The tiny owlet once again found himself in the room where he was born. When he had first hatched he was unable to appreciate the numerous bones that lay in the room but now he could. Slowly, deliberately, he hopped around the place with eyes stretched wide to see all that he could in the dark area. The little owl was able to navigate his way over to one corner of the room where he could see a ledge. If only he could fly, he'd be able to fly up to the ledge and see what was up there. Perhaps later he would return to the ledge and get whatever it was down or maybe he could convince someone else to do it... or maybe there was another way altogether.

The owl cast around, blue eyes studying what he could and found that there seemed to be some way to get up. A series of precariously placed bones that might lead him up to the ledge if he jumped carefully. Putting on a determined face the avian prepared himself to make the jumps and finally with a flap of his wings, began his ascent. He managed to jump on one of the bones but when he made his next jump he misjudged it and fell with a loud crash as the other bones landed all around him. With a shout of alarm he covered his head with his wings but managed to go unharmed.

In the midst of the wreckage he found something that intrigued him all over. One of the smaller bones had broken from the impact of the fall and now lay in two pieces before him. Curious he wandered over and began to examine it, using his sodalite claw to move the pieces around and study them more closely.

Astaroth yawned slowly, the crash of bones woke him from his nap atop the ledge, he had made a set of small steps leading up to it to stay in while he looked for his hatching place. He supposed they had fallen over so he looked over the edge to look. When he saw the small owl on the ground looking at the bone he grinned, he hadn't seen another gembound in days. He craned his neck to try to see what the little bird was looking at. "Whatcha' lookin' at?" He called to the owl. Jumping down from his perch, yelping slightly when he landed on his disabled paw.

His eyes were completely focused on what lay out before him. The shattered remains of what he could only assume to be a long-dead creature. Or was that really the case? Were these bones in everything? Just hidden from site by the skin that was over them? What a nuisance. What if he wanted to study them on a creature that was still living... How could he see them if they were hidden away beneath the skin and fur. How could he be certain they even belonged to a certain kind of creature without looking into it? Tsk, how frustrating... How could he--

"Whatcha lookin' at?"

The owl's head snapped up instantly, eyes locked onto the face of a black canine. It had the same sort of build as his sister but with a different coat color, something that was noticeable even in the dark. The owl blinked slowly as he studied the canine before finally answering with, "These bones. I was studying them and thinking of a few things..." The last sentence was mused mostly to himself as he looked back at the old things.

"You are a wolf. I hatched alongside another of your kind. What is it that I should call you, wolf?" Always straight to the point, he was. He figured names as being important things though, they let him distinguish one creature from another more easily.

Astaroth looked at the owl curiously, he had hatched next to another wolf? the only other wolf he knew was that one Kin-Kin he met in the cave who so transfixed him. "Um, my name... my name is Astaroth, but you can call me whatever... what's so interesting with these bones? And wow am I rude, how have your waking hours been?" Azazel looked at the bones detachedly, he had never truly examined them... they really were interesting looking...."What's your name?" Astaroth grabbed a bone then, he gnawed on it a little, then strained against it, if he bites down hard enough and twists it maybe he can break it... he strains and strains but to no avail... it seems that he just isn't strong enough to do it yet, he throws it away and it snaps in half on a rock sticking out of the boulders. He runs over and grabs it, taking half of it back over to the owl, he looks inside it, there is dried grey stuff inside, he tries to taste it by licking it but it just tastes like dust. He smells it but it only smells like dried mold. "Where are these from anyway, I know what they're called but whenever I as anyone what or where they're from they get uncomfortable and stop talking."

The other character spoke in a series of sentences, all of which the owl listened to before deciding to answer. After briefly contemplating his own answers he finally said. "Astaroth." He didn't see the point in calling him anything else. That was his name and that was what he would call him. "That is what I am trying to find out. I seek to know what purpose these bones serve but how can one see the purpose when they are only found broken and outside of the body without serving their intended purpose." They just lay there, stagnant, collecting dust. In life, what did they do? It was a burning question in his mind. "My waking hours? They have been informative." As everyone's waking hours should be. Anything less was a waste.

When the wolf pup started chewing on the bone the owl looked at him disdainfully, eyes narrowing ever so slightly in displeasure. "Tacitus. That is what I am to be called." He gave one blink before his narrowed eyes became a full on glare. "You are damaging the specimens further. Please desist with your actions." No sooner had he said that did Astaroth throw the bone and cause it to break open further. The action made the owl let out a hoot of alarm but curiously he hopped over, wanting to see what the damage had done.

The gray powder was curious and he found himself staring at it while he lifted a claw to his lower beak as he thought. "Intriguing..." What had grown on the inside of the bones? He needed to know more. These old things could only provide so many answers. His head swiveled around to the pup, all previous annoyance forgotten. "I hypothesize that these bones are from the inside of all creatures. Just as we all have gems, we all have bones. But I have no way to test this, as of yet." So far he'd caught no food, no lesser gems to soothe his ravenous gut. Perhaps it was time to do something about that for the sake of his research.

