When You Try Your Best And You Might Succeed

Comet sat on one of the smaller islands, and looked out through the cavern. This was her second time here in Fornax, the cave filled with water. It was were her magic was at its strongest, not including Polaris, that cave literally crackled with magic. Surrounded by water, on an island, the perfect place to practice magic. Not only that, she was also trying some experiments with them, like trying to push the extent of what you could do with bubbles.

The spell had worked better than she thought it would, and the bubbles floated everywhere. That was when she got the idea. What if she combined all the bubbles to make one mega bubble? How big could the bubble be? And then: What if the bubble formed around herself? Now that the idea got going, her mind was set, she was going to make a huge bubble. But first, she wanted to start with a big enough bubble at first so she wouldn't have to use too much energy after that to make it better. None of the current bubbles seemed adequate, that meant making more.

More bubbles floated up, but they were not the right size. In fact, they were even smaller than the previous bubbles that she had made. That was not good, Comet decided to try again, the first bubble had to be a good one. Unfortunately, this time, they still were not big enough. She gave a big sigh, guess she'll just use the original bubbles then.

James had watched for a while, observing the young wolf as she practiced. He could see where she needed work, where she was weak, where she was strong. Her youth contributed to the blatant look and feel of her magic, though he could tell that it was strong. Though really, he shouldn't say anything, what with his magic going haywire on him.

His spells failed to work, most of the time, and he wasn't sure why. It was horribly frustrating, to say the least.

Spreading his wings, he took flight, gaining a bit of altitude before coasting down towards his daughter, landing gently behind her.

"What are you doing all the way out here?", he asked softly, rather amused, "I'm surprised you managed to get past Sun this morning. He was awfully clingy. It took both Ari and I to get him to let go of my feathers."

Comet gave a slight jump as she watched James glide down next to her. "Oh, hey renny!" she stopped focusing on her bubble problems and turned her head to look at the horse. "I'm practicing magic. I found this place had a lot of water, which is perfect for my magic. I woke up extra early to get here, Sun was too busy dreaming about fruits or something." she smiled, "Do you want to practice with me? I could use some tips. Right now I am trying to make a HUGE bubble!" Now that she had said it out loud, the idea did seem a bit outrageous. But she was sure she could do it! This time the spell worked, and the bubbled floated free in the air.

"A huge bubble?", he asked, laughing softly, "I might be able to help. I have a spell called, 'Telekinesis'. It allows me to pick up objects, depending on it's strength."

James focused on the water and breathed in before exhaling, using his breath to (hopefully) allow the flow of magic to come easier. He lifted up the water, the bubble forming in the air, about the size of a basket ball. It jiggled back and forth, less of a bubble and more of an unstable orb.

"Magic is a very fickle thing," he explained, looking down at Comet, "It has no master, but you can guide it, like one would divert a river, but like that river, eventually it will return to it's source. The air, the ground, other bodies. You just have to guide it into a shape that suits your needs and allows it to return from whence it came."

Bursting the bubble, the water fell back into the ocean, creating a ripple across the water.

"The best way to learn to control it is to focus on your breathing. Let your feelings guide you," he said.

Comet was worried that James would not like her idea very much, but he did! With a spell called 'Telekinesis' apparently. That sounded really cool. She watched closely as he slowly lifted up the bubble with his spell. "Wow that's so cool!"
The wolf pup looked up at the horse, as he explained about magic. Wise words, they were. Then, for emphasis, she guessed, he burst the bubble and the water returned to the lake-- where it came from. A perfect metaphor for magic.
Comet took his advice, and concentrated on her breathing. Making each breath even, steady, and focused. Then her feelings, calm, determined, and REALLY WANTING TO MAKE THAT BUBBLE! She focused all her energy on the spell, hoping that this bubble would be big.
It floated into the air, big, shiny, and near perfect. "Yay!" now she just needed to make it bigger, and make sure it didn't pop. She looked at James, to see if he had any more tips.

"Good!", he praised, "With practice, you'll get better. No one is perfect, but you can't become great at something without practicing."

For emphasis, he tried again, attempting to also make a bubble. It rose up again, but this time it was a bit smaller. He pointed and gestured with a wing to point it out.

"Sometimes you can't help but channel a weaker flow, but it's not entirely your fault," he said, "It's really up to luck and experience. The more you practice, the less times you'll fail. But failure is natural and not something to be feared. Failure just means you need to try harder. Or, if you tried your best, that what you were doing just wasn't for you."

Comet beamed at his praise and promised herself to keep practicing. She watched him try to make a bubble again, but this time it was not as big. She listened to him explain about luck and experience. It was true, she remembered that sometimes she failed to cast an easy spell that she had already gotten good at, so it a relief that it wasn't always her fault. BUT, Comet told herself that she would still work hard on practicing, so she would fail her spells less. It was embarrassing sometimes when they didn't work. It could also be dangerous. "That makes sense!" she nodded. Many of his tips were very helpful, and she hoped that he could practice with her more other times.

Now, she decided to stay with her original bubble, and make it bigger. What spell would do that? Perhaps she could make more bubbles and merge them, or some other way? Maybe she should try merging first. And if they refused to combine, maybe James could use his 'Telekinesis' spell to force them together. The bubbles floated out, but they were pretty small. Still, it may work.

James looked to the bubbles and hummed gently, considering. He readied his magic to try, ears perked up. Gently, he moved the two bubbles together, the combined strength of their spellcasting allowing the bubbles to merge and form one massive one. He smiled and wrapped a wing around Comet, pulling her close to nuzzle her head.

"Excellent! Teamwork makes the dream work! When multiple Gembound combine their strengths, great things happen!", he said, smiling happily.

He kept the spell up for a little longer, happy to have helped complete Comet's goal.

"Is there anything else you wish to learn? I could help you practice some exercises, if you want," he said.
