Warning: Possible strong language and violence.

Every day was like this, except lately it'd been so much darker than ever before. Why, they wished in agony to find out, but the anxiety induced by straying too far was much worse. What if mother came home? And thus, the poor hybrid creature remained in his well-hidden home, constantly thrown into a moment of excitement at sounds that seemed like an elephant would make; branches moving, things crunching... but it was never her. Where had she gone? Vuiligheid missed her so much.

With a heavy sigh and a heavier heart, they dared a peak through the foliage and wiggled through it all, escaping into a small path they'd made from using it repeatedly. Their elongated nose reached for food, pulling it toward their mouth while their eyes and ears searched for every noise and every sight. While the lower half of their tail flicked back and forth wildly, the upper part remained clamped down, expressing how terrified they were of being caught out here, in the "open" away from their home (even though it was right behind them).

With wings still too small to carry the tiny owlet very far the creature was forced to walk upon the soil of the caverns. His wanderings carried him to a new room, one with an abundance of plant life. With eyes well-suited to the dark he was able to make out the various types of plants and creatures that roamed within the confines of the cavern. It was a strange new place but one that he welcomed. Perhaps one day when his wings had grown and he was able to fly he could take to the trees and see what all was hidden away here... but alas, he was grounded for now and such could only hop along.

His injured leg was all but healed and able to support his minuscule weight as he went along the area. As he hopped and searched he began to ponder on the complexities of magic. He'd heard much talk of it but never had he called upon it himself... Perhaps it was time he do something about that.

He came to a rest a few feet away from a den --one that he was unaware of because of its hidden nature-- as he focused on the ground. He didn't know what exactly he was expecting but maybe... something...

On the ground before him a tiny cream-colored mushroom began to grow. It was easily visible against the darkness around it and, intrigued, the owlet leaned closer to study it. His blue talon reached out to gently caress it as he pondered what on earth it was.

Mushroom.

A voice seemed to whisper in his mind in much of the same way that his own name had come to him. Had his magic grown this? Was his magic centered around... fungi? Fascinating.

Who knew how long they stood to graze, but it seemed like as good a time as any to take a nap. What else was there for them to do? So they turned, stepping on brush and fallen sticks. Sometimes Vuili wondered how their mother every got through this thicket of foliage; they vaguely remembered following behind, small trees toppled in her wake. Maybe when she came home, she'd teach them how.

Something finally caught their attention. Without even knowing what it was, they yelped and jumped sideways, snorting and blowing and kicking out. As the dust settled, they looked for the Scary Thing, finding it was some small bird on the ground. Was it sentient? Vuili arched their neck, ears erect and tail swishing. Clearly more horse than elephant, they were geared up to haul ass should the owl become threatening.

"Wh-who are you?!" they said, then pawed the ground as more a nervous tick than a threatening gesture. There was an impulsive drive for them to implore the owl to not eat them, but opted out of it, deciding it was far too silly.

His back was turned, eyes focused on the tiny mushroom he'd given life to so when all of a sudden there was a hoop and a holler behind him he was caught off guard. The tiny owl's head turned completely around to look at what had just made all of the commotion. It might have been smarter to flee but curiosity would always be a weak point in him as he wanted to see and learn what exactly was the starting point for anything.

After the dust settled the tiny owlet was able to see a rather humongous creature staring at him. It was a... strange thing, to say the least. It had a massive body with large legs and a nose that seemed to stretch out like some sort of appendage. Blue eyes widened to enormous lengths as he tried to decipher what exactly it was he was looking at. Never before had he encountered a thing so intriguing as this.

Completely interested he turned his body around so that he was completely facing it. "I am Tacitus the owl. Who are you? Or rather, what sort of creature are you, might I ask?" He questioned politely. He just had to know, it was burning him up inside to not have this knowledge.

The tiny thing had big blue eyes such a flexible neck. The way it looked was absolutely horrifying (to a horse), but his voice was very appealing. So, instead of fleeing into the night, they relaxed just a little so they could stand to speak to this... owl? They dropped their head and took a couple of steps forward, nostrils flaring, head tilted so they could really stare at the little thing.

"I am... Vuiligheid. Mother never told me what I am, but mother is an elephant, so I must be that," they replied. Slowly, they lifted their head again, then took the three steps needed to get to the entrance of their cave, disappearing inside. There was a mindless expectancy for the owl to follow. Inside, there was bedding; three spots, two clearly unused in some amount of time. The third was by itself and where Vuili chose to lay down. At the other spots, a collection of bones and gems laid in a pile... gems that once gave life to gembounds.

The large beast seemed to be wary of him which gave slight amusement to the tin gembound. Why was such a large creature so wary? Was it used to being hunted? Was it a timid thing? Both seemed strange to the owlet but he did not question and instead allowed himself to be inspected by those crimson eyes and sniffing nostrils. More words, answers, came from the mouth of the strange creature which Tacitus listened to without interruption, until it was his turn to speak. "Mother? What is... Mother?" He hadn't heard of the term before and it intrigued him. He felt as if it was something he should know but it just evaded him. The creature said they were an... elephant... He inspected that face once more with its long nose and trunk-like body... Elephant seemed to fit but it didn't seem completely... right. But how could he question? He had never seen an elephant before. "Does your Mother Elephant, look like you?" Without being asked he simply began to follow Vuiligheid, mostly so that he could keep speaking and receive answers to his multitude of questions.

