pumpkin did not know how to hunt. he really didnt.


when he was growing up he didn't get to learn, the merchant just threw food at them and basic enrichment and that was it.

he decided that he had had enough of the berries and plants that honestly just made him feel sick.

flying through the vast expanse of pegasus, he tried to find some form of prey. he didn't exactly know how, but its worth it to try.

after a bit of mindless flying, pumpkin barely managed to spot the scuttling of a small mouse. or atleast, something that looked like one. it was hard to tell, given how bright everything seemed to bee in caves like this.

he swooped down, landing on a branch higher up. he took a deep breath, getting ready to pounce. or... swoop. dive? he didnt know.

he moved to fly down gracefully, but instead, completely tripped and stepped on a wing on the way down. he crashed into the dirt below. the sound of cracking branches and crunching leafs filled the area around him, but... for some reason the mouse seemed otherwise unbothered. it actually seemed to look around AWAy from pumpkin, just. absolutely oblivious.

he didn't really have time to question it though, so he got up, willing to try again.

pumpkin didn't know what he was supposed to do now that his initial plan had failed, but hey! it was something. he brushed himself off, and just resorted to doing what anyone else would do.

totally and completely winging it.

with a skip and a hop, pumpkin proceeded to-

completely fuck up once again.

tripping on a rolling twig, instead of stabbing the mouse with his beak, he completely rammed into it and got the shit bit out of him. the mouse was finally smart enough to realize there was a threat and pumpkin lay there taking a beating. "ow-! fuck-! STOP THAT!" he squawked. the mouse skittered off in fear, leaving pumpkin sore and bleeding from a few of the bite wounds.

he groaned loudly at this. he did not like this.

pumpkin just needed to get something else. maybe something just a little smaller and alot more dumb. because obviously thats all he would be able to take credit for.

he flew upward again into the branches, hoping he'd be able to spot some mice wandering in the branches.

flying through, he finally was able to spot a mouse lounging, seemingly asleep, in a branch below. he swooped down silently to another branch, smiling triumphantly. ok, he's got this!

ok. he's gotta plan this out.

silent swoop and completely throwing himself into it as a combo could work! separately they didn't, but together they might!

he leapt down, and SOMEHOW MANAGED TO DO SOMETHING.

HE RAMMED HIMSELF INTO THE MOUSE BEAKFIRST, getting a decent wound in but not quite enough to kill it, but tumbling them both to the forest floor. it'd take alot of effort to keep this fucker down.

pumpkin was almost losing his mind at the fact he actually did that, but he quickly realized, as the mouse began to struggle, he'd need to find a way to absolutely just kill it right now or else he'd just go without a meal, he's not doing this again for a while.

he looked around, and spotted a particularly sharp, broken branch lying on the ground, several smaller, spiked branches rising from it.

perfect.

as he struggled with the mouse, getting bit several time again, he somehow managed to drag it over to the branch.

with a shit ton of effort, he managed to fly partially into the air, enough to haphazardly shove the mouse onto one of the spiked branches, losing grip and firmly shoving it down before he could.

HE'D.. HE'D DONE IT! the mouse quickly went limp and he did a little, adorable, happy excitement dance in celebration. and then remember he has to eat it now. so he got to that.

long story short he nearly has a tastegasm bc eating meat after weeks of horrible berries is honestly like heaven to him.
