Like Something From Another World - Jasmedai - Nov 06 2020

The everblooming tree held a shape beneath. Nestled in the grass, against the trunk, was a stone. Large for a newborn gembound. Equally grassy in color, marbled grey's whites and green. Fallen blooms, fat and pale, rested against the chrysalis's surface. Smooth and glassy, with nary a crack. And then, there was. A line began at the base, travelling up the stone and over. It multiplied, until the whole surface was covered in hairline cracks. And then, it crumbled.

A vine snaked from the wreckage. Then two. Four. A mass of roiling green pulled itself from the rubble. In the center was a pale green bud, large, even within the mass of vines. At least 6 feet tall, and yet still to achieve the rich red coloration of adulthood. The bulb split, dark green teeth needle glimmering in a facsimile of a smile.

"Hello," a voice called. Child-like, yet not very high pitched. "Hello," it said again. Singsong, it repeated the word. Giggling with amusement, and joy from the discovery. It began to writhe, inching from the knoll with spiral movements. And then it paused. A vine found a flower beneath it's thorny length. It froze just above it, a thorn centimeters from pricking it. The vine curled back, and then around the delicate thing, and hid it gently under and within the mass of vines. And then, she continued her exploration of the knoll. Eyes to the ground, curiosity piqued.

How odd the sprout was—moving and crawling across the palace's lawn—but perhaps stranger was the trinket lying in its path.

Having its eyes fixed on the ground was a prime strategy for locating objects such as the already discovered flower. The lighting of Cepheus rendered the grasses in purples and oranges, but anything out of sorts stood starkly, a bit like a sore thumb.

In this case, it was the top of a sort of waterlogged box haphazardly buried beneath some long-dried and dead grasses. It was simple in construction, being made from scraps of wood, and no larger than six inches wide and two inches tall. If Jasmedei put in the effort to unearth it and open it, it'd find a number of quite ornate-looking things: a length of smudged golden chain; what appeared to be a crumpled silver wing, made of intricate filigree; and, a faceted glass sphere with a pupil-sized hole in its center.

All of them were in a rather poor state, having suffered the abuse of time and any moisture that'd leaked into the box. All in all, though... it was quite a pickpocket's stash.

Queen of Lies was no longer a toddler now. She had longer arms, a longer face under her white mask with pink cheeks and lips, her hair 'golden' and falling just past her ears, curling around beautifully. She wandered the gardens, hands clasped together, legs carrying her along. She was beauty, she was grace and she would totally eat your face.

She heard the 'hello' and went to inspect it, walking forward with her arms now at her sides. There was a necklace around her neck, carefully carved into different shapes. It would be beautiful... were it not made of teeth.

"Hello~?", she cooed, walking along one of the paths and turning a corner.

She stopped as she peered at Jasmedai, head cocked, "... Hello."

Queen shifted forward and trilled, chittering under her mask, curious about this new one.

Jasmedai's vines found the box before her eyes. She felt the scraping of a hard surface against them. Her bulb turned to them, leaning close. Barely tucked beneath dried grass, it was an easy spot for the plant. She pushed aside the dry grass with a vine, taking a moment to rub it and listen to the strange noise it made.

Then, she turned to the box. Twisting it in her vines, becoming familiar with the hard, woody texture. The strange wetness. It was minuscule compared to her. And then, she realized it could be opened! It was on a hinge! Old and soft, threatening to fall apart at any moment. But the newborn plant didn't know that. She just cooed with excitement. She , just messing with the actual hinge, instead of looking inside.

A hello echoed. Jasmedai tucked the box within her vines, close to her bulb. "Helloo," The infant called. "Hello! Hello...hello! Helllllo. Hello?" She trailed off as the other came into view. Tall, insectoid, with a necklace of strange white objects around her neck. Jasmedai found herself instantly drawn to it. And even further up, there sat a face. Humanoid. Instinctively, Jasmedai's tongue snaked forward, a cherub's pallid green face at the end.

"Hello," It spoke, a smile on its lips. Dark green eyes blinked. Jasmedai began to slink closer, stopping just before the strange being. The clam-like eyes on her bud stared unblinkingly at the other. At the new thing. A vine snaked out, wanting to take the necklace for her own.. She wanted to call it pretty, but with a lacking vocabulary, cooed and gurgled.

Queen lurched away and clicked, "Oh... you can have this. If you let me look at that box you have."

Her eyes had caught it when she pulled it close, and she wondered what was within, "I'll give it back after."

Would she? Hm. Maybe. Probably.

She held up a hand to touch the vine, cooing and trilling in interest, "Are you so... interesting. You are new, yes? Who are you?"

