#1 Magdalena

Tentatively paws crept across the tunnel's floor, carrying her through an area that was considerably unfamiliar to her. Unseeing maize eyes gazed down towards the stone path, as if she would be so lucky to see just where exactly she was going. It wasn't a normal thing for her to venture out of the areas she was far more familiar with and what even had possessed her to come out here in the first place was beyond her. A cold chill filled the tunnel, sweeping over her and causing her gangly form to tremble. Everything in her mind screamed for her to turn around, to leave instantly before the cold biting breeze could cause her any harm, but there was just something that called to her.

The sensation urged her further and further, blurring out any reason the borzoi would have against going in such a direction. Yet, even as her instincts attempted to turn her around and lead her home, it was ignored as folded ears twitched and pushed forward. The sound was feigns, alluring in its wistful tune. Her eyes shifted, turning in the direction she had thought the sound had come from. Her magic stirred, the familiar sensation coming to life as she attempted to send out her bacteria to try and get a better reading of this area, but to no avail did it work and Magdelena was left to travel towards the sound blindly.

For a moment she was frozen to her spot, swallowing thickly as an anxiety began to well up in the pit of her stomach. She wanted to turn tail and leave, to flee away from the place and never return. Alas, that faint sound continued to grasp at her like curling fingers luring her down the path. One shivering par after the other, Magdelena moved closer and closer towards the sound. Yet no matter how far she walked, how much closer she thought she was getting, the sound never grew. It remained in its wistful whisper. It was nothing she had ever heard before and the longer she heard it, the more she wished to discover it, to infect it with her bacteria so that she may yet know just what it was.

Paws scraped and claws clicked against the gound, changing in tune as the stone slowly began to change the further she got. The change in the ground quickly made her slow her pace even further. With her magic not working in her favor she dreaded what may happen should she rush towards the sound. With only a few more steps, Magdelena felt her nose bump into a wall, causing her to panic for a small moment as she back pedaled away from it. Her nose curled to show sudden annoyance at the wall before she shook her shivering form to regain her bearings. Her head moved side to side, ears searching for the faint whispering once again. Confusion wrapped around her as she desperately began to move. The sound had vanished, leaving her with not even the smallest of sound.

Magdelena found the wall again, following along it in a much quicker pace than before. She tripped here and there, toes catching on rocks or small dips in the ground, but she carried on. Just as she was about to start running the sound suddenly returned, a bit louder than before. The words were unrecognizable. Gibberish and flowing in a way that rattled the borzoi, yet seemed to allure her onwards. She followed it to an entrance and she gave pause as the wistful whispering changed tube. Her head spun, causing her thoughts to become cloudy and soon her paws were moving on their own accord. Before she realized it she was on ice, starting to slip along the surface as she desperately tried to reach the noise. In one more step the whispering suddenly stopped and Magdelena froze in her spot. Her ears jumped to attention and she brought her head up quickly. Her heart raced against her chest as the anxious feeling began to pick at her mind.

That was it. Magdelena was done with this. She had to get out of there, she needed to leave as quickly as she could. She spun on her gangly legs and just as she was about to back trace her steps a loud noise crashed just in front of her. A startled cry left the borzoi as she back peddled. Hind paws slipped and with a sudden intake of air Magdelena fell, slipping down the decline of the icy tunnel. There was a sharp thud, the sound echoing in the now silent tunnel and for the longest moment nothing else was heard. Minutes ticked by before suddenly that soft wistful whispering returned, the strange tune just barely heard. The sound fell on unconscious ears...

#2 Baratheon

Ontken lay in dreaming, body curled ‘round itself as he snored lightly. At first his dreams were nothing but shapes and colors, and flashes of images, but soon they formed into something much more sinister. He twitched in his sleep, pawed at the air, snarled. His dreams had become nightmares…

Baratheon buried his claws into yet another innocent creature, as others around him fled, screaming in terror. He dipped down and lapped up the blood from the freshly-killed Gembound, grinning wickedly with eyes that burned red. Another creature attempted to run past him, but he lifted a massive paw and brought it down – crunch – on top of them. Another dead. So many more to go… He blasted another with a beam of energy, and their body went flying into a cave wall. He went to it and swallowed the body whole, then let out a massive roar that shook the foundations of the Cave.

