Thomas stood lonesome beside various plants. He knew little about Eridanus, other than it was full of life, plants and various other biotic beings. He was captivated by it's mysteries, and he wanted to know more. Why do so many plants grow here? he thought. Do they possess magicka of some kind? Thomas started to pace around a cluster of ferns and fungi. It took him quite a few strides to complete a full loop around the life forms. "Magic," Thomas said to himself in a huff. "What a complicated thing."

Thomas took six long steps away from the cluster and turned back towards it. "I'm going to give this a try," he said; seemingly to the plants. He looked down at a small plant resembling a fern that sat lonesome at his feet. The young elk took a deep breath, lowered his maw to the leaf, and closed his eyes. He could feel an intense heat coming from his nose. As each second passed, he could feel the heat more and more. Thomas was not giving up this time, though. He was prepared for the consequences, and he wanted his magic to work for once.

Within ten seconds or so, Thomas opened his eyes back up. The plant was now replaced with a heaping pile of ash and smoke. The calf stepped back in excitement and raised his head high. "Finally! he shouted loud enough for anyone nearby to hear. He was so thrilled with himself that he temporarily forgot about the burning sensation that still ached his nose. Ow!

There were some parts of Tukluk that were still tired after his Magical Exhaustion some few weeks ago. He’d never pushed himself that hard, and never planned to do so again — unless, of course, someone set Eridanus on fire again. Then he’d have to. Garmer, the kyte he was Bonded to, growled softly at the thought. I had to carry you back to the Tree in my talons, you idiot. Do me a favor and don’t pass out like that ever again. Trying to land with you in my claws was a pain.

I didn’t ask you to bring me back, Tuck argued, as he hopped through the trees.

What, was I supposed leave you there?

You could have.

Clearly you still don’t understand the point of Bonding to me. There’s no way I would have left you there like that for any manner of creature to come and find you and eat you while you were unconscious.

Then don’t complain that you had to carry me back. I don’t even weigh a pound.

The two of them would have gone on complaining like that possibly forever if not for the sound of someone speaking down below. Tuck looked down at the ground, trying to squint through the darkness. Hopping through trees without light was bad enough, but he was used to that by now. It was in his DNA to hop from one tree to the next. It was not in his DNA to have excellent night vision. But when there was a sudden spark, then a flame, and the faint smell of smoke, Tuck instantly saw red and damn near fell out of the tree he was clinging to in order to reach the ground faster.

Without thinking, he made a ball of bright yellow-gold light above his head, and shot it forward through the ferns to find the source of the fire. “Hey!” he shouted, seeing the shadowy shape of a Gembound up ahead. “What the hell do you think you’re doing, setting my forest on fire? Are you the one who caused the fire around the Monarch? Cos if you are, I’m gonna wring your stupid neck!”

"Speech looks like this."
"Thoughts looks like this."
This is Garmer.

Thomas was thrilled at his success. He jumped around a couple of times before looking down at the pile of ash. "After all that practice and hard work I can finally control it," he said to himself. He was so captivated by his achievement that he nearly flew a couple feet in the air. He was startled by a flying ball of light that seemingly headed straight for him. Panicked, Thomas took a few long strides to the side and stared up into the trees. His eyes darted from left to right as he tried to figure out where the illumination had come from. But, because of the darkness, he couldn't see much at all.

The elk was grasped by a shout of words. He turned his head towards the noise and pointed his ears forwards. Thomas became more relaxed because now he knew that the light came from a fellow gembound, but he still remained tense. More of the tension was relieved when the young elk became overwhelmed with confusion. "Your forest?" Thomas started. "I'm sorry, strange voice from the trees, I did not realize this was your forest. And I certainly didn't start a fire around the, er," Thomas began to stutter. What's it called again? he thought. After a few brief moments of silence he recalled the name. "Ah, yes! The Monarch!"

"I don't even know what this cave is called, voice. I have never been here before, but I am sorry about this fern. I won't do it again in here." Thomas was trying to sound as sincere as possible. He didn't want the strange voice to start attacking him, especially when he couldn't even see who was speaking.

The horrible creature that had just set fire to Eridanus was… was only a child, which Tuck could tell from the sound of the voice which had not yet dropped from maturity. He saw the sideways movement of the child and tried to reposition the light over the child’s head. Clearly, the Gemling hadn’t been around long, for he didn’t even know the name of the Cave. Or, maybe he just didn’t know the name of this room in the Cave? Tuck couldn’t tell, so he just decided to give him both names. With an annoyed, but halfway patient sigh, he said, “The Cave itself is called Origin Cave, though I barely ever hear anyone call it that. Most Gembounds just call it the Cave. And this particular room is called Eridanus.”

Tuck flicked his gaze up at the orb of light, and it moved soundlessly back towards him, coming to a stop over his body, and the body of Garmer who was mostly encased in shadow, for he was hiding himself a little bit. Hoping that Gemling could now see him, he said, “And I’m Tuck.” He hesitated, then pursed his lips for a moment and said, “Sorry for yelling at you. I just… something bad happened in this room not too long ago, and I nearly killed myself trying to fix it. And then you set a little plant on fire and I kind of freaked out. Don’t… don’t do Fire Magic in places with lots of vegetation, okay? You might end up burning down people’s homes or really hurting yourself or someone else. Just… Fire is really dangerous and scary and… Yeah.”

The marmoset was more upset than he had previously realized. Just the thought of fire now made him feel a mixture of horrible emotions, and he hadn’t even been in the fire. Still, the aftermath had been very traumatizing and he was not looking forward to seeing the Scar around the Monarch when the lights came back on… if the lights came back on.

Thomas watched as the ball of light danced around him. He realized that it wasn't there to harm him, but simply to light the area. He could only see the outline of the gembound talking to him; whatever it was, it was relatively small and seemed to pose no thread. Well, except for it's magic of course. "I never knew it was called Origin Cave. I thought it was only known as the Cave," he replied. "And I had no idea this room was called Eridanus." Thomas continued to try and observe the creature the best he could, but it was just too darn dark.

And then the small orb of light traveled back towards it's caster. It was then Thomas knew he was speaking to a small monkey of sorts. He no longer had fear of it attacking him physically, but he continued to worry about magic. He knew so little about it, and he knew that anyone in the cave could posses any level of magical abilities. The idea of the monkey being powerful scared the elk, but he hid his feeling.

"I'm Thomas." The young elk lowered his front leg and dipped his head to the gembound known as Tuck. He was bowing in greeting; a formal thing Thomas did with everyone he introduced himself too. He stood back up and nodded along with the monkeys words.

"I never really thought of that before," he said, referencing how dangerous fire was in a place like Eridanus. "I guess I never really considered how harmful fire is to plants, or how quickly it could ruin a cave like Eridanus. I won't do it ever again in here, unless it helps out in some way." Thomas nodded heavily with a firm gaze at Tuck. "Which it probably won't," he added with a more relaxed, humorous tone.

Thomas looked up at the monkey before wandering his eyes elsewhere. "I best be going my own way. There is much that I must do."

He began to head in another direction, head down and eyes staring straight.
