I don't know why I'm here - Itri - Oct 05 2020

Itri trudged along at the bottom of the mesas, trying to find a creek to drink some water. It was a good thing that he had scales instead of skin, which helped protect him from burns at least. But that didn't stop the heat from cooking his body. It was not easy living in Hydra, and if he knew of others caves than this one, he probably would've left already. But survival was already hard enough, going on a journey across this cave to leave it would be even harder.

As it turned out, heat was one of the least of the pangolin's worries.

Gentle vibrations thumped through the ground beneath his feet, at first. The rather slow-moving creek rippled faster. A scale deer bleated softly as it bolted for cover. Then, a brief convulsion ripped through the crucible. It slithered up the walls. Mild as that quake had been, it was enough to send a shower of sandstone raining down the corridor. Many of the falling rocks were rather small, but a few were large enough to kill anything it landed on.

Itri's feet were not the most sensitive things, but even he was able to feel the vibrations in the ground. He dismissed it as just some hallucinations, but then the creek started to ripple faster than usual. Something was up. Suddenly, there was one big convulsion, and sandstone started falling down into the narrow valley like place he was in.

Pangolins weren't very fast, so it wasn't a surprise that Itri was a slow runner, and a slow dodger too.

Being a slow dodger, Itri winced as one of the rocks landed on his tail. Luckily his tail was smooth, so he tugged it out without too much problems, but it felt like it cracked a bone. He would have to check that later. The pangolin continued running back and forth across the place, dodging rocks as best as he possibly could.

After a time, the rain of sand and boulders subsided. The last of them settled with booming thuds and formed a wall. Many had fractured on impact, leaving a jagged minefield for any denizen of Hydra to clamber over.

It was sheer luck that the little pangolin managed to survive without seeking the shelter of some nook in the wall. He had the potential of a fractured tailbone, but little else. It was quiet. No Lesser dared to emerge so soon after the landslide.

Itri is safe. He may now exit or do whatever he desires for two in-character hours, before requiring another GM roll.

Dragging his tail behind him now hurt, and Itri winced every time it went over a rock. He had come to the conclusion that being in between the tall formations of stone put him at risk of more rock slides. That meant climbing to the top of one of them. Pangolins had sharp claws made for climbing trees, that may or may not help with climbing rocks. After all, they were different things.

Itri found a good trail up a mesa really quick, and proceeded to climb to the top, not an easy feat. It was a good thing that his tail wouldn't be of much use here, because there were no branches or things that it could be used to grab onto. Once he reached the top, he decided to take a nap.

The pangolin hobbled up to the top of the mesas, broken tail and all. Heat seared into the scales of his back; there was not a shred of shade to protect him up here. None, but the shadow of something high above. A shadow which drew nearer and nearer, with leathery wingbeats that thundered through the air.

Itri would come to learn that no part of Hydra was particularly safer than others.

An eyehook—full-grown from the looks of its massive wingspan—was making a dive for the curled up Gembound, talons outstretched to snatch him up.

Itri was woken up from his nap by the sudden absence of the heat. It was, in fact, the large shadow of the eyehook vulture. When he squinted at the bird for a bit, the realization hit him that he was in a deadly situation. Again. He was too slow to run with her broken tail, so he decided to meet it head on, and try to scratch at it's body once it got close.

Perhaps Itri's slowness was a matter of attitude, rather than any physical impairment. He made the unwise decision to commit to facing his predator. The hooked claws of a baby pangolin were nothing compared to the might of a bird whose wingspan easily hit fifteen feet. It barely reacted to the scratches inflicted upon its talons.

Talons, which were now closing around the pangolin's body in a crushing grip. The eyehook flew up and up in a dizzying spiral, talons pricking more and more at the scales along Itri's body. Just when it seemed the bird might squeeze him all the way to death... it dropped him.

It was a long thirty feet to fall.

Itri has one chance to somehow keep gravity from chrysalizing him... though, that might not be such a good thing.
