attempted batnapping - Umbra - Mar 17 2020

What a place the tunnel known as Tunnel K is; empty, misty, dark. It’s hard to see in the chilling fog of this place—it might be even harder to exist here. Not because of any inherent danger, but simply because this tunnel is devoid of life; wrong, in a fundamental way, a way that makes the gutless flee in fear. This is not a burial ground, a place where many died and their bones were stacked high, not like Canis—it simply exists as a place where none should roam. None at all.

Crack-in-the-World finds this absolutely delightful.

Oh, it can hear its headmates trying to dissuade it from being in the front—feel their instinctive fear at the thought of it taking control, even if none of them, including itself, can think of a reason why it being at the helm of their body should be so frightful. There’s a part of it that revels in their fear—yes, yes! It wants to be the boogeyman in the dark! It wants to be scary!

And then, there’s a part of it that simply revels in being here; in the dimness of the tunnel, hanging upside-down from the top of it with its wings spread to feel the mist swirling around it. This place feels right—all the other places in the caves are bright, bright, much too bright, but this? This is wonderful.

It loves this tunnel, an empty, empty place for it to play.

And play it does; preparing to reach its magic internally before it remembers—something. Vague; taking a plague from something much larger than it and playing a much more volatile game, one with teeth and magic… but it doesn’t remember who those people are or why it was there in the first place. Maybe it was just a dream?

It discards the thought and focuses on what it wants to do, even as the others tense. It wants… heat. A hot disease; something that makes a gembound hot from the inside. Mercury—the new one, the one that was made of two before they woke up—would like that, right? He likes fire.

No, I don’t. What the fuck are you doing, Crack? he answers, his voice and his emotions tinged with a tremble of fear.

Fear is good! Fear is fun; it doesn’t give Mercury any response, only takes that as a reason to keep going, using its magic to reach and shape and form…

Almost, almost—the magic is hard, and Crack gets the feeling it hasn’t used it in a while as it plays with it. The mental strand of it almost slips from its grasp, microbes spilling into their body, but they keep control, and keep pulling and pulling until what it wants comes to life.

Someone—Caliante, it thinks—calls out in a tone bordering a scream, Stop it! Stop it!

It sways as the magic catches up to it; there’s fire beginning to boil in their bloodstream and suddenly it feels all too hot. A dizzy grin makes itself known on its face; yes, yes! Fear! Fun! It’s having so much fun right now!

"Caliante." "Mercury." "Crack." "Tarragon." "Ripple."

Alpha's footsteps were much... lighter than usual. Its head was dropped into line with its back, shoulders rolling slowly with each passing step. The beast was in full hunting mode, and it didn't want clicking and rattling quills to get in the way - despite its bioluminescence glaring with quite a bit of strength through the tumultuous mists.

Acidic eyes flickered to and fro as it moved, scanning through the dim, dank air for signs of tunnel runners, lesser bats, anything to bring back to the good doctor. The last few creatures had been the first on that list, so maybe a change of pace would be appreciated. It lifted a meaty paw, leaning against the wall to idly scratch at its chest.

Nothing

The orthoclase sniffed once, and tilted its head downward - ah, right there was a bat. An easy catch, really. It wouldn't even have to bother hiding itself from the blind.

What Crack saw approaching was probably something like a symptom of its induced fever: four glowing, predatory eyes stealing through the mist; a crooked grin of far too many teeth; and a few other sharp filaments of that wicked green light. The nightmarish face dropped, preparing to descend upon the poor thing.

It sees—light. A green neon glow punctures the mists of the tunnel, many eyes staring through the darkness, warped with its feverish, swimming vision, and Crack finds itself filled with a sudden, visceral excitement.

The light is—fear, usually. Light is sharp and bright and scary and everywhere; almost nowhere is safe from the sharpness of it, and it scares Crack. Light is terror in its purest form, and usually it hides itself away while the others take control, because it’s easier to disconnect itself from the light when someone else is in control.

