Nothing had happened. It was disappointing, and that disappointment was painted garishly across the piglet's little face; not only did their big dark eyes shine with a glossy layer of fresh tears, but their little ears slicked back across their head, their shoulders drew together and their whole body - that pathetically small body with its lovely little stripes - began to quake.
Lithos grit their teeth as they fought against the onslaught of sobs, clutching them in a constricting throat as they tried to stop themselves from emoting. Children often felt oversimplified but intense reactions to things; everything was new, so of course everything was too much to handle. Grape-sized beads of salty tears bubbled up and rain unhindered over his little cheeks. He felt the dampness on the underside of his chin - and the sogginess of mucus dripping from his flat little nose.
He collapsed rear-end-first upon the dirt in that moment, and let out a shrieking wail.

Fairy voiced what she was thinking, Comet knew she had a spell like that herself. One that allowed her to sense water. But if the piglet's spell really had been a sensing spell they would be able to tell that it worked, right?
The disappoint was clear on their face, and she watched their ears fold back and their body start to shake. This was not good, what to do? What should she say? The tears poured down their cheeks, and they sat down and started wailing. Comet ran over and curled her tail around him. "It's okay, not everyone gets it on their first try."

She was sure that the piglet was going to describe the feeling of something, some kind of sense or maybe a surge of energy, that he was going to look at her with sparkling eyes while describing his first magical experience, but she didn't expect him to suddenly fold back their ears and start to shake.
"Oh, little sweetheart," she started and then gasped when he suddenly collapsed and started to wail. She fumbled over, one leg raising to try and touch at Lithos comfortingly, although she wasn't sure if he wanted to be touched. He hadn't seemed to like it last time. "Oh, sweetheart, don't cry! It's alright, you're fine! Magic doesn't always work and sometimes it's hard to see! And if you don't have any magic, then it's okay, you're still you! You're still wonderful, okay, sweetie?" She pawed a little awkwardly with a leg really not made to hug.

He wanted to see the pretty colors that had drawn him here. He wanted to be able to channel that energy and summon the rainbows, but all that Lithos got was the overwhelming feeling of pressure in his head and then nothing.
The newborn's wails continued even as both of the adults tried to assuage his pain, and soon enough he is not screeching and howling in defeat, but the tears are still beading up and falling from his eyes. He snorts a few piggish inhalations and swallows the wad of phlegm at the back of his throat.
The wolf sounded pretty convinced that he was magic-free. The leggy pink thing was trying so hard to calm the tumult of his storming sobs, and their soothing voice was a little bit more effective, however Lithos was convinced he had done something wrong. That he needed to try harder.
He sucks in a shuddering breath and shakes his head, recoiling from the reaching twig-arm offered by Fairy. He snaps at it defensively, his teeth clicking, but regrets that action too - crowing with words this time while a fresh wail punctuates between the words: "Buh -- I wanna be magic too, I wanna make pretty lights an' -- an' you said I jus' wishy, buh the wis-- snfff -- the wishy!! I did the wishy and -- it hurt!"
The explanation was messy. Whether the adults could parse the meaning from his sobbing or not, Lithos fell to crying quietly where he sat and gradually the tumult subsided - but he was glowering at the both of them as if he'd been struck; they had lied to him!

Was it something she had said? Had she done something wrong? Maybe so, since now the piglet was crying even harder than before. Why did she have to be so bad at this! She never knew the right things to say when she needed it the most.
The piglet's sobs turned into a glower. Which was somehow worse than crying. She would need to help him cast a spell! Yes! That was the solution to the problem. "Sometimes other spells are more helpful than lights. Maybe you have a spell like that. Sometimes you do not know if it worked or not because you do not know what the spell is." Comet thought back to the many times she did something without knowing what it was intended to do. "Try it again. If you feel a little different than normal it might mean it worked."

She quickly pulled her leg back when Lithos snapped at it, deciding that okay he didn't want to be touched, she should probably stop that. Her antennae continued to wave, a little hesitantly, as if she didn't know what to do. She was getting a little distressed herself, not sure how to handle this situation, since the piglet seemed to be angry with them, but Fairy wasn't sure why.
Still she put on a brave face for him and continued to reassure him. "I know, I know, maybe it just didn't work! Magic doesn't always work for me either and sometimes it takes practice! I didn't know how to make rainbows until fairly recently so it's okay if your magic isn't perfect right away!" She cooed again, wishing she could do something reassuring, like touching him or letting off a gentle glow, but he'd already reacted bad to her touch and now didn't seem like a good time to be displaying magic.
She was suddenly concerned however, the movement of her antennae stopping for a moment. "What do you mean it hurt? What happened?"

The tears slowly came to an end but he was left huffing and puffing, his heart hammering in his little chest. It felt like his skin was crawling with ants. The wolf tried to speak to him and there were too many words for the child's worked-up state to handle; but then Fairy tried to calm him down, and he shook his head to her explanation of maybe it didn't work; it had worked, he had felt something! It had hurt! They made him to that on purpose!
"What do you mean, it hurt?" she asked. "What happened?"
The piglet snorts and stamps at the ground, gouging it with his tiny cloven toes. "Iunno it just -- hurted. Like... Like I couldn't breathe, but only in my head, and it pounded!" He snorts again, this time affixing his gaze upon the giant bug and glowering at them; but he tries to focus his energy again, his one good eye filled with a sense of betrayal while the other - his stone - fluoresced green with the effort.
The pressure built and -- this time, there wasn't a sense of pain; this time the glow rose in his eye and then fizzled out pathetically, and Lithos' scowl deepend.

Comet listened to the piglet's description very carefully, trying to think of what could have been causing the pain in their head. From the information given, she guessed that it was probably a sensing spell that worked. If you didn't know what you were doing, it was weird to be able to sense things that you normally couldn't. The piglet probably passed it off as a headache.
She watched the piglet strain again, probably trying to cast the spell. But nothing happened, and they only seemed to get more angry. "Maybe you should take a break?" offered Comet. She knew it was tiring to cast spells. "Maybe after that you will feel better."

Fairy didn't know what to do. She thought she'd be good with children, but it seemed that Lithos was only getting more and more upset. "Oh, dear, I'm sorry. I don't know if we have the same kind of magic so I don't know how to help you. But I believe in you, sweetheart! I know you can do it! No matter what it is, your magic is wonderful and beautiful and you can do incredible things with it if you want! You can do anything you want!" She wanted oh she really wanted to reach forward and touch the little pig, caress him softly and tell him it would be okay, give him a hug for support, but...she kept her distance. Not everyone was as touchy-feely as her and not everyone appreciated a nice hug.
She glanced at Comet before nodding her head. "Yes, yes breaks always help. Some food and rest do wonders for magic, you wouldn't believe! Would you like me to grow you some grass to eat?" She wasn't sure if Lithos ate grass, or if he would appreciate a show of magic so...safer to ask first.
