Magicka Trading - Opinion Poll - Game Master Dark - Sep 09 2020
Hey folks! In response to some mention of this concept, staff have discussed the idea of trading In-Character items for OOC Magicka. We'd like to hear your opinions!
What is meant by this? If a character wanted to, for example, trade out found gemstones or created dyes, the player could offer these for an OOC Magicka cost.
What's the downside? At the moment, Magicka is a purely OOC (out of character) function. Trading IC (in-character) items for an OOC currency may feel a little too much like a game shop; it doesn't make a whole lot of sense and might feel "cheaty" to some (some players have more time to post than others), and immersion-breaking to others (trading IC for OOC, when nothing is actually offered in return IC).
What's the upside? Origin has no real trading currency, so this may be an opportunity to implement one. If the players want to make this option available, we can try to figure out a method to make Magicka a somewhat IC element that players could attempt to use to trade, and characters can exchange Magicka for items on an IC basis instead. This could open some interesting roleplay opportunities. We CAN try to make that work; but we'd like to get your opinions on this before we move forward!

Just an idea, but what if like as a special event that happens maybe every few months or something there can be a festival where gembounds gather in Polaris to trade IC stuff for IC items? I do feel like IC to OOC trading would not work too well.
Maybe we can try IC to OOC for like a week to try it out?

if it helps anyone in consideration... personally (as a member, not a gm,) i feel as if this might gamify origin a bit and take away from the rp to make a quick buck.
to me, magicka exists as an out-of-character indicator for character progression and an incentive to post and/or do art. it's literally just cash you get for contributing to the game, one way or another. bringing it in from in-character means might commodify items that were already being bartered for or gifted to other characters/people (life-bearing stones, hybrids(?), dyes, et cetera...) for the sake of making them and spreading them around.
making and sharing things are incentivized enough by the rp that occurs between characters and the magicka for completing any given thread, in my opinion.
plus, one of origin's rules that gets cited a lot is that ic and ooc are separate from one another. i just don't feel all that great about it. if it does get added in, i don't plan to ever engage with it.
all that being said, it would be a minor enough thing because stones and dyes aren't all that special ic (especially with the random chance of what's inside stones.) they're easy enough to get on your own with a quick solo or two.

i would like to second navey's take on the matter — and also to state for the record that the goods and woodworking services of Toys R Damask come from the heart and always will, even if this bill passes and other local businesses choose to sell out to ooc commodification.

Oh I really love the IC goods festival idea!! I'd love to see something like that. Maybe your characters could set it up or something?? I love that. Like a flea market or something hahah
For what it's worth, I also voted no in this poll because I'd like to see IC event/interaction/goods remain IC, and magicka does feel too OOC for me despite being the source of character life lol. We've always had characters barter and trade and I really love the creativity it can spawn in characters themselves!