Ontken awoke, eyes wide, breathing hard. He sat and up and looked around, expecting to see carnage surrounding him. But there was nothing, and no one. Silence reigned. He closed his eyes and tried to steady his breathing. He had been plagued by the nightmares for days, and he had no idea why. He was a happy Gembound! He didn’t want to hurt anyone! Why was his mind doing this to him? There was a pool of water nearby. Slowly, he got to his paws and lapped at the pool for some time, his throat suddenly dry.

He pulled away once his thirst was quenched, and caught his reflection in the rippling water. He stared down at himself sadly, very tired from lack of proper sleep, but too afraid to close his eyes. He did not understand. He’d never suffered nightmares before now. At least… he didn’t think he had. There was… some part of himself missing. Sometimes he tried to remember what it was, but every time he started to get the beginnings of a memory, it gave him a headache. He… He hadn’t been a bad Gembound, had he? He hadn’t… hurt anyone, had he?

At the onset of yet another headache, he lay down beside the pool and buried his face under his paws. Soon he was asleep again, passed out from exhaustion. And soon his dreams troubled him once more.

#3 Cancer

Coiled in sinuous black velvet at the base of the throne lay a shadow. The shadow was spotted, black on black, like the sun's rays shifting down through tree leaves in a play of light that left him a dappled ebony.

A tail twitched, abbreviated, cut short with a small splinter of exposed bone where there should have been thick rounded fur. Scars attested to a life hard-fought, to battles scraped through, won, and lost. And for all that he looked like a shadow-dappled king, he had never seen a sun, and his throne lay barren.

Hasira had been coming and going with his children, his slaves, but the cat called Cancer had barely taken notice. He had his own young to look after, and though the stag had claimed the throne, made it his home, Cancer had disregarded him. Hasira was beneath his notice. He had other things to tend to: well-hidden things, children hidden in the stones.

The black leopard lifted himself and padded over the grey rock, movement effortless despite the wounds, graceful and seething with hidden power. He leapt with a surge of muscle to the top of one of the worn stone fortresses, sniffing along its top, that broken tail twitching and curling behind him as he carried on.

There was no strange scent, no enemy, no friend. Bevy had not come to greet him today, and he felt oddly on edge. Like he was waiting for something. Like something was going to happen. Cancer padded along the tops of the shelters, peering down into the dark and musty cracks in the stone, whiskers brushing the walls as he squeezed through a narrow passage.

He wasn't sure why he was wandering. He supposed it was instinct; he was looking over his home, looking for prey, ensuring all was safe. And stretching his worn and recovering muscles, too.

Another leap, and he'd crossed a large open space, jumping from one rooftop to another. A pause, a baleful glance around, his black shape hidden in the darkness under a stone outcrop. Then he was moving on, a vanished shadow, slipping back into the pale light of the glittering quartz high above.

Leon and he had made some kind of peace. Amaria was... new, alive. Bevy had made her own peace with him. It was a strange feeling, not to have any enemies. Nothing to fight against, nothing to do. Well, except to prepare for Raheerah's return. He still planned to kill the dragon, to land the final blow, its throat under his claws. Only... he wasn't sure, now. With the young ones depending on him, with Amaria back by his side, should he risk it? For her sake, he wanted to. He wanted revenge. But if he died, where would that leave them? His impulse was to just say, "then I'll win." "Then I won't die." Grim reality told him how unlikely this was.

The sable cat paused, looking down over Orion, and out toward the dark and looming throne. Was he a king? Truly a king? What would a king do? Would a king fight for his people and risk leaving them alone? Or would a king know when to draw back, to shepherd them to safety?

Cancer remained silent, deep in thought, as he stalked down along the stone pathway. It was a conundrum, and it was not an easy one. The desire to protect those he loved led to a conflict within him: was it better to seek out and fight the enemy head-on, or to hide with his family... and to survive with them? To retreat for them, or to set an example, to make his mark, or die trying? He would fade either way--but what kind of legacy did he wish to leave?

