in the end, you're better off alone - Aaliyah - Mar 13 2020

After meeting Imp and being gifted the chalk pieces, Li had wandered the caves. It seemed to be all she did now. She was hesitant to walk up to anyone, but a part of her longed for the company. She had gone her entire developing life with someone at all times, and even if she’s spent a much longer time without Imperia than she had with them, the loneliness she felt still cut deep.

She left the chalk pieces somewhere, hopefully, hidden. She’d come back for them when she found something to carry them in. Imp had told her to take care of them, and she wanted to do that but it was becoming an inconvenience to carry them around with her. She didn’t have an easy way to carry them with her, nor did she really have an easy way to hold them.

She found herself back in Polaris. There always seemed to be something drawing her to this area, though she never knew what it was. The air still gave off that energetic feel that made her skin tingle. It almost made her want to use her magic, but there was no way she’d do that. Not now, likely not ever. She tried to use it once, figuring no harm could come from it...and promptly set a forest on fire. She wasn’t going to set Polaris on fire. It almost seemed like the cave had already had fire ravaging it, though a lot of time had passed since then.

Li wished she had the courage to go up to someone and talk to them. Nothing bad had happened lately from talking to anyone, but she was always still so wary. Others could turn on her at a moment’s notice. She was better off alone, where she’d be safe.

But as she looked at the activity from her spot against a wall, she couldn’t help but to long for interaction.

Feire

This time you're free; I know it's hard to believe.

Feire was very busy. He was busy doing all sorts of busy, busy things, like stamping on crawly bugs, and yapping as loudly as possible just to hear his voice bounce around the walls. Polaris was full of the little bugs, hiding under loose rocks and in the patches of moss that littered the area, just waiting for him to snuffle around and pilfer the insides.

His eyes snapped to a flicker of movement by a small rocky pool. A beetle, about the size of his paw was making a run for it, having been disturbed by the childish fox. Quick as a flash, he snapped up the bug, cracking it in between his teeth with a snap!

Feire’s eyes closed with pleasure, but he noticed another presence in the room, watching him. What he assumed to be a Gembound was sitting sadly by one of the walls. Feire didn’t really care about how the stranger was feeling, or what they even were, but he saw a new thing and his brain went ooh! New thing! and off he went. He bounded off to the stranger, screeching to a halt just a meter away from them, head tilted in curiosity and some excitement.

"Hey!" He yapped, teeth all pointy and maybe just a little covered in bug guts- but that was alright, because there was a new thing here! "Whaddaya doing?" The bugs had been brilliant, but he had been hearing about all sorts of crazy things-- like people making light out of nothing!

If Feire could see anything about that, there was no doubt that he wouldn’t leave it alone until he got it himself.

Li had seen the young fox as he jumped at bugs and yapped loudly. She had started to grow a little wary of him, though she was wary of everything so it wasn't too surprising. She was content to simply sit there and watch him. She had not expected him to notice her and come over.

She startled slightly as he spoke. "Uh," she started. "Hi?" Communicating with others was...difficult at best, and even worse when she wasn't expecting it. She shifted slightly. "I'm...not doing much. Sitting here. What, um, what about you?"

She hated Imperia for a lot of things. For all that they had done to her, and for all they...hadn't done. Such as teach her how to actually talk to others. The closest thing to that they had taught her was how to get others to trust her, only so she could go against their trust and stab them in the back. She had never used that skill, and she never planned to. It wasn't until she left Imperia that she realized how wildly unprepared for normal life she was. It had been cycles upon cycles, and she still didn't know how to talk to others.

Oh, good, it had spoken. Feire was just beginning to worry that in all of his enthusiasm he had just spilled his entire heartfelt introduction to a complete and utter statue. That had happened just once or twice before, but it was an honest mistake! That you couldn’t tell a stone statue from a living, breathing, brooding Gembound wasn’t exactly his fault now, was it?

Feire tilted his head again as the hybrid stumbled over their words. That was strange, usually adults (at least, he assumed that they were an adult-- big and strong looking usually checked off those boxes in Feire’s mind) didn’t have any trouble talking. Was there something wrong? Feire knew he got all stuttery when something scared him or surprised him, so maybe they were… scared? Thinking of only helping the hybrid, albeit in his own way, Feire only pressed closer.

"I’m aight! More interested in you, even over my bugs! Is summin wrong?" He popped down on his haunches to stare back up at them, babbling on. “‘Cause I know whenever I feel wrong and sc-aa-ry, I jus’ go hunting! Like the bugs, y’know!” He thought for a moment. ”Or… I go lookin’ for shiny things! Can’t pick up th’ water, but everythin’ else is pretty fair game! Say… Feire shuffled his paws and looked up, hope in his young eyes and an idea forming in his head. ”...Would you like to come huntin’ wit me? It’ll be fun, promise!”

