Blue had returned to the tunnel, the horrible tunnel. The one where he almost lost Blackberry. The one where he got her back. The one where they started their reign of vengeance. He loved it and he hated it. The moose laid down, letting Blackberry slide from his back, and then he set about his next task.
He searched for the material for a nest, trying to make a comfortable place for Blackberry to rest. She had been hurt in her previous fight, and it pained Blue to see her like that. The moose had gathered what feathers were left from the blue bird Blackberry had killed when she first emerged (because he figured she'd appreciate resting on the feathers of that she had killed), soft mosses, and whatever else he could find. She had been bitten by that snake, and she had ended up in the same state he had found her in. Though he got the plants to her faster this time and the effects weren't as bad, she still needed to rest.
Blue had prepared the nest in a little crook by the wall, where it was a tad warmer than everywhere else and more hidden. No one needed to know that Blackberry could be weak. Because she couldn't But others might perceive her as weak if they saw her right after a battle. Blue returned to Blackberry, nudging her back up onto his back and pacing her in the comfy nest of mosses and feathers. Then he settled by it, waiting for her to wake up.
Just like he always did.

Blackberry could distantly hear scuffling and movement, could faintly feel the air moving around her as Blueberry carried her to the tunnel where she had gone through hell. The plants had managed to go down her throat, but her body was still wracked with pain from the amount of venom the snake had managed to get into her body. As she was laid gently down on the feathers, she felt a familiar scent hit her nose. It was the bird that she had killed, the first one.
The memory of the kill gave her energy. She groaned as her consciousness began to resurface and she began to feel again. Her entire body was sore and her neck was laced with intense pain. She couldn't move most of her muscles, but she managed to blink open her eyes.
The world was hazy and not quite right. She blinked some more, as if trying to clear it out, but it did nothing. Her head was spinning and she tried to move, but it only caused her muscles to cramp even more. She gasped and shivered, spluttering as anger started to fill her. This had happened again? She was trying to avoid getting herself caught in this situation, paralyzed and in so much pain.
She then realized that Blueberry was sitting next to her. She could faintly hear the familiar sound of his breathing and his weight next to her. She wanted to move her head to look at him, but she knew that she couldn't. So, instead, she just spoke, her words slurred. "Blueberr...wazgoinon...where..." She couldn't really think much more beyond that as the effort to think made her head spin.

Blueberry waited. And he waited. He watched Blackberry intently, thinking about what he had said last to her. He had confessed. But she never heard him. And maybe that was a good thing. Blue wasn't sure if she could even love. And he knew she wouldn't accept the feelings. SHe'd probably drive him away.
But Blue soon heard Blackberry mumble slurred, pained words. He cringed. She must've be in so much pain. "Blackberry! I brought you someplace safe. The tunnel where you killed the bird. Your safe now. I gave you the plants. And you fif it. You killed the snake. I'm so proud. She was small, but she was quite the foe with her venom." Blue lied through gritted teeth. He hated having to lie to Blackberry, but he'd never let her fight the little cobra again. He couldn't. It was too dangerous.
Blue turned his head to look at Blackberry in the eyes. She looked like she was in a lot of pain, and it killed him. She didn't deserve this. She deserved so much better. He hated that snake. He might even go off and kill it himself, just so they could never chance Blackberry dying again.
No. He couldn't Blackberry would wonder about him, or so he hoped. He liked to think Blackberry held a place for him, a place where he was special. Probably not though. Oh well. He had her company and he would never fight her. And that was enough.

Blackberry sort of registered Blueberry's words, specifically about the part where she killed the snake. Good. She had at least gotten something out of the fight. Nothing really came to her, she was too dizzy and too out of it to think. She was about to respond again, but then everything went dark again and she passed out.
-----
It was a few hours later when Blackberry came to again. The world was still hazy and spinning, but her muscles had finally relaxed and her breathing was easier. Her eyes slid open and she was met with Blueberry's dark brown fur. She blinked lazily, her mind completely empty. What was she doing here again? Why was she lying next to Blueberry?
But then she remembered everything. It sort of came through slowly and she accepted it oddly calm. She had been bitten by the snake but she killed the snake. And, as this realization came to her, she felt the sliver of skin she had ripped away still in her clutches. She looked down. The white skin was caked with blood, but she could still recognize it. Her trophy. Too bad she hadn't gotten that beautiful blue gem, but this was probably good enough.
She wanted to put it on her necklace, but she was tired. She would do it later. Besides, Blueberry would probably force her down and make her rest if she tried to move too much.
Blueberry was really always there for her, wasn't he? No matter how much she hated everything, no matter how cruel or thoughtless she was to him, he would always come back, he would always be there. No matter how long she was gone, he would wait for her.
The emotion that had tugged at her periodically since her second hatching came back again, but this time she didn't stop it. Why not? She had no one to hate here. She looked up at Blueberry with curious eyes. What made him do this? She was a monster, she knew this and accepted this. But he was not...or, at least, he wasn't always. He was sweet and kind and caring. Why did he follow her and protect her and kill for her? She stared at the moose's face, not quite realizing that she had said none of this out loud.

