UPS CAN STILL DELIVER PACKAGES?? - Orthoclase-Alpha - Apr 09 2020

The heat was sweltering here, closer to Hydra than Canis - and it relished in it quite a bit. Perhaps the tiny neonate in its mouth didn't, given the squirming that'd started. That didn't matter, though, seeing as the good doctor's... lab was already in full view. Alpha listed towards the wall, trudging up the trail with its head lowered. Towards the top, where it evened into level ground on the first ledge, the orthoclase deposited the civet.

"We're here," it grunted, awkwardly patting the little mammal on the rear, urging him forwards. Prowling further up, it called, "Doctor. I have a - Little Hunter for you. Not another bat."

Alpha then waited quietly... taking these moments to plonk down lazily, blocking the entirety of the trail with its bulk.

Despite his excitement and curiosity to meet 'Doctor' and learn what chasing knowledge was, the little civet was getting uncomfortable. The big hunter, despite it's gentleness, still had a mouth full of pokey teeth. And this new tunnel was hot- much hotter than Orion, where he had hatched. He squeaked gratefully when he was finally put down, sort of awkwardly plopped onto his stomach.

When nudged forward, He got up and toddled forward a few steps, looking around this new area curiously. He sniffs the ground before sitting down, still looking around.

He looks back at Alpha, then back at the rest of the 'lab,' as if quietly asking where the Doctor was.

RE: UPS CAN STILL DELIVER PACKAGES?? - Doctor - Apr 09 2020

The one-eyed vulture's head popped up from behind a rock on a ledge higher overhead the moment his name was called. That single eye blinked, then fixed down on Alpha, and the tiny kitten-creature beside him.

"Ahhh, Orthoclase-Alpha! How very good to see you!"

The vulture spread his broad wings--some ten foot wingspan or so--and leapt, descending to Alpha's feet in a brief glide. Then those wings folded, his single eye--and the gemstone one--regarding the child with warm enthusiasm. For a moment he wondered whether the child was meant to join them, or as a subject for his tests--but surely Alpha would not have brought him the former. Still, it would be prudent to ask. "For testing, yes? How excellent! Does it have a name?"

Doctor tilted his head this way, then that, shuffling around Vivianite with a vulture's waddling walk, wondering which tests might work best on this one.

I so rarely have youth to test on. Perhaps a test as to how early injury affects growth-? Do broken limbs change adult potential, I wonder-? Will early illness make an adult undersized-? These are things to know.

Well, hopefully the doctor was in -

Ah, there he is. Alpha's head snapped up to meet him, tracking him as he approached with a greeting. A greeting which it returned a somewhat pleasant grunt, "you too." Felt more like a canned response than anything else.

"For testing," it replied, then finally cast its gaze down at the civet, "I don't know." Acidic eyes blinked slowly, a claw reaching up to scratch at its throat, "I didn't ask. Just brought it here."

His head swiveled around to track Doctor as he glided down. He squeaked happily, standing up and walking a couple steps towards the vulture.

"Name?" He asks, tilting his head. He was too young to really know what a name was, and definitely didn't have one yet. He stared up at Doctor and Alpha with large, curious eyes as they spoke.

As Doctor began to waddle around, he continued to follow the vulture's movements. Was this what 'chasing knowledge' was? It seemed pretty anti-climatic, with a lot less running and a lot more watching.

Doctor beamed.

As best a vulture could, at least.

He folded his wings neatly behind him, pulling himself up a little straighter, and offering Vivianite a benevolent look. "You are my first real test subject, little one; and so I shall call you One, at least until the Overseer returns. Perhaps if he knows the name of your gemstone we can extend that, hm? Now--I am Doctor. You're going to feel a little pain, but it won't last very long, yes? And it will be for the good of all-" he turned to Alpha, here. No point in delaying, in drawing this out. Best to get the hard part over with, and he could explain further as the child--hopefully--recovered.

"Thank you, Orthoclase-Alpha. Would you do me a favor, please, and break the right front, and right hind legs? -You may take a rat, or some water, if you're hungry," he added to Alpha. Accompanying this was a nod up to the ledge, where upturned, half-buried skulls served as both water bowls and potted plant holders. Herbs grew there, and water lay stored in the heat; a few rats, spines broken, lay paralyzed on the rock. "None of them are diseased, currently."

He paced away a little, to give them room, and continued speaking. "More control subjects would be better, of course, but we make do with what we have, yes? Ha. Well, breaking one side--that will tell us, as it recovers, whether an early break causes issues later on. Stunted growth, slow movement, compared to the other side. Important information for the Overseer's tests, designs, and so forth, I should think..." Doctor rambled on, waddling up to his rats to check them briefly over--leaving Alpha to, hopefully, the dirty work.

One was as good of a name as any. Less flattering than Little Hunter.

Addressed, the orthoclase looked back over from where it was tracing some incredibly interesting geometry on the walls. Interesting in the manner that it wasn't just generic smoothed-down wall, but a slight divot worn beneath. Alpha had a talent of finding any way to twiddle its thumbs without twiddling its thumbs or appearing to be too distracted. It nodded, shuffling to its feet and moving higher up the trail.

It made a come here gesture with one hand, then reached out to snare both of One's right legs at the same time and squeeze them rather brutishly, until they made the muted crack! of bones fracturing. That done, Alpha released.

A slight sneer graced its features, but it gave a rather loud sniff, shaking its head and inviting itself to crowd Doctor's space. It wasn't going to pass up free food - even if it was just one rat. Not at all inconspicuously sniffing the largest for disease, it grabbed it around the throat, crunching once or twice until it was dead.

Backpedaling - and nearly falling off the ledge - Alpha waited with a mouth full of rat to be dismissed.

The newly named One continued to watch as Alpha and Doctor- mostly Doctor, really- spoke, which seemed to go on and on forever. He didn't really understand what they were talking about, being as young as he was, so he just quietly played with a stray pebble on the ground while the two conversed.

When Alpha gestured for him to come over, One did just that. He squeaked in surprise when he was grabbed, but just thought it was a game- that is, until Alpha squeezed down hard.

One let out a loud squeal of pain. In a fit of panic, he attempted to bite one of Alpha's hands, but his teeth snapped down on air. Afterwards, he lay stunned, staring up at Alpha with a bewildered sense of betrayal.

Doctor watched, flinching just a tad as the actual crack of bones resounded through the tunnel. Muffled, yes, but still those of a child, still something to wince at.

Alpha, though--Doctor glanced to where the beast sat, like a good dog having earned its treat, and waddled over to him as the child writhed in agony. He'd let that wear itself out, while he looked over the Sentinel. "Thank you, thank you. Very much thank you! And you are good, yes-? Any aches, any pains, injuries that need my... attention?" he asked, sending a brief flood of strengthening prokaryotic energy Alpha's way.

Then he hobbled back over toward the child, head darting this way and that as he looked 'One' over.

"Painful, I know. But it passes! We will spend time here. You will heal, yes? We will see what happens. It is to help others," he assured Vivianite, "Hard to see now, I think, but you will."

Alpha didn't look down as the child as he squealed and writhed, nor did it when he continued to moan in pain and stare up in betrayal.

Out of sight, out of mind, as they say.

Doctor hobbled up, giving his thanks and asking about its health, to which it grunted a brief "I'm fine." Belatedly, it tacked on manners: "thank you, Doctor."

With that, it pivoted, stepping over One and trudging off to some private nook to choke down the rat.