"You, Astaroth, can you hunt?" It was asked suddenly and with no warning as he stared down at the canine with his strange blue eyes.

Astaroth looked at Tac bemusedly. "Actually, you happen to be in my favorite rat hunting spot. They get really big here, I caught one a couple days ago, about as big as you, rat's my favorite kind of meat. It's really rich" Astaroth's ears perked up after this. "In fact... I hear one not far from here... you want to help me track him? If not I can get him myself, I'm not that hungry since the last one but wow you're thin, you need to eat something." Astaroth squinted through the dark, he could see but it was slightly difficult, he had been born in the darkness and he could see in the dark as he had, but pure darkness was still pure darkness, no light for your eyes to filter through except the little bit of light reflecting off the walls from bioluminescent areas giving a resemblance of everything being dirty, like watching the world through a lens smeared with mud. He caught sight of the rat scurrying across the path a little bit away, he lowered himself to the ground and started into a sneaking trot. He tried to get as close to the rat as he could, eventually trying to hide behind a pile of bones behind it. He hid behind it and motioned for Tacitus to get behind the pile with him, he had no worries that the tiny owl would scare the creature away, he was too tiny, the rat was almost bigger than him, in fact he wanted him to distract the creature, while Tac distracted the creature, he would jump out and snap its' neck

Red rats. He didn't know what those were but if they were living things then he would be happy to have one laid about before him to study. The wolf pup went on to explain that he could find the prey and hunt it for him, he even went on to say that Tacitus could help him track it. The owl nearly scoffed but simply settled for a, "I'll allow you to do the tracking and hunting. This prey won't be for eating." He said, eyeing the pup critically. If at all he would want the rat undamaged with the exception being its life. He wanted to study the thing, not have it ripped apart. He knew that he wasn't eating as frequently as he should be but he knew there were far more important things to do than eat. Research took precedence.

He watched then as the pup lowered himself into a crouch, sneaking forward towards a bone pile where he could see a skittering rat. The owlet glanced at Astaroth, eyes narrowing slightly as the pup motioned to him to come join him. He thought this hunting expedition was for the black wolf only, not for him to do any work. He was simply here to observe and study the carcass, it was why he'd asked the pup to hunt for him.

The owl clacked his beak together with annoyance, accidentally turning the rat's attention on himself. The creature's beady black eyes stared hungrily at the bird and it seemed to be going towards the owl who was currently paying it no attention as he tried to join with the pup. If something didn't happen soon the owl might end up being the rat's snack.

Table code---
Astaroth had to hold back a short laugh when the owl inadvertently distracted the rat, his plan went perfectly. He jumped out and grabbed the rat by the neck, Trying to snap it by shaking the rat but it didn't break. He held it onto the ground then, Squeezing down on the neck of the creature. He held it there until it suffocated, he didn't like damaging the creatures he caught for others. When it stopped struggling he carried it over to the small owl, he closed his eyes and put his paw on it, hoping to feel that flow of power that always seems to come to him when he tries to see the past of an object. His eyes rolled back in his head for a second then he moved back, turning to loo a a pile of bones not far from where the rat was, he ran and jumped on it, grabbing a couple small rats from the den, snapping each of their necks as they ran out frantically, three others ran out but he let them go, if he killed them all then there wouldn't be anymore later. He grabbed the two dead rats and brought them each back to the owlet."There, now you can eat without damaging your main specimens."

The wolf rushed out as he was walking over to him, grabbing the neck of the rat and killing it. Not at once, it seemed he was too small to break the creatures neck so he used another method... suffocation. The owl watched with fascination as the creature's air was cut off and it seemed to die somewhat slowly. He'd learned something new today... Suffocation of a creature's air would cause a someone slow death in a matter of minutes or at least minutes in the case of a rat. How long would it take in a larger animal? He'd have to find that out later.

The wolf had one paw on the rat, seeming to be concentrating on something before running off and killing a few other rats... Hidden ones. How did he know they were there? Had he scented them? Or... had there been some other thing he'd done? He was not one to leave a question hanging for long. "What made you aware of those other rats?" He asked before stepping forward and placing a foot on the belly of the rat. He looked down at it, eyes roving over its form before deciding to slice it open vertically from neck to lower abdomen.

"There is no time for eating. There is work to be done." He hopped up onto the carcass and used both of his talons to pull it apart, exposing the mess of organs within. The owlet was pleased as he poked about at the strange things within the rat, soaking his feathers and talons in blood. "I am grateful for all of your help, Astaroth. Please feel free to take those two rats as payment, my payment is simply learning what is within." He didn't feel the need to eat, not when there was so much learn.
