The snake made her way in a circle around the goose's talons, raising and lowering her head to try to get a better look at it. It was tall, much taller than she was. She wondered if she would grow like that too, but looking down at herself it was hard to imagine sprouting feathers and turning a completely different color.

She returned to the front of the goose, satisfied with her exploration for the time being. Perhaps it didn't want to hurt her, even though she would never call it harmless with its spikes and talons. Getting braver, she moved closer and raised her head off the ground to get a better look. But she was small, and even that only elevated her a few centimeters.

Blackberry watched the snake carefully as it wound itself around her. She sighed, trying to stop herself from just picking up the snake and plopping it right on her talons. It obviously wanted to check her out, but it seemed too nervous.

Finally, as it stopped and raised its head, she couldn't stop herself. She lifted a talon, making sure to keep the claws curled inwards, and placed it right below the snake, trying to prop up their head in case they wanted to climb onto her legs. She really didn't have the patience to deal with this for much longer.

The snake's entire body froze as the goose placed its talon beneath her head. Something along the lines of AHHHHHH ASDFJKL IT'S GONNA CLAW ME I'M GOING TO DIE flashed through her mind, sending terror through her veins. But a moment passed and she wasn't dying, and the snake became aware of how nice it felt. Before she could stop herself, she climbed up the talon, curling herself around the goose's leg. Oh, it felt so nice, having the warmth of the goose. Maybe she'd stay here for a while longer.

The feeling of having a snake crawling up her leg was a strange one indeed and she had to force herself not to shake it off. If she wanted this child to join her family, then she had to be patient. It would grow and learn and, if truths were told, she was excited to teach it.

So they couldn't stay here, she had to bring it to their nest if she wanted it to truly become one of them. She carefully raised her leg, balancing on the other and brought it up as far as she could. "Don't worry, I won't hurt you," she whispered, as softly as her harsh voice could go. She carefully leaned forward, a bit hesitantly, before picking up the snake in her beak, as softly and gently as a goose with a hawk's beak and sharp teeth could go. Trying to be quick but delicate, she tried to take the snake off of her leg to put it on her shoulder, encouraging them to instead curl around her neck and shoulders instead of her leg.

If the goose hadn't hurt her before, it wouldn't hurt her now, right? Trying very hard to not panic, the snake allowed the goose to bring its leg up without a fuss. The beak had her more worried, but she quickly realized it was trying to get her off its leg. The tugging was unpleasant and brought up the snake's instinctual fear of predators, but she did her best to ignore it and focus on slithering onto the goose's shoulder instead. And oh, this was even better! The goose's feathers were so fluffy, so warm. She quickly decided it was a nice place to stay, and relaxed, draping her top half across the goose's neck.

With the snake now comfortably on her shoulders, Blackberry realized that she actually kind of liked the feeling of them there. They didn't feel particularly warm, but the tiny weight and the feel of their breathing was kind of nice. She could get used to this.

She arched her head so that she could look at the snake drapped around her neck and affectionately nudged the smooth part of her beak against their head. "I'll take you home now. I can be your mother." How would the rest of the family react? Probably fine. She was the one in charge after all. If she said this snake could join, then this snake could join. She would raise them as well. And even if they weren't as venomous as Winter, there were other ways to fight. Huckleberry didn't like using their talons. Perhaps this one would learn as well.

But they needed a name, proper for a member of the family. She thought for a moment before coming up with a nice little name for the little snake. "Your name is going to be Dewberry." She nodded to herself and then set off towards the tunnel at an even pace, elation in her steps, knowing that she had acquired another child.

The goose nudged the snake's forehead with her beak, and the snake flicked her tongue at the goose. Not to smell it this time, but as an affectionate gesture. It felt wonderful, nestled within the goose's feathers, warm and loved. Yes, the goose would be her mother now. That sounded perfect. And her name was Dewberry. The snake whispered the name a few times, trying to get it to sound right. Dewberry. That was her name. And Mother Goose was going to take care of her. Wasn't that just amazing? Basking in the warmth and Mother's love, Dewberry decided that she was happy.
