The feathery thing had been happily feasting on whatever the substance in the little bluish cage thing was. He knew nothing about what was going on, but that did not stop instinct. He lived happily in his chrysalis, not caring about a thing or a what or a who. Or himself. He didn't know what he was. What his name was. He had no clue what life was.

Until his food supply ran out.

Then the tiny feather thing cared. He cared very much. He used his mouth to hit the chrysalis as hard as he could, determined to escape. A small crack. The little thing attacked again, the crack growing bigger. Happy with himself, he kept attacking the hard shell, until finally it broke open and he was free. The creature shook himself, and tried to stand, but failed. Determined with his new pride at escaping, he tried again. Aha! Success. The little thing opened his mouth and let out a primal sound of joy, but words mixed in too.

"Yeecah!" It screeched. Wait, that sounded like something. The creature tried again, trying to make a word.

"Yeac!" It tried again, it's voice softer. No good.

"Yeah!" It did it! It said a word! The little feather ball didn't know what a word was yet, but it made one! And it made sense. Kind of. But he was proud of himself for it.

Not far from where the young owl emerged its chrysalis, another stone filled with life was about to break. It was a pale green, smoky stone that seemed to radiate heat and energy. Inside the small cat slept, blissfully aware of the world outside. That was, until it kicked out with its leg, which hit the side of the crystal and cracked the surface.

Its eyes snapped open at the sound and as the fluid began to slowly leak out. It couldn't see anything beyond the walls of its cage, but as it took its first few breaths, it realized that the air was thin and was beginning to run out. It kicked out again, trying to break the crystal the same way it had done before. However, the crack did not widen at its attempts. Not realizing yet that it had claws, it scrabbled at the inside surface, becoming desperate to make its escape. But nothing it did would make it budge.

It began to cry out with whatever air it had left, hoping that someone would be able to hear its calls through the thin crack in the crystal.

The little feathery thing was busy teaching itself how to walk when cries came from a weird green rock thing. The newly hatched thing hopped over to the green rock, deciding the source of the screams was coming from there. It hadn't registered in his mind that it wasn't the green rock that was screaming, but the thing inside it, ready to hatch just as he did only a few minutes ago. Spotting a crack in the rock, the little creature became curious.

"Whhaaaa?" It tried to say. Speech was hard for it to come by. And then the little feathery thing thought questions. What was it? The answer came to his mind quickly. Barn owl. He was a barn owl! He had figured it out! Hopping up and down excitedly, the new owl gave a victory cry.

"Yes!" He shouted. Speech seemed to come more naturally now. Strange. And then, another thought. What was his name? The owlette realized that more cries for help were coming from the rock. He had only been hatched for a few minutes, but his brain growth was rapid, and he could connect thoughts and ideas faster and faster every second. He needed to break the green rock thing. There was already a crack, maybe he could start there.

Furiously pecking and scratching at the green rock egg thing, the baby owl tried his hardest to help whatever was in there. He couldn't let whatever was in the rock egg thingy die. Although he was newly hatched, he couldn't let it happen. He wouldn't allow it. Only minutes old, the owl's personality was beginning to emerge. He was already a seemingly selfless bird, but truly, that was his appearance. His motivation to help whatever was this egg rock was to really see what he could get out of it.

Protection, food, something. He wanted to get something out of this. Continuing his attack, he tried to break the green egg thing.

The little cat continued to cry and call as the air become thinner and tighter. It barely noticed when another creature appeared at the side of the chrysalis but certainly did notice when it started to peck at it. He stopped his caterwauling and instead began to scratch and scrabble at the crack just as the bird was attacking from the outside. After a few moments, the crack started to widen until, finally, they managed to break a hole wide enough for him to escape. He put away his claws and started to squeeze himself out of the gem, falling face flat on the ground.

Dazed and a little overwhelmed by the world that had just opened up to him, the cat sat on the ground for a moment, his head spinning. Once he had shook it out, he turned to the bird and dipped his head. It took a few moments for him to find his voice, but when he did, he immediately spoke. "Th-thank you, so much. I owe you my life."

