Yes, there was pity in him for Maximus. There was regret, though not very strong; he'd given it every chance and mercy he was capable of providing. And right now those feelings were far from his mind, stirred up in the mud of annoyance at its repeated aggressions and failures.

He studied it, for a moment. It was afraid of him, despite the fact that he'd done nothing to deserve that fear; it was proof enough that nothing he could have done would have stopped the moron's opinions of him from twisting the way they had. Maximus wanted and would accept no gift other than those which they, themselves, had asked for; it was spoiled, that way.

He simply didn't care anymore, and once it was in its stone, he first covered it in leaves to hide it and then he stepped away. He made a mental note to have the Sentinel look after the chrysalis. At least, the bare minimum required that Maximus didn't get eaten in its sleep, or something.
