The bilby was very sticky, and - being as small as she unfortunately was - it was too uncomfortable to bear. As the new-born started licking her soft pelt carefully, she let herself think. It was sad, as the bilby could not speak yet, despite how many times she had tried. Instead, she always mumbled something that must have been a different language. Anyway, all the bilby could remember was the chrysalis shattering and she fell out, dripping with stickiness from inside her old home.
There is something tough against my neck!
'Of course there is,' whispered a velvety voice from somewhere in the darkness. 'It is your diamond power source, a pretty gem in your chest.''
The bilby looked about her wearily, not listening to this voice anymore. Things were really becoming spooky in... wait, where was this place?
'Polaris,' purred the voice instantly.
The bilby was a tad frightened, but she didn't dare show it. Instead, she attempted her first steps. It worked quite well. Now to find the source of the voice, she thought, excitement bubbling inside her stomach.
'The voice is yours, didn't you realise?'
Only then did the bilby realise her mouth was opening whenever the voice came, but it couldn't be hers because she couldn't choose what it said or when it spoke next. It must be someone playing tricks on her. But the voice did sound like her mumbles, in a way, so perhaps the owner really was the nameless young bilby...
Of course! I need a name!
For a second or two, the bilby stood still. Not moving was the worst thing to do, but the bilby coped until a name sprang into her mind. She wanted to cry out that her new name was Jumper but her voice was not there, and she just grunted.
A glint shimmered from on the floor. Jumper leaned down and noticed a small necklace chain. With struggle, she made sure it was wrapped around her neck and she grinned proudly. 'What do you think of this, Voice? It really does look like I'm wearing a gem necklace.'
SMALL BODY. BIG HEART.

'Jumper is a stupid name,' her voice protested glumly. 'Choose something better.'
Jumper opened her mouth to argue, but of course she couldn't. In the end, things were utterly hopeless. So if her voice wouldn't allow the name Jumper, what name would it allow. Surely the bilby could be still called Jumper by her friends and her more formal name was to be decided. Jumper thought for a few more moments, itching to move again.
'Still got nothing?' provoked the voice.
The calm glow of the walls flooded ideas into Jumper's mind as if purposely, and she let them wash through her, searching for a decent one. Occasionally the perfect name slipped away, and she struggled to catch it again but it had gone. Whenever this happened, she grumbled in anger. And then she had it again, and tightened the grip so it couldn't wriggle free. That was it! Her new name! And she realised that the cave walls were still glowing, but far dimmer. And it seemed she had her voice back.
'My new name is Pepper,' she cried out, her voice echoing around the cave. 'Wherever you are, I'll be your friend.' Surely, there'd be someone out there somewhere?
SMALL BODY. BIG HEART.