But this light… it reminds it of itself. The formless shadow with many eyes peering out from the dark, stuck in a too-solid body…

Wings spread as wide as it can in the dimness of the tunnel, stirring the mists with their black shape, and Crack pushes its magic out, trying to manifest itself, trying to show the creature that—Yes! Yes! I’m like you!

Nothing comes, and Crack feels abrupt disappointment. No, no; this was its chance…

...it will show the other later, then. It will prove to the other that they are the same.

For now, it settles in saying in a tone surprisingly soft for something like it, ”Li—ke you.”

When I speak.

When I think.

Alpha's quills flared out, rattling along with widening eyes. Weren't bats supposed to be blind? Their poor eyesight eliminated one integral sense for hunting - while another was exacerbated to great heights. The orthoclase thought it'd been quiet enough, but quickly realized that shuffling about wasn't a good enough explanation for this little thing looking directly at it.

The bat spread its wings out, and Alpha braced for a disappointing escape. It was disappointed in another way: the damn thing didn't flee at all. Instead, it up and started talking, stuttering out some nonsense about being like it or liking it.

Surprise's advantage lost, the monstrous face rose, then tilted back down. "Like me?" it grunted out, head tilting slightly. Alpha smoothed its quills down, if only to realize that it was suddenly fraternizing with something it intended to hunt and bring back. This strange desire to chit-chat was quickly outweighed by its pervasive sense of duty, and it growled, "you, come with me." Doctor had been looking for Greaters, right?

Not waiting for permission, it lurched down, jaws gaping to grab enough of the bat that it could steal it away - not at all being gentle.

Round 1/5 (sound good?)
Attack: Grab Umbra with its mouth
Defense: None...
Injuries: None...

There are a few moments where the other gembound pauses, repeating Crack’s words after it, and it nods slightly and keeps its wings spread, assuming that it’s just—well, it doesn’t know, it doesn’t know how things think, but it waits patiently for it to respond nonetheless.

Its response of ‘grab’ is, then, completely and utterly unexpected, and even though it doesn’t know gembound very well it’s not stupid—it knows it’s being attacked.

An attack? A fight?

Maybe it’s Crack’s still-feverish state, the way its body feels too hot and the thoughts bouncing around in its head are dizzy and distorted, but it thinks that a fight is fun.

Yes, yes, fight—play! Just like it was playing before, but with a partner that’s like it!

It feels jaws clamp around it, fangs digging into its fur and drawing blood, and—oh, that’s slightly less fun.

It struggles in the gembound’s grasp, wings flapping with a leathery sort of sound as its instincts tell it to escape the pain however possible, to no avail.

No, no, not fun! It hisses up at its attacker, its kin who clearly plays too rough, and aims a burst of magicka at it, intending to make it sneezy or itchy or—something to make it let go!

It doesn’t know, it just knows it doesn’t like being stuck in something’s jaws like this! It hurts!

When I speak.

When I think.

Round 1/5 (yeah, that sounds good!)
Attack: N/A
Defense: Make Alpha sneeze to let go
Injuries: Bite marks around body

RE: attempted batnapping - Orthoclase-Alpha - Mar 31 2020

There was immediately a struggle, though Alpha really only noticed because the whap! whap! whump! of panicked wings was already starting to grate on its nerves.

It gave a few half-hearted shakes of the head - fully knowing that it'd seem like the world was just spinning a thousand times over for its quarry - and was suddenly struck with the irrepressible urge to sneeze.

Alpha continued to trudge along down Tunnel K, but by the Masters it needed to sneeze. It paused abruptly, inhaling sharply and trying to drown it. Quills flared up, and it unwittingly just completely threw the bat with the violent trajectory of its sneeze. This... this was a powerful, booming sneeze worthy of only fathers. Its entire body jolted with it, and it immediately stared down in panic.

Where's the bat!?

Round: 2/5
Attempt: Resist the urge to sneeze Dad sneeze time.
Defense: Rock-hard WILLPOWER
Injuries: None...

