Aegir turned towards where Heart-Song was aiming their spell and prepared himself for another leap. He was never very good at hunting or attacking, but he was, after all, a bear, and he needed to eat. He would sit by rivers and sit still before lunging for a fish or stand and let them swim by his legs. But never where he had to leap at them.

So when the fish came to the surface, Aegir again lunged forward, mouth outstretched, trying to catch one of the fish. It caught his shadow and darted away just as he lost his grip on the sand below. With a yelp, he crashed into the water and banged his head on a rock sticking out. He immediately surfaced and gasped, rubbing his pounding head. "Aegir is sorry, he is not used to fishing this way! One more time, Aegir has an idea."

"It's okay, you don't need to apologize!" Heart-Song reassured Aegir. "I understand if you're not used to this!" They smiled at him as they readied their magic for the third time inside their jewel, pulling it forward. This time, they went for a different sound than the last two times, as to make sure the fish didn't get used to it. A high-pitched ringing noise echoed from beneath the water, driving the fish to the surface yet again.

If Heart-Song had fingers, they'd be crossing them now, as they silently rooted for Aegir. He would succeed this time, they knew it!

Aegir closed his eyes and breathed deeply, trying to keep focused on the task and to not let his frustration overtake him. This would take some concentration to work properly, but he felt better about this then trying to fish in a place different then what he was used to. He let himself attune to the water, feeling the movement of the fish and their scatter at Heart-Song's noise. He tracked the movement of one of them and thrust magic their way, but it wasn't fast enough. The spell, weak as it was, closed around empty water and the fish escaped. Aegir opened his eyes, but the only visual sign of his frustration was a twitch of his ear and his silence.

He didn't wait for Heart-Song to do anything else or to even notice his failure. Aegir simply closed his eyes again and breathed, preparing himself for a quicker strike. He chose a fish that was closer to him. Now that they were calming down, he realized that it would be easier to do this. He felt through the water, she twists and turns of the wave, the subtle movements under the surface, and predicted the fish's path. Just as it was about to pass through his chosen area, he sent a jolt of magic through the water and felt an anguished vibration run through the waves as ice was rapidly formed around and under the fish. Immediately, it thrashed, trying to escape its prison while Aegir opened his eyes and lunched for his little open ball.

The fish just realized that there was an opening as soon as Aegir reached out with his jaws, plunging his head underwater. He closed his teeth around it just as it was swimming free and managed to crunch down, breaking its spine, and rendering it immobile.

He stood up and turned towards Heart-Song with the fish clamped in his jaws, his eyes shining. He began to make his way towards the shore again, wading through the water, and setting the fish down on the sandy shore. With a quick bite to its neck, the fish was dead. "Aegir is sorry it took so long," he rumbled as he leaned down to take a bite. It was juicy and flavorful, salty but fresh. He stood aside so that the little bird could join him, if they wished.

Heart-Song gave the bear a wide smile. "Don't worry about it! It's your first time, and I don't mind waiting a bit!"

Curiosity welled up inside them as they walked over to the dead fish. They had never really tried any sort of meat before, after all. That same curiosity drove them to take a tentative bite of the fish. Heart-Song chewed for a few moments, thinking the flavor over. It was different, that was for certain. It was meaty and flavorful, rich in a way that plants weren't and savory where insects were more.. nutty.

In short, they found they liked the taste, going in for another bite. "This is tasty!" she said, looking up at Aegir.