The leopard turned and vanished back into the shadows between the shelters, and he knew that it would be as if he had never been there.

But that would not be how his story ended.

#4 Aza'zel

Being a father was incredibly difficult. Aza'zel had never gone trick or treating in his entire life, nor did he know it even existed... But by the Caves, it was a terrifying event. He was supposed to, in all of his radiant glory, let his children wander off to collect prizes from the random horrifying monsters that roamed the caves.

And not like the big teddy bears like Leon, no. The actual monsters. From what he had heard, there was a terrible swamp noodle that could swallow Kerberos whole in Cetus.

It was fairly obvious what the responsible father figure would do. He would simply keep his precious children close to home instead, safe and sound. There were other games going on, such as dressing up in costumes. Bones was quite the painter, and as long as...

The bird looked around, pausing in thought. His iron stained feathers ruffled, beak parted with a sharp gasp. Where had they gone? Behind him, the african wild dog who had been trying to paint him crimson made a grumpy bark, but it fell deaf even on his sharp avian ears. His blotched monochrome wings spread and he took off, leaving behind the skulls that had been decorated for the occasion.

Over his dead birb body would his daughters run off on the most dangerous day of the year.

Sharp golden eyes spotted movement bellow in the ridges of bones surrounding the heart of Canis. Diving down, he caught a glimpse of jet feathers disappearing into the chambers. With an indignant squawk, he waddled into the darkness. The air seemed colder than usual as he wandered into the maze of rooms, looking around and jumping at every sudden noise.

Before he could call out the names of his children, a sharp noise hit his ears.

"KRAAAAK!"

The bird stared as the crow popped out behind a wall, screeching his eardrums out. Little did he know that Krakarak was a decoy-- and his daughters were miles away meeting a more responsible, loving dad figure-- a precious deer who would make sure no one hurt them.

Aza'zel was still hella salty though.

#5 Giggle

The hyena woke up from her slumber with a start, her ragged breath harsh in her ears, her pulse dancing a tune in her throat. She had dreamed of shadows, horrible shadow things that looked like her....things that had her face. Giggle wanted to shake it off, forget and cast off the nightmare like the layer of dust and grime that it felt like in her mind, but it stayed with her, stubborn. She grimaced and rose from her den of bones, her fur on edge.

The dream felt like it had warned of terrible things to come, but the details were too foggy, like a voice calling through the mists of Cetus. She walked over to her pile of bones, hoping for clarity, for something to clear this uneasiness she felt in the pit of her stomach.

"Show me.....show me..."

She looked carefully at the pile, seeing the remnants of the last fortune she had told and listlessly stirred them, moving them around with no rhyme or reason. She did so, pacing around the pile, moving some here and there like a horrible potion in her cauldron, and she could almost imagine the hissing and bubbling as she did so. She hardly noticed the grin on her face, more of a motion of baring teeth than one of glee.

From the pile she grabbed a long, half-burnt femur and clambered onto a nearby boulder, tossing it in, imagining the wet bluip as the cauldron sucked the bone under, moving some of the smaller ones away. From her high vantage point on the boulder she could see the new shapes forming, whispering to her, but it wasn't enough.

Again and again she took bones from the pile and threw them in, big ones, small ones, some as big as her head, watching them move others around, vertebrae and finger bones splashing half-haphazardly. It was only then that she clambered down from her perch and circled the pile. She wasn't grinning now.

Everything in the pile, every single symbol she could see meant death. Teeth, fire, destruction, rage, bitterness, power, loss of love, guilt, torment, sign after sign, piled onto one another like old friends, laughing at her. It was a miasma of horror and hatred with no discernible beginning nor end, and she twisted away, feeling sick.

But as she did so, she saw a glimpse of something. Underneath the a skull with a broken upper jaw and a completely missing lower one that kissed the clawed foot, the sign she knew meant a vassal, a promise of false loyalty, was a round and smooth bone. She hastened towards it, frowning, and carefully moved aside the skull to see it better.

