After a few minutes of searching, Alan came upon a small crevice in the wall. It would probably do. However, when he poked his head in, he gasped at how much space there was. He couldn't see very well, but from the way the air changed, he could tell that, while it was significantly smaller the Polaris, of course, it was still spacious.

Deciding that he first needed a light, he felt his way to the wall of the cave and poked around until his beak hit something that felt like a gem. Perfect. He concentrated his magic and focused it forward. Unfortunately, no magic came to him. Disappointed, he stepped back. There was a flash of light from the storm outside, which briefly illuminated a small sliver of the cave, including the gem in front of him. He was shocked. It was huge! A huge quartz crystal jutted out from the side of the wall. If he could successfully bauble the crystal, his cave would be beautifully lit!

Alan focused again, trying to project his light magic into the crystal before him. He felt...something activate, and a sigh of relief went through him as a successful spell flowed into the crystal. However, when he opened his eyes, the light was time and flickering. Disappointed, he forced himself not to look at the rest of the cave. He was going to do this right. Only when this crystal was glowing bright would he settle himself down.

Once again, Alan pressed himself against the crystal, closing his eyes as he tried to will his magic forth. He was focusing so intensely that his head was starting to spin. However, this time the magic didn't come to him. The weak magic he had been able to get into the quartz had gone out by now. Angry, he stepped back and sat down, slightly dizzy from the effort. Why couldn't he get this right?

He didn't know if he should wait before trying to bauble the crystal again. Unfortunately, he was getting impatient and the rest he gave himself was obviously not enough. As he tried to focus the magic to get it to light, nothing happened and he just ended up staggering away, all the effort he was putting into this starting to wear him out. He took a deep breath to try and calm the anger that was threatening to surface.

This time, Alan took some time to rest before trying again. He focused on the magic he felt swirling within him, he let his conscious fall into it, let it fill him up until he felt light and energized again. He stood and pressed his head against the side of the crystal and simply allowed the magic to flow between them. He didn't even have to look to know that it had worked, but he did anyways because he wanted to see the cave.

He gasped at the sight. The cave was definitely quite spacious, but there were also all varieties of crystals and gems gleaming from the cave walls and from a few spots on the floor. It was quite a sight. I'll have to make the other crystals glow too. In all different colors. It will be a rainbow in here!

As Alan happily observed his new little home, he realized that he didn't actually have a place to sleep. Of course, he could sleep on the ground, but he wasn't sure it was going to be very comfortable. So he turned and exited through the crevice and started searching for some bedding.

The first thing he thought of was moss. That would be the easiest and the most accessible. The river was not far and there was sure to be some mosses on the rocks. Sure enough, as he approached the river, he spotted some light colored mosses growing along the shore. It wasn't much, but it would do. He scraped it off and squeezed out as much water as he could before heading back. He glanced up at the storm every so often, the image of the shattering bauble still etched in his mind.

Once he was back in his cave, he shifted the magic in the crystal so that the glow was less so he could sleep. He set the moss into a small nest shape and settled down. It was moderately comfy. He reached back and pulled out the glowing shard and set it down in front of him, admiring it fondly. Now he had a start. A start to what? He didn't know. But it was a start. With these happy thoughts, he drifted off to sleep, content.
