Enka was pleased with everything. She was pleased at the little sprouts that had appeared. She was pleased that Rift was proud of her. She was pleased that the plants would be okay according to Rift’s reassurances. And she was pleased that her magical training was going to continue. Was it any wonder that the calf was excited for the next step?

Immediately Enka lowered her head and nuzzled the newest sprout though not as gently as the feline had done. She was excited to see if she too could make the flowers bloom. Her horn did light up, but it was a shakier glow than before. It was clear that her buzzing excitement was affecting her ability to focus and allow the magic to flow from her to the plant.

But the magic did flow. The sprout began to shakily grow taller. More leaves formed and rolled out. A tiny lily bud formed at the top. The bud went from a soft yellowish green to slowly a pinkish light. A few petals released their grip, opening up. Still, most of the petals hung close. The plant had grown and blossom in all technically. It was still a young plant standing of evidence that Enka still needed more practice.

This couldn’t faze the young springbok though. Enka smiled, looking up at Rift. “Like that?” she asked, rushing the words and grinning full heartedly. She was doing it. She was creating magic just like her mentor could. It was an amazing day!

It then slowly began to hit her that this was just her first day. She gave a yawn, lowering herself to the ground to look over her baby and not quite so baby plants. If asked, though, she would most certainly be willing to continue. The young rarely recognize their limitations. And indeed Enka still had a broad grin on her face, though it was a bit more lazily at this point.

Rift watched with happiness as Enka grew the plant all the way into the flowering stage. Although it was slower then he could have done, and only a single, and not quite all the way, it was her first time trying and her first day using magic! More then he had done in his first day, certainly! "Wonderful! You're a very fast learned, Enka! You'll fly right through what I have to teach you!" At first, it was a little bit of a scary thought, teaching someone that would learn too quickly, but wasn't that for the better? So then they could learn new things together?

He noticed her yawn and stood, realizing how exhausted she must have been with all the excitement on her first day. "But now, we've learned enough for today. You need your rest and its about time that I returned home as well. Come, I'll show you where you'll be staying!" Not really waiting for her to respond, too excited to show her his wonderful tree, he turned and bounded through the familiar forest.

After a while, they came upon the giant tree that Rift called his home and he turned back, where Enka hopefully had followed. "What do you think? There's plenty of moss bedding inside to make yourself a place to sleep."

The feline’s praise made Enka feel very proud. She looked up at him with a dreary smile on her face and a flick of her tail. She didn’t know that she was particularly talented, she had nothing to compare it to other than her teacher. But she was glad to know that she was doing well. There was some doubt in her mind at his words, though. She couldn’t begin to consider that she would learn more than he knew about magic. He seemed very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about it. In her mind, he knew everything about the plant world.

“Yeah,” she thought lazily. “Rift the plant kitty knows all about the plants,” She giggled softly to herself at the thought.

Then Rift announced that they were done for the day. Enka wanted to refute this, to let him know that she could do more (or at least so she believed) but he gave her no chance to debate the topic. The words were no more escaped from his muzzle than he had turned and dashed off deeper into the caverns. She was left, mouth agape in surprise.

After a moment’s pause the springbok shook her head and leapt to her feet. She bounded after the feline as best as possible. Fortunately, Rift was not trying to be stealthy and following him proved to be an easy enough task. And for a pace the two travelled through Eridanus.

In time Rift had stopped and turned back towards her. Enka was close enough to catch his words. She slowed down and walked over to were he stood just as she finished. By this point Enka was well tired. It had been quite a first day of post-chrysalis life for her. They had travelled, she had done much in the way of magic, and then travelled again. Even she wouldn’t try to argue to do more.

And Rift’s home looked very inviting. A giant tree in the midst of the forest. Her night vision wasn’t the best but she could see between the roots to where Rift’s den was. The moss bedding sounded delightful. So, while she didn’t feel as strong of a need to be inside to sleep like Rift probably did, she couldn’t argue with the idea of a soft bed.

The springbok nodded to the cougar and made her way into the den. It was larger than it appeared from the outside. Enka propped down in a little corner near the entrance and rested her head.

“Thank you Rift.”

Rift watched Enka happily make herself at home in his den. There was a pile of fresh moss in the corner and it was from here that he pulled out his own nest and put it in a small hollow in the darkest part of the den. He was exhausted as well, from the run and the effort of magic and explanation. Besides, he was already working himself ragged from the cleaning of the forest. Hopefully this would be a good way to take his mind off things while also getting out to destroy what was left of the plague.

When he rested his head on his paws, he softly said, "Sleep well," before immediately drifting off into a dreamless sleep.

What a busy day it was. Thoughts from the day’s events passed through Enka’s mind as she slowly drifted off to sleep. From hatching, to finding Rift, to discovering magic it had been an amazing day. She wondered a bit what the next day would bring. And the one after that. And the one after that….

And before she knew it, the young springbok had fallen fast asleep.
