Karma sighed, satisfied, even as she felt his mind drift away. She became more aware of a dull, throbbing pain at the base of her antler, imploring her to reduce her use of magic. Thus, when he suggested that they stop, she happily agreed, though she would have never admitted her weariness otherwise. She caught few words that mattered to her much at this moment, caught between a blissful sort of satisfaction and weariness tugging at her.

Even the frustration in communication did not dampen her mood, and as he mimed a nest, she nodded, turned, and began poking around in the underbrush for somewhere suitable. Suddenly aware of how patient the white fawn was, she stopped and turned back to him, working hard to remember how to form the sounds. “Thank… you,” she said softly, hoping he understood that it was for much more than today’s conversation. A thought briefly crossed her mind about how she might have fared if a different creature had found her as she’d hatched, and turned away from him to hide the worry visible on her face.

Pride watched Karma, a sort of gently good-natured warmth briefly touching him.

"You're welcome," he answered simply. As she turned from him to settle in a nest of leaves, he turned away, himself--back to the water. There was a sound of quiet hoofbeats on damp earth and crunching foliage as he moved to peer back in.

What had Karma seen..?

Curiously, he watched for a time--but saw nothing. Eventually giving up, he drank his fill and set about browsing; one he was tired, he would rest by her side. Until then, he found that hunger still prompted him... though he cast glances her way now and again, ensuring that she rested safe.
