QUESTS/EVENTS
Torrential downpours cause localized flooding and many upset cats. Along with these frequent rain, from gentle drizzles to heavy rainfall, there seems to be a flux of Magicka drawn in particular to water sources. Occasional jet streams of warm air make narrower tunnels harder to navigate. On occasion, the rain intensifies, becoming howling storms with sleet or large hail. However, the temperatures overall are a little warmer, with snow and ice in temperate caves somewhat receding.

The diamond chrysalis is nested among a communion of mushrooms along the leading edge of a small chasm; it isn't the most impressive object, nor is the gap in the stonework, and there is no telling how long it has been sitting there. Perhaps the recent tumult in the caves has unearthed this tiny seed, leaving it to shine undaunted.
The mushrooms growing out of the wall nearby leave a dull glow beneath their exposed gills. One growth in particular casts a foul yellow-green light upon the soil, giving the gem crust an unsatisfying jaundice. As the shell is somewhat transparent in nature, the creature inside - this little life - trembles, writhes, wriggles, like a worm caught on a wire.
Before long a small fissure forms on the diamond's crown and as the creature stirs, the rock-like barrier cleaves to pieces, leaving the newborn in a state of transition. They are still asleep as they slip free of their moorings, not even waking when their slender little body collides with the ground in an eruption of dust.
Tyr was having a particularly energetic day as life moved on around him, flitting about from perch to perch to study anything he could get his claws on. A naive sense of curiosity had taken over the avian. Wings flexing, he flitted to the fleshy mushrooms along the cave walls, digging his talons into the meat of a particularly large cap that he'd had his eyes on for some time. The glow had attracted him and the primal part of his brain, one searching for safety in the natural darkness of the enclosed caves.
He didn't have much time for philosophical wondering as crackles sound below him, sending his senses on high alert. Whatever it was didn't sound particularly... Good. It reminded him of rocks crumbling from the walls of less stable part of caves- though, with as old as they looked, there weren't many of those to find. The crinkling below, though, held a faint music to his ears, drawing him to the edge to the fungi to peer down below him.
He should have known it wouldn't hold his weight, even with as light as he was. With an ugly squawk, he lost his balance and felt the flesh fall away- he was lucky to catch himself on his wings before slamming into the floor, drifting to a stop by the minuscule rock before him.
No- no, that wasn't a rock. There was something inside..? Was this like when he was young? Feathers flaring, Tyr hopped forward just as the chrysalis shattered, leaving him with a burst of motion back in surprise. Something dark, something earthy and black greets his eyes as he tries not to cower behind a wing, his gaze steeled directly on whatever it was.
... It was moving. So, it was a creature. Was it one with a gem? Swallowing his nerves, Tyr paced forward with hard stone meeting his spindly toes, wings held tight against his frame. Dark... With the yellow playing above it, Tyr tried to formulate a way to remember who they were. The dark of their coat stood out, a near-black yellowish tan formulating in his mind as he sidestepped to get a better look. Kicked up dust had begun to settle between them, forced out from under the creature.
It had fur. So, it wouldn't be able to fly, as far as he knew. Wait- it was rude to just stand there staring at whatever this was. Shaking his head and standing up taller, Tyr clacked his beak in thought before greeting with an air of concern. "You okay?" Short and simple. He hadn't realized that whoever this was wasn't fully conscious- or, at least, not yet.

One could argue that the interior of a chrysalis might be warm and comforting like a womb, ready to expel whatever mammalian creature lurked within. Others, such as this avian which had stumbled upon the diamond shell, might think it would be a claustrophobic experience - yet easily remedied with the cracking of the outer layer. These presumptions stem from an inherited knowledge; an idiosyncratic memory tying new creatures to old, giving beasts their intuition and instinct. It could be assumed just as easily that a pure gembound beast - something so corrupted by the caves that it could be classed as mythological or fantastical in nature - would have had their behaviors "factory reset" upon their promotion to a higher standard of living. In a creature such as that, built piecemeal and without a clear direction for its nature, does that mean they begin the chain anew?
These were complicated thoughts. Complicated, and far reaching, and utterly useless in the grand scheme of things, for they were dream-like in consistency and as accessible as any other facet to a dreamscape; but they persisted as the body slept. Facts and thoughts and wonderings, flitting in and out of a tiny mind like bursts of starlight - there, then gone. The creature was inconsistent even in the beginning: filled with a great many concepts as the magicka worked its way through their system, ephemeral, evaporating - and in the end, leaving the newborn with nothing but the prompt to open their eyes.
When they did finally open, they were a pair of large (by comparison to that wedge-shaped little head) brown pools of darkness; except for the glimmering of amber fire made to look almost golden with the sickly light nearby. The creature blinks slowly, feeling lashes sweep the air but not knowing what to call the feeling. They saw something shift in their periphery - blue, except they didn't know the word - and then there was an overwhelming pressure in their head as the blue thing spoke. Not to say they understood what talking was, nor to imply they understood what was said at them - but there was nothing, and then the booming something, which caused the newborn to squeal and squirm again. Awake, painfully so.
The greeting was met with confusion, with the squall of new lungs as they took their first breath of dry air, tasting the dust as it settled. Eyes, squeezed shut, flew open again and found themselves focusing on the shape - still hard to discern, but not nearly as blurry as the first glimpse - followed by a thought lingering from when they were asleep: What am I?

Tyr couldn't do much but watch as life breathed into the little mammal, their limbs moving and nerves firing for what was probably the first time in their life. The thought of newborn came to Tyr. This creature was new, undoubtedly so, from the discarded crystal egg to the startling reactions that came from the little mammal.
In response, all Tyr could do was cock his head this way and that, dark eyes scanning over the mammal before him. At least, he was pretty sure it was a mammal. It didn't seem to be one of the ones without gems, though from a first glance there wasn't one immediately visible to the blue avian. Perhaps this creature couldn't talk?
Noise took him by surprise. Chirping in response, Tyr fluttered his wings and jumped back, rearing his head up. They seemed to be getting their bearings, but... How did someone even handle a newborn? Granted, he'd been new, too, but... He didn't really remember much of it. He'd been curious from the start. Were all creatures not that curious?
Or was this one in pain? His heart hammered against his crystal breastbone, his wrists moving out and feathers splaying as if to say 'I'm not here to hurt you'. The mammal might not know what he meant, but it was the least he could do to try and calm them down. "Woah, hey," he gave a nervous chuckle, his voice markedly softer than before, his usual loud and brash tone taking a backseat to a new feeling of worry. "Uh- take it slow, just.. Breath, uh..." A nervous avian singsong backed his voice as he stepped from one foot to the other.
His mind blanked. What could he even tell this creature? Could they even understand him? Were they one of the creatures driven purely on instinct? Cautious steps carried Tyr forward as he folded his feathers back, his wrists held out as if he'd catch the mammal if it dove forward. They didn't seem like any of the gemless he saw around the caves, but the thought lingered anyways. Overpowering that, though, was the sense of curiosity, of discovery. Just what was this creature? Was it okay? Did he just witness a hatchling like his own?
"I'll- go get someone," he concluded, backing away. "Just sit tight." A hard swallow ran down his throat as he turned tail and fled into the air, eyes scanning immediately for anybody who could help. If he'd find no one, then- well, he really couldn't help a newborn like that, and he'd eventually leave them to their own devices.
