Blackberry understood why Xervas only gave his name. She had just instructed her child to beat him up and he certainly had done so. But still, there was still hope left. Perhaps. He had a good spirit, she saw that. He just needed a direction. A direction that her family could give him. They would benefit with him in their ranks. She glanced at Huckleberry. "Yes, Papa can fix him right up. He's done for me plenty of times. Xervas," She turned her attention away from he child and leaned down towards the bird. "I am Blackberry. I mean you no harm, at least not anymore. You are a fighter, you held back my child well. Come with me, Xervas. We will not attack you anymore and we will train you to fight and live with the family, live with purpose."
She glanced towards Huckleberry again and realized that her proposition was probably not a good one with her insane child dancing around the side of the bird. "There is more then just Huckleberry in my family. I have two other blood children and two that I have welcomed from the caves, like I would with you. You would have a good place in our family. We protect each other, fight for each other, live for each other. What do you say?"

How was one supposed to respond to that? There was Huckleberry, who was prancing around him, who had just licked his face. That brought on a surge of confusion. He suspected, for sure, that perhaps they were not... all there.
Then, there was Blackberry. Who was now a bit friendly, though Xervas still didn't trust her. While he was worried that, perhaps, the other bird would attack him, he did not say such a thing. "I would like to stay here," he responded. Xervas stared up at Blackberry, who was taller than him. So much taller, it seemed, to the scared bird.
"Speech."

Blackberry narrowed her eyes. That was too bad. The child would have made a good member of the family. He would have been strong, a good protector. Or at least a good fighter. She thought that Mulberry would have liked him. But it wasn't to be. She wouldn't force the bird to join her family - that would only endanger the other children and create too much tension. No, she would leave him here and forget.
"Okay, then. We shall leave you here." She glanced over its injuries, paying no heed, and then turned around, brushing her tail over Huckleberry. "Come, Huckleberry. We'll have Blueberry look over that wound on your foot." As she walked out of Polaris with her child trailing behind her, she quickly put behind the thin disappointment in favor of apathy. He was just another member of the caves. He would not be shown her mercy again.

Huckleberry was surprised, somewhere inside, at Mama's offer to Xervas. He thought that they were they to fight the thing and play! not offer to join the family. Huckleberry wasn't sure how he would think about having the bird as his brother, so he expressed that physically by crouching down in front of the bird, like a playful dog, and hopping around, curiously. Would he like another brother? Maybe. If it was nice to him! And the other siblings too. Protect family!
But, of course it would decline and Huckleberry gave it a smile. "Okay! Bye!" Good, now he didn't have to worry about having to adapt to having a new member of the family. He stood there, staring strangely at the bird, still wondering what it would have been like, but he was jerked out of his thoughts by his mother's voice. He giggled as he hopped after her, not really noticing the pain in his foot. He raced ahead of her, eager to get home and tell his siblings about his victory!

Xervas watched Blackberry, who looked him over once. They were leaving him here? He felt an extreme, undeniable relief that he wasn't going to be attacked a second time. And then they left him there.
Huckleberry was certainly odd. He watched the hybrid go before turning away, slowly heading his own way. Unlike Huckleberry, he was aware of every bruise.