What was it's name? Did it think itself a female, a male, or neither? Perhaps both? She wanted to know. She wanted to learn, to show like she'd shown the others. Like she'd shown Marshmallow to fly and to be sly, like she'd shown Matthieu that friends weren't so bad, how she and Blue had shown each other love.

"You are not... edible?", she asked after a moment, mandibles clicking under her mask, wanting to taste.

Jasmedai curled tighter around her treasure. It was called a box, huh? It was Jasmedai's box! Hers hers only! She poked and prodded the box within her coils. The baby head twisted into a grimace. Jas did not want to share. Her vine recoiled when Queen's hand touched it. She'd been reaching for Queen's necklace. Not intending to be touched in return. The lure retreated within Jasmedai's bud, and she clamped her jaws.

"Jas' box." She said. She made sure it was tucked close to her bulb, the vines surrounding her twisting so their thorns faced outwards. "No looking." She shied away from Queen and her hand, and slunk a few steps away. "No have." She thought on Arwen's other words.

"New..." She repeated. She knew that word! "Jas is new! Jas is me. Edible...?" She trailed off. The word wasn't familiar to the newborn. "What is edible? You are edible? Box is edible?" She felt the box in her vines, now curious. There was a minuscule squeaking sound as she once again began to play with the hinge.

Queen cocked her head, "What about what's inside? Can I see that? Is it shiny?"

She glanced around and hummed, searching through a bush after a scent... got it. She picked up a mouse and held it out, her hand thin enough to reach through carefully and snatch it up before it could run. She would be an adept hunter one day, she hoped.

"This is food," she said, and held it out in offering, "You eat it. Edible means you can eat it. Some things you can't, like rocks. Too hard."

She swayed gently for a reason unknown, "Jas~! I like that name. Very faerie. That box isn't edible, it's metal, you can't eat metal because it's too hard."

She took off her necklace and weighed its value, her greed and kindness warring with each other as she tried to decide whether or not it was worth it to hand over. Hm.

"Inside..." she said. Jasmedai's bud lowered, her vines relaxing, and from the depths of her green tangle a sliver of wood could be seen. The child didn't say anything, but slowly she was warming up to the idea. And then, abruptly wasn't when she realized Arwen had called her food.

"Jasmedai not food!" She said, bud cracking enough to show dark needle teeth. "Jas eats food." The whole 'faerie' thing went over the plant's head. She was too young, now at least, to know what that was, or meant. Her train of thought was abruptly broken. Her bud snapped shut, watching closely as Arwen began to take off the necklace. Her tiny, beady eyes followed the necklace as it moved. It was sitting in Arwen's hand now. Rattling in a way that appealed to the plant. Her mind went over ways she could end up with both things in her possession. An idea popped into her mind.

"Mmmm okay!" Jasmedai decided. She withdrew the box from her coils, keeping it within view. She slowly extended a vine for the necklace in Arwen's hand. "Give me necklace first? You can trust Jas to give it back."

The intent was dubious. But Jasmedai's eyes were innocent, and her coils curled into themselves in slow loops. Looking as innocent as possible. Yet there was a twinkle of mischief in her eyes, a certain impatience to her loops, and if Arwen were observant enough she'd notice.

Arwen sighed, "No no, you are not food because you eat the food. You are an eater, not food."

She looked down at the necklace and then at the box, weighing the pros and cons. She finally held out the necklace, waiting for Jasmedai's vines to come closer before pulling it away.

"Hm... I've an idea," she said, waving the necklace back and forth, "We give them over at the same time."

She bunched the necklace up and prepared to throw it, her eyes on the box, "And then I'll give back the box when I'm finished with it."

She just wanted to look... to see...

"One... two... throw it," she said, and tossed her necklace towards the plant, holding her hands out to catch the box.

Suddenly she felt regret. That was her necklace, the one she'd spent time over to represent every loved one she had! Why did she throw it?!

Jasmedai was satisfied. She wasn't food! "Eater," she repeated. Jasmedai watched, but didn't speak, as Arwen held out the necklace. Jasmedai's eyes got big. She slunk forward, reaching out a vine to touch it. And then it was yanked away. Her bud frowned. And then, she cocked her bud. "Jas can give the box." She made sure the box was in sight. But she hadn't been intending to throw her box. She laughed, child-like and mischievous when Arwen tossed her necklace. "You did it!" She said.

But Jasmedai was still baby. Inexperienced. And a little stupid. The jangling of the necklace hitting the ground had her attention immediately. Her eyes were beady with greed. She dropped the box carelessly, forgetting about it for the moment. She slithered over to necklace.

She picked it up, poking it with her vines. She shook it. It made a dull clunking noise. Jasmedai cooed, reveling in the strange new noise. She shook it again. The box was all for the taking, the brief fall tearing apart the already rotting box. But Jasmedai had forgotten it in her excitement for the New Thing.