Once inside the cave the owl took a quick look around, noticing the nesting spots but allowing his eyes to settle on the gemstones and bones. He found himself attracted to the assembly and began to hop over to them, head twisting this way and that as he ogled them like a mindless bird. One talon reached out as he prepared to touch one but stopped before turning to the gembound. "May I?" He asked in reference to one of the gemstones. He'd seen bones before but he hadn't seen gems without their owners... unless these weren't magically imbued stones and were just dead ones. Hmm... So many questions.

What was a mother? Vuiligheid was truly the last to know, but they would certainly think they'd know. With a head held up high, they smiled proudly for knowing something this owl did not. "A mother is someone who takes care of your and protects you and trains you for your future!" All true traits of a mother; unfortunately, Vuiligheid was only cared for and protected as a coveted item, trained for a life as a subservient thing for a heartless, sadistic beast who enjoyed the power of "being" a "mother."

Does Vuiligheid look like mother? They looked at their trunk, remembering their mother had one as well. Having never seen their own reflection, they concluded they did, and gave a very stern nod. "Mother says I look like an ugly. I'm not sure what that means, but we have the same nose, at least!" A happy whinny followed.

Something Gadanai had learned and started doing was drying leaves. It was also something she taught to Vuili before she disappeared. As such, Vuili was munching on some dried leaves they kept by their bed, watching Tacitus like a hawk. As the bird's talon reached for a gemstone in the pile, their breath hitched and eating paused. With a very heavy swallow, food barely chewed, he said, "I don't know... One of those is my sibling. Mother had to kill it because it was too weak and deformed. The little green one belong to some wolf, Mother told me so. The bones are of the dead. Mother likes them. I was never allowed to touch Mother's things."

With that, Vuiligheid continued to watch the owl, munching on more leaves.

Ah, a mother. When the young creature explained it, it all seemed to click into place what exactly a "mother" was. Tacitus didn't have one of these but he felt that this was a small sacrifice. He needed no one to care for him as he was perfectly capable of doing so on his own. Besides, wouldn't a "mother" hold you back and keep you from exploring and otherwise learning what was out in the world. Hmm, no thanks. He was perfectly happy with being his own parent.

An "ugly". What sort of a mother would say that their child was an ugly? They didn't know what an "ugly" was. Well, it seemed as his expertise was required here. "'Ugly', something that is repulsive or unpleasant in appearance. Your mother must find you unappealing in some way though if you both look the same I can't imagine how unless she finds her own appearance unpleasant." He blinked, there was no malice in his words, he was speaking matter-of-factly as if just explaining a simple fact which in his eyes he was. He wasn't trying to be rude or terrible, he was just attempting to educate an acquaintance.

His question seemed to be met with tight words and an ambiguous answer. Tacitus' talon hovered over the gems for a moment longer before he sat it back down on the ground, empty. If these gems belonged to this "mother" then he would not touch them, at least not without permission. "If that is the case I will not touch, simply look, until I gain the permission of your mother to examine them more thoroughly." Instead he leaned down to take a look at the little green gem and then the other that lay next to it. Hmm... So could gembounds be born too weak to sustain life? Or perhaps this other one was just "ugly" and "mother" decided to stomp it out of existence...

Pity. If it was weak he would have liked to at least see it before its life was ended, at least then he could have studied it. "Do you remember what your sibling was like?" His head suddenly turned, strange blue eyes questioning and examining the other creature. Who knew he'd have such a productive day today? Wouldn't Gabriel be pleased to hear of his findings?

Contentment had overcome Vuiligheid, up until the owl explained what "ugly" meant. They frowned hard, ears falling and eyes dropping to stare at the ground in embarrassment. They idly nibbled on a leaf, but never actually ate any of it, mulling over and moping about the true meaning of ugly. It lead them to wonder what "filth" really meant, but they dared not ask. It couldn't possibly be any better.

With a little sigh, they finally looked up at Tacitus again, glad the owl could at least respect their mother's belongings, even if they ruined the word ugly. In that moment, Vuiligheid suddenly realized there was stranger in their home, explicitly against Mother's wishes. It send a chill up their spin, making their fur stand on end. Luckily, the owl was around to ask another question, distracting the hybrid from their thoughts.

"Oh, uh... Kind of. He wasn't around for long. Had some feathers, a beak... He walked and talked a bit funny, but was very kind. I woke up a few days after hatching and Mother said he was dead."

Voices came from her home, now hidden behind trees, ferns, vines, and growth. One was familiar - Vuiligheid for certain. The other was a stranger, which bubbled up a fine annoyance inside her. She listened, catching the bird telling Vuiligheid what "ugly" meant. She could only imagine the look on their face, probably moping into the dirt. She listened as they answered about their sibling, eyes rolling at how naive Vuili had remained in all this time. What an idiot.

With a loud bellow, Gadanai ripped into the brush with her trunk and tore into the trees with her tusks, uprooting them and throwing them aside until she had more than enough space to step in. Her bright red eyes locked onto Vuiligheid, then to the owl, earning a snort from her trunk.

"The creature Vuiligheid speaks of was born of myself and the gem of a duck I got a hold of. It was short, fat, hideous. Nice. Pleasant. Disgusting. So I got rid of it and kept the one with some use," she snarled, reaching passed Tacitus to pick up the amethyst. "I a, Vuiligheid's mother. My name is Gadana Ama, or Gadanai. You are in my territory. You should appeal to me, lest I kill you for sport."

Gadanai dropped them gem, then lowered her foot onto it... and stomped it, shattering it. She dug the shards into the ground, no intention of bringing such a mess back into the world ever allowed. What was once a duck named Kawenu and all his legacy was now dust to be forgotten.
