Oka was relieved no one was hurt. A bee wasn't too bad, but all the bees they'd seen were pretty nice. They didn't get to think for too long on this, as Max was in their face nigh instantly. Oka drew their eyes back into nubs. Oka wasn't exactly used to other greater gembound. "I don't bounce." They paused. They had never really tried to bounce."...I think." Oka didn't like how this dog smelled. They had a weird, off scent to them. Oka slowly began to back off, clutching their meager collection of flowers.

Then the lizard who'd been called squishy called his eyes weird. "My eyes?" Each eye turned towards each other. Then back. All these animals had stationary eyes. A part of them wanted to protest, but they hadn't really seen any other animals with eyes like them. Well, aside from that one weird hare. "I...yeah." Oka thought it was a pretty fair assessment. They couldn't quite figure out if they should be offended or not. Though they were leaning on the side of offense. They perked up when Quziux asked their name, however. "Im Oka!" They said. "Qisziux." They pronounced each syllable slowly. It was a big name, hard for the newborn snail. "Thats a normal name?" Oka wasn't sure. They hadn't really met any named gembound, they'd simply enjoyed the sound of their own name. Maybe their name should be bigger too.

Tagging along - or more accurately, attached to Black's tail was a lamb still gangly with youth. Judging from his bulging white eyes, this was either his first foray into Polaris or an excessively overwhelming trip to make with all of the sights. Crown shook with anticipation just the same, eyeing every crystal that his father plodded across and becoming vastly enraptured with his own reflection in them. Cetus lacked any of these beautiful stones. Even if he couldn't touch the glowing blue ones (he'd tried...) he adored them.

Distracted by a particular one, Crown didn't notice as his father trailed after a yipping noise. He was singularly focused on watching his gem-reflection move about, distorted by the irregular shape. A soft, breathy laugh escaped him. It was the gentlest of bleats, deepened with age but light nonetheless.

He swung his head (mindful of the horns) to tell his father something, but suffered another shaking spell as he was nowhere near Crown's immediate vicinity. The lamb bleated softly, more forcefully, cantering on the spot and pawing at the ground. Spotting a sharp black mass among all of the blue and iridescence, he trotted over, tail wagging frantically as his tongue lolled out of an altogether too sheep-like muzzle. His ears pricked back, classic anxious dog behavior - and he bumped against Black's flank once.

Figuring he was in the middle of a conversation, Crown lowered his head and stood just close enough to feel his father's body heat, but maybe not be pressed hard against him.

Wherever Crown went, so did Sword- and he was a bit delayed in this, this time. Single ear flicking, he had his mind solely set on one thing and one thing only- winning some impromptu hide and seek session that only he knew about.

His brother hadn't noticed him yet- disappointing, slightly, but he'd make do. Maybe some attention would help? Channeling into his magic, he drew up a faint colorless glow, head obviously around the side of a rock to see if there was a reaction. Nothing? Really? Oh- but Crown was looking at something. Trundling out of his hiding space, Sword completely forgot his game and scooted in close, watching his form distort alongside his brother's panicked one.

He almost asked 'what's wrong' but when he turned, he noticed they were missing their father. Hey, he wasn't a part of the game! Sword snorted in a vague move of being disgruntled, head swivelling to the direction they came from.

Ah, no. Crown found him, as evidenced by the soft bleats. When he moved, so did Sword, tail wagging to and fro with a wide eye and ear perked in interest. What were they talking about? While Crown stood near the Black Dog, Sword's head poked around his side, tittering quietly in bird-like fashion.

Max tilted his head for a long moment, thought over Black's words, forgot what he was thinking about, then remembered, "Maybe!"

Then Deli, that really cool dog, and he took a moment to ask "Will I walk like you eventually you are very cool and tall! I am looking for a hole it is very important! The pokey-smelly man called himself the Collector and he said I am dying and that finding the hole will help a lot of gembounds! I like him, he gives good scratches and gave me this shiny thing and said it will help me find the hole!" he puffed out his chest, before leaning into the touch with a wag of his tail that sent him staggering as his head spun.

To Qisziux, "But you look squishy." and it was more of an observation of anything, an idiot's accidental bluntness. "That is a hard name, I will call you Qiz. I like you squishy-thing."

His tail wagged harder as he looked at Oka, "You are very cute and I like you, will you be my friend? I have never seen an anything like you! Such a cute squishy!" he reached out with a stiff leg to try and pat Oka's head like he'd been patted, "I like this do you like this?"

It was then he noticed Crown and Sword, and his tail wagged violently enough to stumble, a doggy grin lighting up his face "Hello you two are very cute it's nice to meet you!"

Black was not particularly good at subtleties, and did not notice--nor would he have particularly paid attention to--the look in Deli's eyes.

"It is good that you survived," was all that he said--and then he looked back toward his children. "The bird and the lamb did not. I have returned them," he added--and then, without explaining, clarified: "They became one, though they remain two." Pale blue eyes lingered briefly on the twinned gemstone atop Sword's head. And then, equally without explanation: "They are both Crown."

Black turned to briefly look among the other creatures present. There was a lizard--prettily-patterned, and young; and there was a shelled creature, one new to him, and this one drew his eye. A spiral shell; a soft body. Unique, he decided, and watched it with some interest.

Eventually he turned his gaze back toward the Spire, and the patches of charred rock--some of which, even after having visited and checked Polaris repeatedly since, brought with them chills. Memories of crying children, of a dragon tossing back its head-... Best not to revisit them.

He looked to the children. He'd told them he'd show them the place, on the way to Orion. And now he had.

"This is where you died." There was no emotion in it, only blunt fact, and an obliviousness to any distress that the statement might cause. He'd already told them the story, after all--several times, as they'd grown, to ensure they understood it.

