[Twinkling Sidequest] Animal Feed - Oliver - Dec 14 2018 He'd heard of the stranger, Naskital, in Pisces--the poor guy had lost all his pets, and needed help. There were others gathering the animals up--but he'd said, apparently, that he needed food as well, and Oliver knew he could aid with that. He was gathering plants again--growing them, first, of course, and leaving the roots to grow again. But he had armfuls (so to speak) of long grasses, grains, which he hoped could function as fodder, of a sort. He paused near a particularly tall clump of grass, setting his collection down and reaching out a taloned wing-"hand" to touch the grass, fingers splayed as he concentrated on growing it. Nothing happened, and so the hybrid was left staring at the grass, touching it. He spoke, at length. "...Heyyy. Do you think you could grow, a little, please..?" Note--anyone is welcome to join! RE: [Twinkling Sidequest] Animal Feed - Mercy - Dec 14 2018 His children were emerged, fresh into the world and already benevolent and filled with all of the kindness of the earth. As far as he was aware, the little ones were tucked away in the garden, sleeping away their woes and most certainly preparing for another boisterous bout of energy and playing. He trusted the little ones to stay safe and to take care of one another. The scarred old lion, then, set to meandering about Eridanus, uncertain of what in particular he was seeking out. Perhaps a drink or some exotic, unknown flower to bring back to the twins. He, of course, did not want to be absent for too long.
Mercurius didn't feel entirely safe by himself after his miscast of light. For now, he'd not cast anything related to that, for his and the children's sake. They did not need to see what horrors he had lived through without understanding and grasping them. If only he hadn't failed to rein in his thoughts and racing mind. Perking up toward the sound of a gentle, prodding voice, the lion stopped in his wanderings. Moonset eyes scanned the undergrowth, flickering through and behind each fern, each tangle of vines. Until, at last, there was someone who seemed to be the owner of the voice. For all his wariness, the stranger seemed nice; something about the innocent, dog-like face just spoke to him. Mercurius plodded closer, carefully bowing his head and keeping a rather great distance between himself and the stranger, he rumbled, Moments later, they had begun to grow a little taller and sprout spikes at their peak, lined with ripe and new seeds. @Oliver RE: [Twinkling Sidequest] Animal Feed - Oliver - Dec 14 2018
Oliver swivelled, a little wide-eyed at the sight of the white lion. Oh, no. He'd had this happen before! A cat turning up, asking what he was doing-... But then, this one didn't seem rude and angry. It seemed--nice? Hopeful, he began to speak. "Oh, there's--someone in Pisces who needs help? He fell through the ceiling and all his animals got away and he wants--Oh!" He startled as he glanced back and saw that the grasses had grown, and quickly began to pull the tops, murmuring soft "thank you--"s. It wasn't immediately clear if he was addressing Mercurius, however, or the grasses themselves--possibly he didn't know the lion had done a thing. He himself tried to grow the plants as he plucked them, but nothing further happened, and he shrugged it off. Plants did what they wanted, it seemed. Once he had a couple more armfuls, he turned his blue eyes to blink back at the lion. "Sorry, um--my name is Oliver. I heard he was having trouble--the one in Pisces, that is--and needs uhh... Crystals and his animals back, and food for them. So I'm getting them food, or--trying to. ...I hope that's okay?" he added, hesitantly. Hopefully this one wasn't another Guardian of Eridanus. @Mercurius RE: [Twinkling Sidequest] Animal Feed - Mercy - Dec 14 2018 Someone in Pisces who fell through the ceiling? Distantly, Mercurius stared up at Eridanus's own ceiling, marveling at the sheer height of it. In general, all of the caves were rather tall. To fall from that high up could mean nothing good. Of course, the stranger did not mention anything about injury, only... a lot of animals.
