roll over and then two paws on her shoulders. Next thing she knew she was no longer stuck as an awkward plus sign, but flipped on to her back. It happened in slow motion really, she almost got away with staying up right!

"Oof!" Rast folded her paws up to her chest in mock fear, but still laughed. Her eyes squinted as she did so, one a sightless glistening back stone and the other a pale sliver. Once she caught her breath she finally responded, "Rast!" The word bubbled out of her with ease and it seemed to fit. She had no idea what it meant but it sounded nice! "But you can call me Other Me too!" Maybe if they shared the same name they would remain friends forever. It made sense in her mind!

Rast focused her gaze on him, paws still folded against her body. It was when she actually took the time to look at her friend that she realized he had an orange/yellow thing on his head! "What is that?" She mewed, raising a paw to gesture at his forehead, now more curious than anything.

RE: The Very Hungry Cat - Aspen - Aug 23 2018

"Hmm?" Aspen reached upward with his paw, feeling out his forehead. "I don't know, actually. I think it's just a part of me. Like my paws, fur, and this." He waved his tail at Rast as an example. "You have something too!" The cub gestured at his eye. "It's black and has three little things below it that are also black. Maybe everyone has something similar."

RE: The Very Hungry Cat - Rast - Aug 23 2018

Rast listened, she supposed that all made sense. Her paw rose to press against the hard surface of her stones. Sure enough there were three bumps, she could not see out of her other eye but found that that did not concern her. In fact... Rast pressed her paw to the stone that replaced her eye and felt nothing. No pain or discomfort, maybe just a little pressure.

"I bet you're right!" The cub pulled her paw away from her eye and focused back on Aspen. "Maybe we should go find someone else and see if they have one too!"
