It should not have survived—Why?—the splitting of nerves, capillaries, itself. The third minute of breathing (where it could) pure ozone had ticked by; its world had gone dark. Yet, Alpha'd seized awake and lay here.

Here being curled halfway around the chrysoberyl, at a distance. Its left flank was an arm-length away from the dull facets. The vast majority of its undersides were slicked with muck. Despite that, the putrid lime glow of its quills stole through. All four eyes remained glassy, however—focused on some faraway point rather than the chrysalis it was staring right at. A thousand yard stare was laid upon it.

Magicka ebbed through its stone. As it wove through cracked ribs and reinforced them, the monstrous hybrid grunted through a wince. Teeth stained carmine gnashed against one another with familiar intensity. At least, this time, it could release easily.

Easily.

The all-important question pinged back: Why would you... ?

This... apparently insignificant fleck of a creature—of the same species as what had been used to make Ruby-Beta, Garnet-Delta—had approached it. The orthoclase belatedly realized that it'd seen her before even the Hunt. She'd been a yowling cacophony amid the acts. None of the judges had offered her placement, it didn't think. Whatever few days the Olympics had passed through were a total haze, though. One could guess at the reason why—off track, right.

She'd marched up to it with nothing but (what it perceived to be) unshakeable confidence and a promise of death. It'd coursed through her entire body, and the idiot beast fell for it with a snap of teeth. Her magic had persisted even after half of her being had been ripped apart—Alpha ran a scarred tongue over its teeth. If she'd just stopped, it would have let her go, thrown her down, done something to incapacitate her without killing her outright. Its own words echoed at it, "... a waste of something's being alive."

Back when it'd said that, it hadn't the means to give that statement any gravity.