Li's ears lowered as the fox stepped closer, and she instinctively stepped back. This only pushed her against the wall, though, and she felt a spike of panic go through her as she essentially felt trapped. She did her best to push the feeling down, to mask it. She swallowed nervously and tried to focus on the fox's words.

Was anything wrong? Well, other than being barely able to talk and scared of practically everyone she met, no. But she didn't really want to say that. So she just kept quiet as the fox continued. Go hunting...she had tried her best to hunt and eat often, so she wouldn't become the way she was cycles ago, after leaving Imperia. She had barely known how to take care of herself with no one else around and neglected her health. If she hadn't met Amras, who knows where she'd be now. She wouldn't have died, but everything would've been rather painful as she could barely move. And if Imperia ended up finding her like that...

She shuddered briefly at the thought.

"Uh, sure. I'll come hunting with you." It was definitely better than just sitting here, and maybe stretching her legs for a bit would do her some good.

Feire smiled his big toothy grin. He had never been hunting with a buddy before, but this person seemed pretty worthy of the position. His fur fluffed up, as mangy as it was, and he dropped into a sloppy hunting crouch, slinking away. Feire flicked his tail toward the Gembound, encouraging them to go further away from the cave wall.

”You’ll have a tough time findin’ buggies along the wall, lemme tell ya. They all only love the moss n’ loose rocks, ‘specially the big ‘uns.” He lowered his voice to an almost theatrical stage whisper, turning back to the creature. ”Say, I never got ya’ name. You got one, or am I gonna keep callin’ you ‘big cat thingy’ inside my ‘ed?”

His ears twitched as the scuttling of legs against hard rock registered. Feire snapped around just to catch the tail end of a centipede vanish under a mossy stone, looking for cover all too late. He dipped down and nudged the stone to one side, trying to pin down the slippery beast that was well over twice the size of his paw. In the end, he caught one half under his paws and the rest ground into a buggy mush in the moss.

”Well." Feire said a mite sheepishly. "Not my best catch, but blimey, not my worst ever! There was more than just a hint of enthusiasm in his eyes as he turned to the cat. "Your turn! Canna' be that hard to outperform, right?

Li slowly stepped away from the wall, feeling better now that the fox had stopped being so near. As she stopped and looked back at her and asked a question, she blinked. Right, right...name. "I'm Li." The words rolled smoothly off her tongue - the first ones to do so in a while. She'd never admit it to anyone, but she'd dedicated time to saying those two words, over and over, until she hardly ever thought of the name she had been given by Imperia. She was Li, not Aaliyah. A couple of moments passed before she spoke again, "And, uh, what's your name?"

She watched as the fox went after the bug. She had never done too much bug hunting herself. Imperia had always viewed it as childish, and prevented her from doing it as best they could. Sometimes, though, while they were sleeping, she'd manage to chase after some. One time Imperia caught her doing it, and she just said it was practice for hunting. Imperia had grumbled but let her continue after that.

It had stopped being as fun then, though.

The fox managed to catch half a bug, it seemed. She hoped she wouldn't do any worse than that; it would be embarrassing, no doubt. She listened closely. Faintly, she heard the scuttling of a bug. Her eyes snapped over to it and she saw a beetle. She lowered herself and moved slightly closer so she could easily catch it. With the bug in sight, she wiggled her butt a little and pounced. She landed on it, her paw over the bug so it couldn't escape. She wasn't sure what to do now - she didn't really want to kill it, even if it was just a beetle. So she simple held onto it and looked over at the fox.

Hm. Li. The fox wiped his stained paw on the moss as he thought about the name. Nice, simple. The cat-- no, Li, had found a bug, and was going after it like they were just a tad embarrassed to. Feire flicked his ears in confusion as Li hunted for critters. What was embarrassing about bug hunting? He had never had any problems with showing off, even if his attempts just landed him face-first in the dirt. Maybe it was an adult thing? Feire felt his mind screech to a halt- was there a rule against bug hunting with adults? Was he making poor Li break the rules of… adulting?

His brain finally registered that Li had asked him a question when she was already performing a pounce on an insect he hadn’t even seen yet. When she managed to pin the thing, Feire finally answered.

”Feire. Tha’s what I call myself, alright.” He peered closer to the bug underneath Li’s paw. ”Ain’t you gonna squish it?” He spoke, just a little confused. ”Or is this one of those adult things that ya just gotta do, because yer’ old, or whatever?”
