Maelstrom

"Even the devil was once an angel."

The first breath.

It was raspy. Raspy, cold, and, to a degree, resembled the scratch of nails against a chalkboard. Her eyes snapped open, a bright, shining orange against the gloomy colors of the cave. And almost immediately what would be later considered a rather characteristic smile split her features. Breath. Breath and her entrance into the world. Ohh, it was so exciting. Thrilling, even. Horrifyingly gratifying.

With a monstrous shriek the feline thrust out her hind-legs, orange eyes glimmering with an unreasonable menace. The crystal shattered, it shattered and tiny fragments and shards exploded into the air, before at last twirling down to land on the platform of stalagmites. Unbeknownst to her, a shard tore through the atmosphere, before bouncing itself back downwind....

And straight into her face.

It was the little bridge between her eyes, the bump of her melanistically-furred nose. Oh, but she loved it. She loved the pain that misted immediately through her, loved and relished the droplets of blood that streamed down from the lower rims of her eyes. She didn't know why, but she loved each and every one of the moments nevertheless. The preliminarily sinister grin enlarged, revealing an array of sharp, salivating fangs. Ropes of spittle hung down from the upper canines, spattering the inside of the crystalis.

She sprung out, and the blood spewed everywhere. But again, she enjoyed it. Enjoyed every split zeptosecond.

And the edges of her tongue poked out, spindling sideways in an attempt to absorb the blood, the blood that had continued to flow down from between her eyes.

it is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.

Another sound of cracking, Yew found herself wondering when so many chrysalis decided to appear within Polaris. Perhaps it was that she never.... really left the forested Eridanus. Yew found herself wanting to go back, but the smell of blood caught her nose, and she wondered if it was the child that came from the sound. Especially with the screeching noises that came before it - someone had just broken out of their living-hole that was a chrysalis.

Some may call her caution superfluous, but Yew found being cautious and being slow made it easier to see what was coming before it came. She could see the danger before it found her, even if it didn't work the best in the past. Namely, the scars and torn feathers that lined her body. Those feathers would never grow back, and they never did back then either.

Spotting the kid who was.... Running around with dropplets of blood on their tiny cub face, Yew wondered if the kid had been injured by someone. Though there was no one else there but the two of them.

Another without family? Though, Yew supposed not every gembound would have a family. She didn't anymore.

"You're going to get hurt more if you keep doing that." Yew voiced out, quietly. What if the child ran facefirst into one of the cave walls?

Though before her warning rang through, the kid stopped to lick the blood from her face.

"It would be easier to wash it in water." The wolf-bird near-muttered.
