Otter Moonlit Dream

The caves were often quiet, but for many cycles a little alcove had stood, quieter than most. A den perhaps dug by cave rats in aeons past now played host to the webs of spiders, and a large chrysalis of royal blue at its entrance, where it had stood for many cycles, and not just whilst the creature inside had been slumbering. Something, though heavens knows what, had caused the being within to stir, a creak barely audible from within. The creaking continued, followed by the occasional rap of stone upon stone...

A crack slowly spread over its lovely gold-streaked surface. A chip broke loose here and there... and in the end, the stone dumped its heavy load onto the cold, hard earth. Dripping and oozing, Eira's fluid-filled lungs spluttered and choked back to life. For a few moments the otter lay where she'd emerged, for, dispite the freedom to stretch her limbs, there was no light to tell her that she was indeed free.

Long moments passed...

Nothing.

Even despite her single eye gazing glazed off into the dark, there was nothing there. As she waited, however, the glows slowly began to reach her- a speck of glowing moss, a newly formed crystal...just enough for the otter to realize that yes, she was free. Slowly, Eira gathered shaking limbs beneath her and stood, slowly but surely.

Her proud, masked head rose up from the ground, suddenly heavy on her shoulders. The air was chilly against her scars and clear fluid slicked her fur flat. It had been so long, and yet something was wrong.

It shouldn't be this dark.

Had her disappearance let demons run wild?
