For a long moment, things were still in Pisces. Sure, the waterfall kept roaring in the background, constantly churning water bubbling away, but the cave felt paralyzed.
Bevy had never pressed into another's fur before. Never. She perched on Cancer's horns, touched her beak to others, but never ran her feathers against fur. It was growing cold against her down. She could have saved him, she thought, there was something she should have done.
A soft voice caught her attention and the young bird looked at the lioness for a moment, pulling her red and black body -- warning signs, danger, do not touch-- from the cooling corpse. She met Makyna's eyes, wondering just what she could say.
"He was a bad gembound," she peeped, weakly. "But he was just a baby, he... He could have learned. He could have..." No one deserved to die. Bevy never wanted to see another gembound die. No more suffering. She couldn't handle it. It was just so horrible.
"I... Wish I could bring him back."
It was then that Bevy's eyes caught the glisten of the water-blue, copper tinged gem that had belonged to Teyouma. She stepped over to it, wrapped her talons around the gem. She remembered his pulsing, color-filled chest, the way his see-through skin had shown his gem beneath the surface, by his heart. It was beautiful. He was beautiful. In a strange, disturbing way, he was full of Life just like them all.
Maybe some day she would figure out a way to bring him back. She clutched his gem and looked back up at Makyna, trying to stay strong for her friends. She wanted more than anything to fly home to her nook, curl up and sleep forever.