There. Such a smooth, innocent bone, though broken, it had several little fingers and small tarsals spread like wings underneath. Freedom. Sweet freedom. But most of the left wing lay under the foot, and it was masked by the traitor, the liar.

She sat back on her haunches and stared, wanting to throw up.

#6 Kerberos

The big day was coming up! A very big day indeed. There was talk of treats and tricking - they were undecided about that - but what they were looking forward to the most would be the time spent with the others. There would be a gathering, and it was that gathering which Kerberos was preparing for right this second. One of the prerequisites was to have a costume; if anyone was within earshot of the giant hound, they would be privy to quite the argument on that topic.

The left-most head, with its ears pricked and face crunched in to a snarl, was complaining more than arguing.

"Costume is stupid! No costume! 'Ros is spookiest without." It yapped on, repeating itself as if the minds adjacent could not fathom speech and needed this point drilled in to them. The others weren't even listening.

"Ker says lion! Scary teeth, scary claws, but more fluff than we!" Its flopped ears twitched as it raised up, looking imperious as it made the decision, but the middle head was shaking to and fro, refusing the idea. "BEAR! Bear is big and scary like Kerberos! Big paws, like Kerberos!" They knew of Makyna and Leon, and could think of nothing scarier than when either of these friends were angry.

And so, should a gembond or any other entity traipse in to Kerberos' vicinity, this is what they would be facing. One voice shouting for one costume, one for another, and a third outright denying the event. Soon enough Kerberos had lost control of each head and even their body - it began to jerk around, first with one paw reaching in to the mud and splattering one head with brown. "AHEHEHE, see! Brown like bear! Easy costume!" Clearly it was the middle head's doing; it wasn't without retaliation though. As soon as the muddied paw dropped against the ground, it was reaching jerkily for some of the debris scattered by the entryway - they were arguing just outside of Cetus, the maw of mosses, and forest debris was everywhere.

With the mud acting as glue, the reaching paw managed to grab a nice fist-full, and then aimed for the middle head. It missed, splattering the wining and crying head with mud and leaves, and the poor thing stopped its complaining instantly. "NO! 'Ros want - 'Ros want - Why this?!" The head shook, trying to remove the lion's mane, but all that occurred was the flipping and flopping of the curled ears.

The middle head, having avoided an outright faceful of the stuff, was not entirely clean. Mud had sprayed across his pale face and added unwanted streaks - practically stripes.

The three heads looked at one another, and something sort of.. dawned on them. In unison (mostly), they chimed,

"Lions!" "Tigers!" "Bears!"

#7 Dorian

Through the caves I walked, paws light and spirits lighter. Why? Because I'd just done one of the most incredible things ever! I'd managed to climb one of the tallest trees in Eridanus. One might not know the reason as to why I would do such a thing but that wasn't for others to know --unless they asked but that's besides the point-- because I knew... and the tasty morsel in my stomach also knew. A content sigh came from my maw as I remembered the delicious taste of the colorful bird. Not only did it have gorgeous colors but it had an equally beautiful taste. A perfect morsel for a perfect hunter like me.

My head raised higher as I stalked along, looking down on those that dared glare in my direction... Or maybe they weren't glaring. Who cared? They were still to know that I was in charge around here. That these tunnels were mine! In fact-- Hey... Wait... Did that one just hiss at me?

Sure enough I turned back to look at a young feline, about my age, that turned his nose up at me with an annoyed hiss at me. He probably was a hater and couldn't take the fact that I held myself with such obvious confidence. Some people really needed to come to terms with their own shortcomings and stop trying to bring everyone else down. No matter... I was here to help him out with that.

With a hiss of my own I turned to him and growled out, "Just who do you think you're hissing at? I don't know who you think you are but my name's Dorian and I am not gonna be treated like some second-rate feline!" With a growl I shuffled forward, fur puffing up along my spine and ears pinning as I tried to show my dominance. It worked! The other cat, a young cheetah, backed off with his gaze averting to the side. With one last snort and a smirk I said, " Yeah, that's right! Learn to respect your betters!" I turned away with my dark tail raising in triumph.

My name is Dorian and I'm NOT a second-rate feline.
