The anteater clawed and bit at the skrungler underneath, but nothing could stop the transformation - the great feathered wings ripping open like a wound, the wicked beak sprouting from its jaws, teeth fusing...

The vulture glared back, and made for eyes with a hooked claw. He knew what would happen next.

He pulled back, ice in his veins, shocking him from the offense and willing him to run.

K'cil made an attempt to get away and Friend pelted right after. It was hungry, and its prey wasn't going to get away now. It lunged again, aiming for the back of the neck where it'd been latched in before, but this time it wasn't aiming to just stay attached. Now, it was ripping at whatever it could in its jaws, looking for some vital artery or nerve that might make the anteater go still.

The anteater broke into a gallop, desperately trying to get away from the vulture flying overhead. But it was too large, too fast. He was nothing underneath it, and the dunes lapped hungrily at his feet, dragging him down...

Despite the way the world was warping, the teeth sinking back into his neck were the exact same. It might've sobered him, even. They tore through the raw meat, digging deeper than they'd done before. Looking for bone.

The anteater decided then, it was kill or be killed. He would not hold back, and he would not run. There was no point in it. He threw himself to the earth again, hoping the same trick would save him - maybe too late. There was a new spray of blood coming from his neck, bleeding at a horrid pace.

The anteater threw himself down, but this time Friend did not cry out or unlatch. Its jaws only bit in deeper, head arching back as it sought the delicious, hot, red insides of K'cil's nape.

It had to be over soon. It needed this form. It wasn't going to back out now, not until it'd digested the thing whole. Friend's jagged teeth moved to sink into the soft, scarlet heap spilling onto K'cil's neck.

The anteater could feel a strange weight in his limbs, a creeping feeling of cold. His sight was filled with iridescent flashes as the hallucinogens danced with the flickering neurons of his fading mind. The Spire, the taste of it.

He was not all gone. Some fight left still, as he willed his legs to kick blindly at Friend.

Friend was kicked. It, too, was bleeding and getting cold-- but all that would be resolved if it could just do this one last thing. If it could just eat. If made a last lunge for K'cil, moving to try and sink its teeth into his hind leg and crunch until he couldn't run anymore.

If it could just wait, surely he'd bleed out.

It was in front of him, that pillar of crystalline blue, infinite and eternal like the sky he'd never gotten to see. But there were teeth still nipping at his heels, desperate to keep him from fate.

He would not falter. He would continue, trying to outrun the predator still - even as it grabbed a hind leg and dragged him backward. Just a little further. Just a little further.

The limb slipped out of Friend's jaws and it shrieked in anger. He was getting away. The perfectly good meal was getting away!

It made a final lunge for K'cil's back again, determined not to let it get away.

The chrysalis failed to take in time.

Something vital, irreplaceable, was either taken or destroyed- he couldn't tell anymore - from the ragged wound in his neck. The anteater's legs gave out from under him, falling in slow motion as the communication between his mind and body ceased. He was falling away from himself.

He could see The Spire getting closer still, it was coming to him. The pillar raced toward him, grinding against stone and sand in a mighty roar that began to fill his ears. In anticipation, his thin tongue began to worm its way from his mouth, reaching out to it. He would taste the rainbow once more...

He ended up tasting Friend instead. Then he was gone.

He was the rainbow now. Could he taste himself?