Blue waited for a response, but he got none. Blackberry was already asleep. He settled and got ready to watch over her, to make sure she slept okay. To protect her.
-------
A few hours later Blue heard rustling. But he was getting sleepy. His eyes snapped open from their half-shut state as he realized Blackberry was moving. That was good, right? Blue turned to face her, smiling.
"Blackberry... you're awake. How are you feeling?" He asked softly, not wanting to be too loud. He didn't know if her head hurt, but he didn't want to risk hurting her. No, he'd never hurt her. Not intentionally. She could be ripping out his gem, his very life essence, and he wouldn't fight back.
Oh, what that goose did to this moose.
Blue stared at her. She was so much different now, but it wasn't bad. She was scarier looking, but it added to their look. Their. Maybe? No. It wasn't their look. It was her look. Blue was just a sidekick of sorts. But weren't sidekicks for heroes? That made him a henchman. Which was just as good. As long as he could be around Blackberry.

Blackberry stared at Blueberry and blinked with confusion. It took a moment for her to coherently put together the words he had spoken into a sentence. And it took a moment longer for her to put together words of her own. "I feel like a snake bit me," she replied, bluntly. She was still in the process of waking up and didn't really realize that she should have come up with a better answer. However, she decided that her next move was to get up, for some reason. She was compelled to stand.
She raised herself from her lying position and wobbled unsteadily to her feet. As she did, the world span even more and her head pounded. Once she was finally in a standing position, she felt very very strange. As if she were floating without the need for wings. In reality, she was really tottering about unsteadily, only half recovered from the insane amount of venom.
Eventually, she bumped into Blueberry and managed to stop her spinning as the world began to fall back into place. As the blood rushed normally through her body, she started to see and process things better. She stepped back and looked at Blueberry, still not really receiving more then the strange emotion flooding her body. She tilted her head strangely, her eyes oddly calm and composed. She took note of how tired Blueberry looked. Had he been awake the whole time she was sleeping?"You waited," she commented, simply. "You do that a lot...why? You could have gone to sleep or something."

Blue held back a laugh when Blackberry gave hger answer. She was so unintelionally sarcastic it was funny. However, all humor he found in the situation vanished as Blackberry stood, concern replacing the humor in the moose's eyes.
But she was fine. She tottered for a few seconds. but steadied herself. Blue let out a breath he didn't even know he was holding. He was relieved she was recovering so quickly.
Blue was surprised by Blackberry's next words though. She sounded so... so caring. It was unlike her. But Blue went with it."I know. But I wanted to make sure that you healed okay. I wanted to make sure that you didn't need anything. Because.... because...." Blue started, but he faded out. It was easier to tell her when Blackberry was asleep. When she was awake, it felt like the biggest obstacle he had ever faced, and he didn't know what to do. So instead, he just left it there.
Blue looked down, too embarrassed to look at Blackberry. She would reject him, he was sure of it. But he couldn't help but have hope. Maybe, just maybe, somewhere under her murderous and sadistic personality, deep under, there was apart of her that cared. Maybe.

Blackberry didn't take her eyes off Blueberry, her confusion overriding everything she was trying to get back as she recovered. Any anger or rage or passion for violence that was beginning to rise as she regained her senses was crushed under a feeling that she could only describe as knowing. She heard distant voices in her ear, as if her brain was pointing her to exactly what she needed to know. "It's okay Miss. You're gonna be fine. In fact, you're gonna be great. You're doing great." "I'm happy to help Miss." "I gotta be strong like you." "Blackberry... I would always wait for you. From now til' the end of time."
She stared at Blueberry, the silence after his last sentence seeming to last a lifetime. But she could see it in his eyes as he looked away. He was embarrassed. He was worried. She understood. She was loud and furious and full of hate. That was what she cared about. He was scared that that was the only thing he cared about.
But did she? Did she care about anything else? She at first wasn't sure she knew the answer to that question. She never had time to think about it. Or, at least, never gave herself time to think about it because there was so much else to do. Like murder and destroy. But now that she was thinking about it, she knew that answer. No doubt.
"I know," she responded. "You don't have to say it."
Without saying anything else, she leaned her head down, the gem mostly hidden underneath her new growths vibrating with energy. She raised a claw and touched the sliver that was poking out. The magic surged into her claw and she carefully peeled away the piece painlessly. It wasn't much, with her weak ability to use magic and the bit that was even there, but it was something. With the tiny piece of her gem in her claw, she held it out to Blueberry and looked up at him expectantly. Did she need to say words?

Blue watched. Even though his head was down, he still saw. He heard her words. She knew, and she didn't hate him for it. She knew, and instead of clonking him over the head, or leaving, or honking and screaming at him like he expected, he head a small almost smooth crack, and watched.
He watched as Blackberry held out part of her stone. And Blue couldn't help but grin like a fool. She didn't hate him. She may not have returned the feelings. But she knew. And she understood. Blue nodded slightly, before he felt a surge of his own magick.
And he watched as the gem Blackberry held with the glow of his own. He had given a part of himself, and she had givel a part of herself. They had created something. And that was amazing. Blue looked into Blackberry's eyes, and they weren't filled with anything but adoration. She was so brave, so smart, so strong. She was good, underneath it all.
And that was all Blue needed.

Blackberry didn't take her eyes off of Blueberry as he let his magic flow into the gem. She only looked away to stare at the little blue gem, which glowed green for a second before fading away. But she knew it had worked. She turned towards the wall and carefully set it down against the mossy stone. She stepped back so that her quilled wings were brushing harmlessly against Blueberry's leg.
She wondered what the child would be like. What it be like her, crazy and psychotic, monstrous and violent? Or would it be like Blueberry, kind and gentle, caring and loyal? Or both? Or none? A strange desire tugged at her heart. She didn't want to leave it alone. It didn't feel right.
She reached up with a claw at scratched at her head, but the only sliver of her gem that was still exposed was now on the ground in front of her. It was completely underneath the growth. "I can't reach my gem anymore..." she murmured, expectantly.