RE: attempted batnapping - Umbra - Apr 06 2020

A dry cackle erupts from its mouth as its playmate sneezes, flinging Crack none-too-gently out of its bitey grip and into the air, where it quickly reorients itself with a beating of its wings. Its head spins, and it’s uncertain if it’s from the violent sneeze or the fire of the virus in its body, but it doesn’t care where it’s from, because this is way more fun than being carried around in the mouth of someone who doesn’t know how to play right.

And it’s okay, because this one is clearly at least a little different, even if its many (it can't really count how many considering how dizzy it is) glowing eyes mark it as the same; clearly it just needs to be taught how to play!

Playing doesn’t involve biting and carrying away—no, no, playing has to be fun for everyone.

It takes its playmate’s brief moments of confusion to circle around it, trying to spy a weak spot through the shifting mist so it can bite and spread its fever, its new toy to share with others!

Maybe there? Its vision is spinning, hazy like oil through water—let’s try it out!

It tucks its wings against its body and dives towards the other gembound, all but dropping out of the air with its teeth bared, ready to clamp down on an available surface, armor or not.

When I speak.

When I think.

Round: 2/5
Attempt: Bite Alpha, spread high fever
Defense: N/A
Injuries: Bite marks around body

RE: attempted batnapping - Orthoclase-Alpha - Apr 06 2020

As it turns out, it wouldn't be hard to find the bat again. It was midway through casting out its senses of blood when a something smacked headlong into the joint of its forearm and stayed there - with teeth caught around a chitinous plate, of course.

Now... it was a matter of twisting around enough to grab the bat in its mouth. Alpha tucked its chin first, rearing up slightly as its teeth snapped. Finding that to not work, it turned its head nearly upside down, tilting up to try and yank Crack off itself.

Round: 3/5
Attempt: Peel Crack off to HoldTM
Defense: None...
Injuries: None...

RE: attempted batnapping - Umbra - Apr 06 2020

[M because Mercury thinks the word "fuck" and people tag for this right]

As it turns out, apparently it’s kind of hard to pinpoint a fleshy spot to bite down on and draw blood when it’s dark and misty and Crack’s vision and head are both spinning in equal measure, and it nearly cracks a tooth on the hard carapace of the creature’s body.

And Mercury, who has been also going through this dizzying fever that Crack thinks is a wonderful idea, a great goddamn idea to make them all sick and make him feel like he’s burning up, has had enough of this ineffective playing around.

No matter what Crack might think about a playmate and teaching this monster the right way to play, there’s more important things at wing—like the fact that they’re clearly being attacked and potentially abducted, neither of which ranks particularly high on Mercury’s to-do list.

So their body stills as Mercury all but shoves Crack out of the figurative front seat, taking control of wings that feel very off and—goddamn it, he knows the basics on how to use these but he’s not an air person—promptly having his train of thought interrupted because holy shit those teeth that were about an inch away from clamping down on them again sound sharp.

And then, suddenly, those teeth are around them again, and yes, they ARE fucking sharp, digging into their fur and flesh none too gently, and Mercury has had enough of this shit.

He breathes in as best he can with the jaw of whatever creature this is clamping around their body, calls on his magic, and attempts to breathe a big ‘fuck you’ into its face.

When I speak.

When I think.

Round 3/5
Attempt: Burn Alpha's face
Defense: The best defense is a good offense (fire)
Injuries: MORE bite marks around body

@Orthoclase-Alpha

RE: attempted batnapping - Orthoclase-Alpha - Apr 06 2020

All of the struggling stilled for a second, and Alpha stood in place for that pause - expecting some kind of magical assault or another sneeze to force it to drop the bat. Rather brashly, after a full beat, the orthoclase pressed on. The bat's twisting and turning would wear him out eventually and this (basically) abduction could proceed quietly.

Except... the side of its jaw was getting really hot. Searing, even.

Growling to hide the sharp whine as pain receptors activated full-force, Alpha's mouth slackened enough for the poor thing to flop out of it again. Gnashing its teeth together and glaring around with watery eyes, it hissed, "HEY!" Paralytic venom dribbling through its gums, the orthoclase was bound determined to keep track of where the bat was.

Round: 4/5
Attempt: Get some venom ready.
Defense: None...
Injuries: Burnt on the face :(
