DOVEFEATHER let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find
There was a flash of a smile as the kitten looked forward down the path, trotting along ahead.
"The All Mother does these things for a reason, you know. She would only do such a thing if she believed you brave and strong enough to carry on despite it."
Her words came with easy confidence, her tail waving behind her slowly as though a branch in the wind.
"There are many things to learn from the struggles of life."
"You see, Brother, I am not the best Seer yet-- but if I had to guess, I'm sure Mother made your leg weak for a reason. Perhaps to get you to slow down, to appreciate things around you with time. Or to make you more dependent on something or someone, as the All Mother makes me dependent on my Sisters."
She did not look back at him as she considered, staring forward, hoping for a sign.
"Or perhaps, Mother wishes for you to understand that you are more than the weakness of your eye and your paw. Perhaps Mother Sees that you are unsure of yourself, and so puts you through these Trials so that you may grow stronger-- like a tree struck in half by lightning--"
She paused, curious, head tilting towards a tree that looked as though it had indeed been hit by lightning. It was strange. She had never seen or heard of storms or rain, so how had this happened?
"--... But like a tree, you will regrow to be Stronger than ever, down this new path Mother sees for you."
She diverted from her path and hopped up the ledge, clawing her way up the dirty, clumpy cliff to reach the top. She stopped for a moment to look down at Booker, as if waiting to see if he could follow or if he needed her help.

Although "brave" and "strong" were not words Booker had ever equated with himself, the numbat listened intently anyway, the kitten's confident words warming his heart. "Well, ah s'pose that makes sense. She has a plan for everythin', I think. From the tiniest things to the biggest things." The words were murmured and contemplative, as Booker slowed his gait, nosing at a tiny sprout that had made its way up through the soil. "Everythin', even us, starts from nothin'. She gives us purpose. Like this lil plant," he explained, huffing out an experimental breath, smiling when the green growth wavered. "I have two purr-poses, now." Though he didn't elaborate on what they were, Booker flashed the girl a soft, almost thankful smile, speeding up to match her walk once again.
"Trials," he repeated, pondering the odd cat's words. "Ta prove m'self?" Growing stronger certainly sounded promising, but it also sent a creeping fear up his spine. Strength could be misused - perhaps the Mother meant for him to grow stronger in another way? Booker stowed the thought away for later, relaxing once again. Whatever the case may be, the kitten's words were a comfort, soothing his battered soul, if only for today. When she reached the cliff and began to climb, the scribe followed slowly, awkwardly using three limbs to pull himself up, scrabbling for purchase a few times, finally arriving at the top with a satisfied grunt.
"Thank you, little one," he replied with a tiny grin, panting, blood singing through his veins. For the first time in weeks, Booker had something he had thought was gone completely: hope. "Dunno how or when your words will come true, but I believe in 'em." He barked out a short laugh, playfully darting forward to groom a stripe up one of the cat's fluffy, whisker-adorned cheeks. "Seems like you're well on your way ta becomin' a great Seer."

DOVEFEATHER let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find
Dovefeather flashed a smile, her semi-transparent teeth glinting in the false sunlight. She waited there for him to climb up, watching him with curious and (perhaps almost menacing) pale flaxen eyes, her tail brushing against her curly, muddied fur.
"Especially even the little plant. Without life, there would be no children for the All Mother to guide, and the largest of life needs the smallest of life to survive. Mice eat the plants, we eat the mice, fungi eat us when we die."
He had finally reached the top and her mumbling stumbled off, replaced by thousands of bees, when he thanked her and-- abruptly-- came forward to groom her cheek.
A soft giggle spilled from her maw, ducking her head down to his height. She brushed her tongue along his crusty fur, seemingly unmindful of the smell or even the taste.
"Yep-yep, I hope so. All it takes is practice, I think. All Mother will guide me I'm sure."
She made sure his ear was as spotless as the day he was born before backing off to trot off towards the split tree.
"Now let's see about finding me a sign, shall we? This tree's probably got a clue, yeah?"
