There, embedded in the wall alongside an intricate carving of something unimaginable, was a chrysalis. The chrysalis itself did not seem so out of place in the dark of the cave, with a plethora of bones to cushion the creature inside, should it hatch. It could've been there for aeons just watching, waiting for the exact time of ripeness to pass, for the creature inside to be set free. It could've formed in the past few hours too, but judging by the limited sense of magicka in this section of Canis, that was unlikely. Either way it had gone unseen for some time - just another structure, another piece of another puzzle. The dull glow of energy from within helped to illuminate the creature to some extent; it was large for a child, but no details could be discerned. Much like an egg being held up to a candle for inspection, the chrysalis gave few secrets. But the creature inside shifted, kicked, and there was a shift to the surface of the iridescent corundom. Pieces flaked off, fell among the darkness and the bones, but the babe inside was not free... yet.

It was impossible not to notice the practically clear glass egg that had begun to take its final stretch against the cave's west wall in recent wakes. Though Carni had watched from a distance, distracted by his activities with rebuilding his father's fallen kingdom, he had indeed occasionally spared the growing glass case a glance.

At one point, he might even have brushed it with his feathers as he'd gone about cleaning and sorting the cave in preparation for his recruits' arrivals.

He hadn't spared it any mind today, at least, he certainly hadn't meant to.

Until it began to creak and crack. Those always-active ears and ever watchful eyes immediately took notice, for the white king had only barely awoken for the day. His ledge located on the very same wall, he'd been half-waking when the first movements shifted below him. He thought it felt a familiar shape, the little glass egg, though he did not call it an egg in his head, but a chrysalis of course. Just like his two new gemlings growing on the opposite side of Canis.

As more flakes of glass fell away from the now active egg- a thing he'd never of noticed at all had it not been for its change in size as its new life grew- began its final efforts to break free, Carni finally rose and stretched, the extortion of his spine a spectacle with those wings curved at such an odd angle. Yawning away the last of his sleep, he lifted from the wall's higher ledge and circled easily down to the egg's resting place.

"You got this." He mumbled, still sounding sleepy as he settled in to watch over this new arrival into his kingdom. Canis born. Of course the kingdom would offer it sanctuary, offer it rank. Protection.

He could only hope whatever born of this crystal egg would feel inclined.

It would not take long before the chrysalis gave in to the pressure from inside, and came loose with a large crack. The sound was swallowed up by the intricate shape of this particular cavern; the skulls and bones secreted the noise away within themselves. As the large chunk of corundum slid free and crashed to the floor, the bones that would've cushioned the babe either shattered or were dislodged, and went tumbling in all directions. The creature within was hidden after that - a plume of bone dust rising from the commotion, giving the new being a dramatic entrance.

At which point the creature, stuck upside-down within its egg for so long, came tumbling out and landed awkwardly on its back. Its long neck spasmed through the dust, its beak catching a flash of light, and as the dust settled so too did the babe - but it was sprawled on its back with its legs kicking at the air and a myriad of "Prrrppt!" sounds tickling the back of its throat. All that the chick could see was darkness at first, but as its eyes adjusted it saw bones and skulls, and then in the corner of its vision - white.

In time and with effort, the egg split to let its captive go free. The newborn spilled out at his paws and he flared his wings in empathetic pride.

He didn't speak just yet, not wanting to confuse the newly woken mind of the young chick- for indeed, in all its original serendipity, the glass egg had hatched a not-so-little bird- so instead, he bent to gently offer a soft paw in putting the chick upright. Certainly a bird was not suited for a life upside-down. Heh.

The damp plumage was brown, dappled with varying shades. This little one would suit Canis well for its earthy tones. All the more, he hoped they'd stay.

Before he knew it, something was guiding him to his feet. Rolling his rotund body around until those big digits could touch down. He was rocky at first; disoriented from the fall, from the awakening of his creation. At first the boy crouched and rested. He found comfort being upright - and more when, with eyes closed, he thought he could sense something nearby. It wasn't a hard thing to deduce that someone (or something) was with him. The child didn't think, it only reacted - and turned its head, locking eyes upon the pale creature with wings so big and without hesitation, he stood up and lurched towards it. Carni wasn't far at all so when the newborn moved he practically piled on top of the mutant; then, contented by the warmth of the other creature, tucked his head in as close as it could get to the feline-things fur, as if preparing for a nap.

The chick's eyes finally fell upon him and he beamed with a warming grin, because that little moment of contact swelled his heart two sizes holy heck who knew babies were cute!?

"Woah, hey!" He laughed, voice gentle as the chick suddenly barreled into him and buried itself into his fur. Scent closer and clearer, he decided the chick was indeed a boy bird, because he smelled different but the same as Azazel had. Something like more bone than meat, where girl birds had always smelled meatier. More parts inside maybe.

He'd let himself explore these thoughts absently for a moment, lulled by the chick's warmth against his fur, and those big wings settled over the two of them easily. He'd have easily drifted off in that position, if not for his interest in the bird. Could he speak yet? Did he have a name?

"I'm Caerwyn." He introduced, sounding dreamy. "You can call me Carni if you want, though." He shifted their positions slightly so he could bend his legs and settle in a more comfortable crouch. "Do you have a name you'd like to go by, little chick? Can you speak it?" He didn't sound as if he were speaking to another gembound but as if distantly asking these questions to the air, because he hardly expected any answers from the tired newborn. Rather, he decidedly tucked his new ward closer and yawned, because this warmth was alluring, pulling him back to that sleepy state he'd been in just moments before his new ward had begun to hatch.

He was big enough and developed enough to master walking quite fast, so who knows - maybe Carni had found himself a capable child. It stared at the white-thing that would become dad and listened to them talk, studying them with sleepy eyes. It was much harder for the chick to avoid drifting off, and even while Carni questioned it, the child found himself unable to focus. He was sleeping moments later - the kind of half-sleep you'd expect from a tuckered out toddler.

The chick, wrapped in feathers and fur, had already begun to nod off. Carni realized he'd get no answers today.

Still, it felt good, welcoming a new life into a world. His eyes travelled to where his twins sat, waiting to be ready. They would have an older brother now. Warmth spread through Caerwyn's cheeks and ears and he tightened his wing to gently scoop the chick's weight up. Not enough that the chick would even notice, he hoped, as he began a slow walk back to his own twins' spot.

If he managed to get them both there without stirred the chick much from its sleep, he'd settle down himself, wing still protectively wrapped around the new ward as he too settled down to nap. His free wing spread to cover both crystal eggs and looking rather like a mother hen warming her eggs, he tucked in his chin and closed his eyes.

Assuming nothing else roused the young king and his new prince from slumber, the pair would rest the night away in each-other's comfort.

"...welcome to your kingdom, Morigarra." Final words, a name, whispered in the final moments before Carni's own mind drifted into dreams and gentle silence.