Now he looked to Max, job done: and to the stone the golden dog was describing.

"I am looking for a hole it is very important! The pokey-smelly man called himself the Collector and he said I am dying and that finding the hole will help a lot of gembounds! I like him, he gives good scratches and gave me this shiny thing and said it will help me find the hole!" Black listened, his pendulous ears pricking up: he knew the Collector. What was this... hole? How could this dog possibly be dying?

Black pressed forward, with only the brief warning: "I will touch the stone." Then his cold nose met the oily rock, and the faint shock of some strange magic roiled through him.

He saw nothing in it--only that strange sense of cold--and so he pulled away again, puzzled. "How does a stone help you to find a hole?" he asked, quizzically; "And what purpose does this hole serve?"

Deli
Deli snickered at both of the dogs. "Walk like me? I sure hope not! Unless someone tries to kill you!" They looked back at the children hanging off of Black. They didn't particularly care, but amusement twinkled in their expression. They already knew the others didn't survive - in fact, they had a good chunk of both gems carried within the satchel at their side. "Ahahaha, good thing they're...back." They gave the kids one more smile before turning their attention away.

They looked at the retriever with eyes and grin wide, studying the stupid thing. Too friendly, too loud. Of course he was going to die - someone would kill him eventually. But Deli knew of the Collector as well - considered going to him for something good, some kind of treasure, and if he sent him on this mission, then maybe it was worthwhile.

Deli began expanding their senses again. If this dog wasn't going to go and find the hole like he was supposed to, then Deli supposed that they could try their luck. They wanted to sense more, smell and hear and feel more. Did something shift beneath the ground? Did something smell strange, besides the dog in front of them? Could they hear the echoing dark of a tunnel instead of solid ground beneath their feet?

Their senses expanded so dramatically that, at first, Deli was overwhelmed, eyes blown wide and body beginning to tremble a bit from all the sensory input. They flinched at the slightest of noises, the smallest of movements, every breath the others took they could hear it like their ear was in their mouth. Hopefully, they found something soon. This, for too long, would be too much.

Deli's mind swept wide, senses reaching out. None of the usual senses told him anything. The sounds of the others moving, breathing, talking, were suddenly deafening: the whisper of an exhale, the ear-shattering gentle shift of paws on stone.

Scents overwhelmed his brain. The odor of dog-fur, and the slight rancid stink of sheepswool. The damp odor of the rock, and the faint, distant smells of old blood and scorched stone. The smell, distant, like a pale color, of old bones lingering on Max, and wafting, too, on the faint wind somewhere not-too-distant.

The temperature, the touch, of the air, every caress across his fur, his nose, his eyes, smothering. The damp, metallic taste of Polaris on the air.

Every facet and flash of light, the glow of the Spire and how it cascaded over one side of Max, half-illuminating him: each glint on every hair.

But past that--beyond all that--came a sense that something was wrong. It was not, exactly, magic; Deli's physical senses had no way of detecting that. And there was, too, nothing to find that he could not already sense. No tunnel, or hidden alcove. But there was... still something wrong, something undeniably strange, something unsettling and off and discordant.

It came from the oily stone around Max's neck, and even to Deli's questionably-ordered mind, it would scream of danger.

"Nice to meet you!" He replied. Qisziux briefly wondered if everyone had such short, boring names- it seemed like everyone else he'd met did. Qisziux shook his head in response to the Snail's question, "Its not a normal name, it's a lot better than a normal one!" he replied, clearly proud of his choice of name.

The lizard's attention quickly shifted from Oka to Max. "I'm not squishy!" He argued, as if talking louder would help him win the argument. "I don't like you!" He declared, "You're stinky!" He briefly glanced at Oka, to see if they'd agree with him.

"Oh." Oka said. Oka wasn't sure how talking usually went, put simply. They hadn't really met anyone. Other than that one strange tree. They were starting to feel like finding something to graze. Or finding something pretty. Their eyes caught the glint on the black stone tied around Max's neck.

"I'm... cute? I--me friend?" Oka said. This group of gembound were introducing a lot of new concepts to the snail. They weren't exactly sure what friend entailed. Or what it was. But now Max's paw was reaching for Oka before they could react. Oka's eyes shrunk back into nubs, wrinkles billowing out. The dry paw felt awkward against Oka's slimy skin at first, and Max still had that eerie scent about them. But as time went on...it felt kinda soothing. They leaned into it. "It's nice." They admitted.

Max made Oka feel uneasy...but that stone was pretty. Would that black go well with their shell? Qisziux called Max stinky though. And then looked at them. Should they say so? Well, if Qisziux thought it was okay, then it must be. They were his age. They'd probably seen more gembound than them. Yeah. They'd go along with it.

"You are stinky. You smell scary." They confessed. " But I like your stone!" Oka added on quickly, as if trying to bury their former statement.

They also really wanted to touch the stone. But this group was also very noisy. But...maybe if Oka befriended Max, they could touch the stone. Maybe Max would let them put the pretty stone on their shell!

Sword came up to his side, and Crown huffed softly in greeting, knocking his tail once against his brother's poor rump. Otherwise, the lamb watched attentively, ears flickering back mildly and almost bashfully as he was greeted by Max and introduced. A petite hoof scuffed against the ground. Pale eyes averted. He shuffled closer to his father. There were a lot more Gembound here than expected - even a talking snail.

"This is where you died," said the Black dog, and Crown was distracted enough from his anxieties to lift his head, peer out across the whole of Polaris. Without asking any sort of permission, his chin rested on a wrinkled shoulder, then his hooves. Essentially standing on the poor dog's back, he looked ahead. Scorched remains lay everywhere - mere remnants of all of the destruction Black had described.

Somehow, he'd expected - "no bones?"

Everything left bones when they died, right? Prey did.
