Thomas had found his way back to Polaris after his journey through the caves. He was returning from Fornax where he had met and socialized with many other cervids. It was a time of learning and developing relations for him. But now that he was in Polaris, the place where all his curiosities began, he was ready to know more. The elk knew he was now two cycles old. The bulge on the top of his head was finally pushing threw; a red stone encased in a white crystal shell was making its appearance. Thomas knew these were his antlers, but he also knew that what he was seeing was his gem.
Finally.
The elk stopped near the center of Polaris. He looked around as far as the darkness would allow him too. The Spire caught his attention first; ah, the place where he had first discovered magic. He was more knowledgeable and wise than he had been when he learned of gembound's inner powers. Thomas was no less than thrilled to finally be learning something new. Well, at least that's how he put it.
Thomas had returned to Polaris to do what he wanted to achieve during his first journey with the dog Gabriel. He was here to give names to unnamed things.

Thomas wandered towards the edge of Polaris where a thick patch of glowing blue mosses lay. He stared down at them with a close, watchful eye. The shade and brightness of the glow remained the same no matter how long the elk observed. Grunting, he move his nose closer to the mosses to see what they smelt like. Nothing but the aroma of regular moist mosses.. Growing frustrated, Thomas decided to try something out. He raised his head back into the air and closed his eyes in focus. He began to think of nothing but the magic that flowed within him, and with a deep breath, he began to glow.
Thomas opened his eyes. His body felt like it was being warmed internally. His nose, eyes, inner ear and tail glowed the brightest. Around his emerging antlers, hooves, belly and rear also let off light, but only a small amount. Once again the elk lowered his head towards the mosses to see if the color would change.
The small space between Thomas' nose and the moss seemed to be glowing green. It was faint, but with a watchful eye he was able to spot it. "Yes!" he cheered as he jumped back from the mix of colors. With a joyous look, the elk began to ponder a name. "Now what can I call that experience." He paused. "And better yet, what names can I give to the blue glow and the green glow?"

Thomas stared down at the blue moss. "A name, a name, a name," he continuously chanted under his breath. He didn't take his eyes off the moss for a single second. The elk entered a focused, trance-like state. All he did was watch the moss; watch it glow, watch it move. He inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly.
"Lumue."
The word rolled off his tongue smoothly and floated through his ears like music. Thomas had named the blue glow from the moss lumue. He grinned from what seemed like ear to ear. The elk removed his gaze and stared upwards. He looked towards the roof, where everything was dark and he could barely see anything. Thinking he'd follow the same rule for green as he did for blue, he spoke the new word.
"Lumeen."
Thomas felt a wave of excitement overcome him. He was finally creating words for things that had no name. Soon everything in the cave would have a title, whether all gembounds respected it or not. He did not care.

"Lumue, lumeen, lumue, lumeen," Thomas chanted to himself. He raised his head up from the moss and looked as far as the darkness of Polaris would allow him to see. From where he stood, he couldn't spot any other glowing colors. This frustrated the elk, and so he stomped his hoof and began storming closer to The Spire.
"I suppose I could give name to the orange glow that comes from me when I use torchlight," he said. Thomas began to focus on his naming pattern. Within moments he had a name for orange glow.
"Lumange."
His frustrated stomps came to an end as he now began to skip across the stone. He chanted the three words over and over again in a chorus of sound. Thomas was proud of himself; the first time he had ever truly felt that way about himself. "Lumue, lumeen, lumange, lumue, lumeen, lumange!"
Thomas knew that in due time he would have a name for all colors that glowed. Red, yellow, purple and pink were the next to come. He had certainly never seen anything glow pink before, but he still wanted to give it a name. If pink existed, then that meant that it surely glowed somewhere else. Or so he believed.

Thomas let the words roll off his tongue one after another, over and over again. "Lumue, lumeen, lumange, lumue, lumeen, lumange." Every now and again he would think of another word and add it to the list. "Lumple! Lumue, lumeen, lumange, lumple, lumue, lumeen, lumange, lumple." Over and over again he said it, and if anyone were near they would think he was absolutely bonkers. Which, in reality, he kinda was.
But as Thomas walked and added lumed to his vocabulary, he began to feel and itch under his skin. He halted and looked around him to see if any gembounds were near and causing him pain. There was no one within sight, and so he began to panic. The elk began to stomp his hooves and wave his head in all directions. The pain began to target his head where his growing antlers stuck a foot or two from his scalp.
Thomas wanted to scream when the ache hurt the most. But, soon after it faded and he became relaxed. He became calm and stood tall again, looking around. Whatever that was, he had no idea. But on top of his head, around the base of his antlers, the fur and flesh were seared to the gem.

Thomas was almost at the base of the Spire when he heard a low screeching sound coming from beyond. Now distracted from his mission, he began to scan around Polaris in attempt to find the source of the sound. But, no matter how hard he tried, he saw nothing. Confused and now dazed, he turned back to look at the Spire. He attempted to focus back on his mission by humming the word for a blue glow under his breath. "Lumue."
Thomas lowered himself to the ground at the base of the Spire. It had been a while since he last slept, and his growing body was nearly begging to be let to sleep. He opened his mouth in a yawn and curled his head around his chest and front legs. He continuously repeated the words under his breath as he attempted to drift off into a sleep. Perhaps this would be good for him.

Thomas chose to ignore the sound and rested his head back down onto the ground. He released a huff of breath and began to think of one thing; sleep. Content with himself and his advancements, Thomas believed sleep would come easy to him.
And boy was he ever wrong. His head shot back up into the air as a loud clang came from the distance. Now annoyed, Thomas shook his head and grunted to himself. He just wanted rest; something that didn't come to him often enough. He laid his head back down and began taking slow, deep breaths and long exhales. Sleep would be his.
