The harpy had left Leo a number of days ago- and had checked room to room, searching for something they were looking for but not... quite finding it until today. The bark of the trees is rough and strong under their hands, barely scoring under their claws. Perfect. If they're able to find a recently dead tree, they could use some rocks to split the trunk and peel out the still soft wood from within, knowing how it will dry into tough, strong rope when processed.

Sure, the mist leaves something to be desired, what for being able to actually SEE the things they look for, and hiding the scampering of hooves and chirping of insects... which... gives them another idea. Some of the deer in other caves just look so fluffy...

Wait, NO! focus! a shake of their head, and they push their hair from their face.

Now first, a newly fallen tree- caves know they can't tear one down alone.

Perfect- a perfect tree! A jump of glee and some dancing in place, before headed to the tree and feeling it over- they can't feel any soft spots, as far as they know. but.. rot can always be an inside thing.

Scoring a divot with their blade, the harpy digs out the hole a bit more before taking a deep inhale, clearing their through, and coughing into the hole- some sort of light being the goal. It doesn't come out- in fact, it seems to stick in their throat, and to their mouth, and several minutes of struggling to clear their airway fully and swiping at their face with feathers and claws takes place before a very frazzled, very sticky, VERY much not going to admit this happened looking harpy scowls and kicks some wet soil over the remains of what they tried.

After that they hop up to go climb the fallen tree, and feel around to find where to score some lines with their claws into the bark between the plates... somewhere to drive in a cracked, broken edged stone and split the log. Thinking, thinking...

Here seems... feasible?

It's a slightly wider split between the ridges of bark, and they hop down to find some sort of broken stone for their task... So much a difficult one that they occasionally wind up on hands and knees feeling around for what they want. Something strong, sort of like the speckled rocks, nothing layered-feeling or pale colored, they're soft.

I know this is short but I can't do anything until birdie gets a crackin' rock soooo... sorry.

They find an appropriate looking rock- all they need to do is heat, and crack it... so back to their divot they go.

A deep breath, and they set the stone near where they had once dug. They dig it up again, scowling as they flick away globules of failed firespit and dirt, plant detritus and yuck...

Then try again.

Another deep breath, and they go to fill the trench with the flammable gel once again from their chest.

Once again, it catches and fails- watery, sour... a sad goober from their mouth and they spit it off to the side.

And once again... they're determined to get this magic to work.

"STUPID- fish floppin scale sticking toe smashing-!"

Their version of colorful language, they swear, and with a rather gross inhale and snort, they try again to spit something flammable into the hole.

A gross success!

A great sucess, given the amount, and Ren sets the stone in the pyrogel with a smug smile.

Now to ignite it- set their feathers on their arms to a char, and drop it into the hole. Get light for trying to carve a rut in the bark for the stone, and also heat the stone to crack.

Win- win, right? Makes sense in their head at least.

After a few moments, the heat causes the stone to glow, and then they use their talons to flip out one split shard from the pit. Perfect.

To the score they'd been bearing in with their talons into the tree, they settle the wedge... then go fetch another rock and lift it above their head. Several successful strikes will be needed to split the log to any functional degree, but here we go-

"Pluck," they mutter, and re-settle the wedge to try again- another heft of the stone, and they bring it down at full force.

This process is going to take a long time with my luck these last few rolls, but I will bribe the gods with cookies if I can get this done tonight. Please...

Another strink of colorful swears, and they try again- mind you, none of their cussing is actual cuss words. Very shakesperian in their insults towards the tree, it's progeny, and any animals it has fostered over it's life span as they keep-

Okay... after that raging bout, they calm down and observe what progress they've made... scooting down the log, they continue to try and expand that split that started up top- settling the stone wedge into the crack, and then-