Anyways... perhaps fate had brought him to help this strange hybrid. Mercy edged a few steps closer, brows quirked, @Oliver RE: [Twinkling Sidequest] Animal Feed - Oliver - Dec 15 2018
Oliver was, by all appearances, trusting. He widened his blue eyes and quickly moved to the much larger lion to try and gently take the bundled grass from his jaws, and tuck it under his arms. Then he peered up at him, blinking, and smiled a little sheepishly. "Oh, thank you. Well-... After the fires, I started a garden in Canis," he began. At first, this might have seemed wholly unrelated to--well, anything. But Oliver continued. "I figured, well, if Eridanus burns down completely, we'll need plants in other caves--more than just the swamp, right--so that we still have some somewhere else. I want to fill Canis with life but it's really big," he added, almost childlike--and then, finally circled around to his point. "To do that I had to bring plants and seeds so I was gathering them?" He turned back, placing a hand over the other plants and attempting to magically grow them even as he spoke. "But then this green cat covered in plants showed up. He said he was the Guardian of Eridanus and this was his cave and he yelled at me a lot and said I shouldn't take plants. I thought he was gonna kill me," Oliver added, with a little shrug. "But I always grow more than I take. If-... it works," he added, eyeing the plants a little worriedly. When they began to grow and flower, his expression cleared, and he smiled at Mercurius. "It doesn't always work," he explained. @Mercurius RE: [Twinkling Sidequest] Animal Feed - Mercy - Dec 17 2018 Mercurius was eager to relinquish his grip on the grass stalks he was presently holding, even dipping his head down to make it easier. Moonlit eyes blinked softly, warmly, and he smiled at the strange crow-dog. He wasn't at all made impatient by Oliver's childlike rambling and roundabout manner of speaking, and listened attentively to every word.
As for the cat covered in plants, it rung a bell or two. @Oliver RE: [Twinkling Sidequest] Animal Feed - Oliver - Dec 17 2018
Oliver listened, in turn, just as attentively as Mercurius had done. He was about to respond, and gratefully, too, when he realized that the lion was the one growing the plants! With a gasp, he rushed to pick the plants up where the lion had set them down, his words tumbling out and over themselves faster than the babbling brooks of Eridanus. "Wait, you're growing those?! Thank you! I had no idea! I never met anyone else who grew stuff like this! Oooh, if you could help me in Canis, I'd-- He stopped. He stared up at the lion, blue eyes sprang wide, as if unsure what to say, for a beat. "I'd love that," he said at last, reverently, and then crouched down a little. "if you know more about plants--maybe you could teach me?! I've just been teaching myself, and--and I'm not really good at it," he admitted, quietly. "I've been trying to teach myself, like--for injured Gembound? To help? Like make them water or--fix bad water that's already there, you know, so they can drink it? And magic to warm them up and make them healthier and close wounds with--vines and stuff. But--I'm not good at the plants, yet." He blinked, as if remembering something. "Oh! But I have to get these back to Pisces. Do you--wanna come with me, maybe? You can bring some plants too, I'm sure he could use the help!" Oliver stared, hopefully. He was sure the animals would need more food; maybe Mercurius could bring some, too! @Mercurius RE: [Twinkling Sidequest] Animal Feed - Mercy - Dec 18 2018 Mercurius unintentionally shuffled backward, ears lowering as the crow-dog rushed to take the offered plants. Sudden movements still had him on edge, it seemed. The whole fiasco with his magic seemed to have served as a catalyst to that. He held a peculiar confidence that Oliver meant no harm, though, and relaxed almost immediately.
The pale beast drifted closer to another collection of undergrowth, face turned away but ears catching every word spoken. Oh, Oliver was a mender! Caves knew they needed more of those. Mercurius himself knew a little bit about healing, but had never heard of closing wounds with vines or to bring about clean water. Perhaps there could be a mutual exchange, here… Pawing at a cluster of rather well-grown grasses, the lorespinner looked back towards Oliver, nodding, Giving an encouraging bit of magicka to the grasses, the lion cut them at the bases and wrapped his jaws around them. Just before his mouth was full of plants, Mercurius glanced back to Oliver and added, @Oliver RE: [Twinkling Sidequest] Animal Feed - Oliver - Dec 18 2018
Oliver listened, and then widened his eyes, nodding. "I'd like that a lot. And thank you. I didn't realize it was you." He then turned, carefully shuffling with bundles of plants tucked up under his wings. "I'll go there now, if you want to come? It's not too far. If you--don't know the way," he added, with a sheepish glance behind him. His expression was kind, and he turned, making his way--with all the food--toward Pisces. exit Oliver ; @Mercurius RE: [Twinkling Sidequest] Animal Feed - Mercy - Dec 18 2018 Mercy smiled, simply, and took his thick bundle of grasses into his mouth, careful to balance them perfectly so that not a single blade would be lost. With a nod, the pale lion trailed after the crow-dog, offering a companionable silence thanks to the plants. It wasn't too long of a journey, and Caves knew the beast needed to stretch his legs.