The owlette screamed when a thing fell out in front of him. And then it thanked him.

"What thank you? What life?" The little owl asked, not sure what either of these things was. His brain could connect things, and he was self-aware, but he wasn't the best at speaking or manners or anything really, but he was just hatched and what could you expect? Though the brown thingy in front of him seemed much more developed a lot sooner. Maybe the little owl was slow. That didn't matter to him though.

"Ooohhh life..... Life good? We life, right?" It suddenly dawned on the owlette that they were alive. That they were prime examples of life. He knew it! Flapping his wings happily, the tiny owl gave a happy cry.

The newly hatched looked at the bird strangely. Did it not understand? When he had hatched, there was much he had understood. He understood what life was and that he had it. He understood what he was and what this thing was...kind of. What he didn't understand was what he was doing here. Was there a reason he hatched from the green crystal? Was there a reason he was now sitting here with this little bird in front of him? What was he supposed to do now?

He nodded at the bird figuring out what life was, slightly amused. Maybe he had figured it out sooner, but this was a learning experience. They would learn together. His eye caught the fluffy stuff covering the bird's body. It didn't look like what he had at all. He was so curious as to what it felt like. Without really thinking, he reached forward and carefully pawed at the stuff. It was soft and it tickled his pads. He giggled at the sensation. It was nice, but he wondered what it was called and why he didn't have it too.

Then he realized what exactly he was doing and retracted his paw quickly, averting his eyes with embarrassment. "Sorry," he stammered, "It looked really soft."

"Speech looks like this."

The owlette, who had not yet decided a name, and didn't care, was astounded by the weird creature in front of him who touched his...... what were they? Feathers! That's what they were.

"Feathers.... soft feathers?" The little boy offered. He wasn't quite sure what to do, so instead, he rubbed himself against the furry thing in front of him. The fur was kinda coarse, but it scratched an itch he had.

"You make itch go away..... What are you?"

As the cat's moments in the world stretched longer and longer, his senses began to develop rapidly. He could feel the soft feathers of the bird, he could smell the damp air charged with energy, he could taste, well, not much, he could see clearer and clearer, and, most of all, all the sounds began filling his ears. More specifically, sound pounded into his right ear. All of a sudden, the amount of noise became so overwhelming that he cringed and stepped back, a paw shooting up to cover it. However, it wouldn't budge.

Confused, he pawed at it some more, wondering what was going on with his ear. Every impact his own limb made against his head banged loudly in his ear which caused his head to spin with the force. He turned to the little owl, at a loss of what to do. "Hey, I just..." he cringed again as his own voice seemed so much louder, just on the right side. He lowered his voice as he continued. "I need a quick favor. Can you just..." he turned his head to show his ear to the bird, "can you tell me if it looks different then the other?"

"Listen to my whisper."
Hear my thoughts.

The owl watched as the creature in front of him smacked himself in the head. It was so funny, the owl had to stifle a giggle. Looking at the fuzzy thing's ear, he saw it was green and shiny and kinda clear-ish. The owlette, curious, pecked lightly at it.

"Green. Made of rock?"The owlette suggested. He didn't know what it was, but it was cooollll.

When the owlette pecked at his ear, he flinched as the sound reverberated through his skull. He jerked away, a paw raising to touch it to make sure the owl's words were true. It certainly did feel like a rock. Maybe a gem. But why was his ear a gem? Was it supposed to be like that? He wondered what would happen if he smashed it or pull it out. He had a feeling that it might hurt. But he didn't know if it was natural or not. What if it was bad? What if it would kill him?

He started to get scared, his other ear flattening against his head. His breathing increased and he pawed at the ground. He didn't know what to do and he didn't know why he was so scared. Everything was so loud, his head was starting to spin. He was shaking, he was hyperventilating. He barely noticed the owl anymore. The storm, the storm above. It was so loud, the thunder crashed in his ear and the rumbling was so intense.

He looked up at the strange storm circling above their heads. A storm. That was a storm? But what was a storm? Did they all look so terrifying? Was that why he was scared? "W-what is that?!"
