Vargas fell back, back into the role of observer, silent and unobtrusive. He slipped into the background, going still; he offered no interruption in the form of word or movement.

His mind, of course, was working. He observed Garnet-Delta, and he observed Chaos-Four. And he judged both.

The former: efficient, deadly, moving straight to the point. A point that would assess and, if necessary, teach: this much was clear to him. Good. Chaos-Four: obedient, though Vargas hoped it would show its share of violence sooner or later. It was imitating, already; that was an excellent sign. It showed intelligence. And it was moving for the kill without hesitation.

He was pleased.

But for now he didn't interrupt. There were more lessons to come; his only task now was to watch, unless something--some mistake, or some omission--dictated that he interject.

As the Nightwing sprung, clumsy and eager to kill like a starved hound released from a cage for the first summer hunt, the Overseer sat back on its haunches. The rat struggled against its magic, and Garnet-Delta held it tighter, not wanting it to bolt away before Chaos-Four landed upon it. Oh, the blood in its body surged, pumped furiously by a terrified little heart, but the body no longer belonged to the mind.

The terror of the skies and seas had descended upon the rat. Garnet-Delta had hunted many rats in its life, and it knew that a swift kill-- a bite to the neck or otherwise snapping of the spine-- was needed to prevent injury. The Overseer would have to teach Chaos-Four the intricacies later, especially if it was to take on larger prey. At this point in the story, if the rat had not managed outrun Chaos-Four, nor slip free from the beast's talons, flight would turn to fight. It would bite and scratch, if only it could.

Amused, Garnet-Delta indulged the helpless rat that could not so much as scream, entire body puppeted by the whims of a cat playing God: the rat's body twisted, limbs flailing uselessly, and the Overseer had it snap its teeth in the general direction of Nightwing, drawing close but not too close to flesh. The struggle began, and oh, Garnet-Delta had it thrash furiously, feigning a furious fight.

All the more for Chaos-Four to feel proud when it lay dead at its feet, yes?

"Watch its teeth," Garnet-Delta warned, sounding quite serious, "kill it quick, before it bites you." How Chaos-Four decided to kill the rat, well... It was only fair to give the newborn some creative freedom. It would learn to paint its own glorious, chaotic mess best if left to its own devices. Pointers could come later.

Any reaction from the rat gets a snarl- one large forelimb striking out to stun the creature, to pin it, and the snapping of teeth gets a reciprocal baring of Nightwing's own, instinct causing them to pull only slightly back before before tilting it's blunt head to the side, like a falcon eyeing it's prey from meters above the ground.

A quick strike of it's head, then, like a viper, as it had folded it's body behind itself at it's landing, and so the draconinc beast is able to bite down into the back of the rat, aiming by instinct for the back of it's neck. The sudden flood of sensory input, of new textures under their teeth and tongue, the taste of fur and dirt and blood causes their magic to flare in excitement, and dark fog to roll from it's mouth as it shakes it's head like a terrier.

The magic backfires, causing reality to fade from it's sight, and the whispers get louder, things flickering in the corners of it's vision, some back and forth lashing of the head like it had seen something and was attempting to strike it.

As the rat falls still, either stunned or the whiplash having killed it, or even the initial bite, it calms down, panting heavily from the new exertion, the magic surge. Now lucid it turns, and it's gaze trails over to the Overseer.

One step, then another towards the cat like being... then, it sets the rat down before the Overseer, as if asking what to do with it.

No words, simply unnerving rumbles.

Vargas observed, and when the black smoke roiled forth from Nightwing's jaws, he leaned forward in wide-eyed anticipation. But... nothing happened; in fact, it seemed a rather disappointing sudden lack of anything supernatural whatsoever. It most definitely was not chaotic.

A flicker of his own senses, reaching out to taste the air, and he sensed it: a faint backfire, something that should have worked that had folded in on the creation itself, tumbling into its own mind. Well-... it was a work in progress; that's what training was for. That's what practice was for. "Something backfired," he told Garnet-Delta quietly, acidic eyes cutting toward it.

But the creature recovered well enough, killing its prey in the end, carrying it toward its Overseer--and bar his quiet interjection, Vargas continued to simply watch.
