Confinement, that's the first thing that he remembers, not being able to move, stuck in a single place. After a few attempts of moving around in the confining space he finally gave up and gave in to the fact that he wasn't going anywhere soon. His next memory is of sounds, sometimes very close and sometimes very far away like the distant rumbling of thunder. There never seemed to be any quiet and it was almost more maddening than not being able to move. Finally, he recognized the light, it was hardly present and would occasionally go out or be filled with strange shapes that moved and danced around his prison but it was there and as little as it was it seemed comforting. It was the light that seemed to whisper to him of greater possibilities and grave dangers, it consumed all his thoughts and he wanted more.
About halfway up the trench a fist-sized lightning ridge black opal shuddered violently and tumbled into the the ferns and moss at the bottom of the trench. It continued to shudder violently for several long minutes before again growing calm. Umber had grown exhausted with the effort of attempting an escape from the confining whatever it was that was keeping him from the light. Umber had found just enough room to get some momentum behind his beak and had been relentlessly slamming the smooth sided prison he seemed doomed to remain in his entire life. The urge to try again burned hot within him but Umber resisted, he had used too much energy and lay still as he rested.

Eve was only mildly upset. Most of the anger and sadness she felt when her family got hurt had washed away. The hot, white fire in her chest had now cooled down to just a soft throbbing deep within her rib cage. For now, she wanted to be alone - perhaps spend time with those who weren't wounded, like Krakarak or Giggle- Eos, maybe even--

THRACK!

With a sharp squawk, the tiny crow had slammed into a tree. If she actually weighed anything, she might have left a mark or even shook the entire tree itself, but such a thing didn't happen. In a way, she felt entirely useless and this was only made worse by the way the tree simply wasn't threatened by her; even though it got in her way.

She hobbled down onto a branch and looked down below, noticing a near-black chrysalis at the bottom of the tree. A child? Perhaps. The last child she met was deaf, but he was happy and sang all the time. The crow didn't even think as she flew down to the bottom of the tree and began pecking at the stone gem.

She continued to peck until it cracked somewhat, and then and only then did the crow realise 'perhaps this isn't the best idea.' She stepped back and waited, the tiny bird waiting for the creature inside to come out on it's own.

(OOC So sorry for the super late reply, been at work all day :S)

Umber was so tired, he'd done a lot more than he had realized but he needed to get out! The light's whisper from before had become a shriek in his mind, commanding him to break free and all his willpower had been consumed in it's call.

Just as Umber was ready to begin attacking his prison again he noticed another shadow come in front of the light, this one was slightly more defined than the others and there was something.......familiar about it's shape. Umber felt like he should recognize what he was seeing but he just couldn't put his talon on it. In the middle of his thoughts his prison was suddenly wracked with a constant sharp jerk backward, Umber barely had time to adjust to what was going on when he heard a sharp cracking noise. Suddenly, what once was murky blue darkness now blazed with clear bright light and Umber's unaccustomed eyes burned painfully with the exposure like a hot needle being pressed to the back of his eyes.

Umber froze for a couple minutes, the bright light overloading everything else. Shortly, after regaining himself, he started attacking the newly made crack with a vengeance and began to widen it. The little rest that he had couldn't sustain the level of ferocity he was now hurling against the crack, almost as soon as he had started he had to stop again but he was out!

Umber's feet still resided within the beautiful blue chrysalis but, from about his midsection up, Umber was free! Umber's body was covered in sparse, spiny feathers, not the soft down of most birds and his head was large and difficult to keep from crashing to the cave floor. Umber's eyes were as black as night, much blacker than his body which appeared more gray than black. At first everything was so bright that Umber could hardly keep his eyes open so he lay on his side breathing deeply. Gradually everything began to darken slightly as his eyes adjusted to the light and he began to make out blurry shapes around him, most prominently that shadow he felt was familiar to him.

"Mommy", it came out short and quick like a cough, "Mommy? Mommy?" Now why did i say that? Umber thought, he'd never heard that sound before or seen that blurry shadow before but his reaction seemed natural and felt right. As he pondered the shadow and his reaction to it, his beak came into focus and all thoughts left his mind. His beak was beautiful! It was smooth as polished glass, the edges were slightly clear and the center stained black and blue like a storm caught inside his beak. I've never seen anything so beautiful

(I'M REALLY SORRY I DIDN'T NOTICE YOU ANSWERED UNTIL NOW please could you tag @Eve the next time you do? :o)

The crow chirped quietly to herself, tilting her head. She hadn't heard such a word - 'mommy.' Her mind briefly flashed back to the onyx gem lying at the base of her tree and the crow shuddered gently, before she glanced down at the newborn corvid.

"... Food. Food," she chirped quietly, more to herself. Eve looked left, and then she looked right, squabbling to herself briefly before she hobbled quickly off, digging up dirt and moss until she plucked out a worm - not moving too far away from Umber.

The crow half-flapped, half-ran her way back and offered the worm out to the little raven.

@Umber
