A night passed in Pegasus, unusually chilly and damp. The darkness lingered into late morning, and a fog clung to the meadow through the afternoon. Most of the cave returned to daylight by midday, but one patch of forest remained dark, and there was something there that hadn't been there just the day before. It had appeared overnight: an overgrown walkway of worn and broken stones, framed by weathered fences half fallen-down, spilling out into the meadow from the forest itself. Eerily flickering lanterns stood at its mouth.

The path led into the darkened wood, and the forest here was... different.

Spiderwebs, glistening with mist, clung to every branch and bush. Small and squeaking bats fluttered through the trees, many of which had lost their leaves and instead clawed black and bare at the fog above. Other trees were cloaked in deep autumnal colors, and the leaves that had fallen skittered with whispering hisses across the path.

Now and again a lantern lit the way, as if to ask: who would be brave enough to venture down it?

Compared to other caves, Pegasus by far felt the best on her hooves.

The others were at best mossy and at worst completely dry and rocky. She liked the sound of her hooves clip-clopping on rock, sure, but it felt bad. Pegasus, on the other hand, was full of grass and rivers and was bright and sunny. There was a particular stretch of land, too, that had multi-coloured wildflowers stretching up towards the lights overhead.

There were herds of deer that were a little aggressive, sure, but if she kept away from them, they didn't much bother her. She could jump and prance and skip all she wanted, and it felt very good to pelt through the flowers at full speed. She also enjoyed plucking them from their stems, but she'd quickly found that they'd wilt after a while.

Not that that would stop her.

In fact, Venti Frappuccino® with Oat Milk, Strawberry Cream Cold Foam and Caramel Drizzle, with Vegan Whipped Topping and Hazelnut Syrup had a little idea. She wandered out into the meadow where the flowers yawned up to her shoulders and began carefully plucking them, making sure to leave some of their stem behind. With her tongue sticking out, the centaur began piercing the stalks and threading another through it, making a chain of flowers.

It was thin, and fragile, but she was slowly making a circlet of flowers.

A big, creepy, green disappointment.
That about summed up Chaos-V-Twenty's entire life so far within these caves. It had achieved nothing, earned nothing and earned no respect from its peers. After a cycle of wallowing, it was growing restless. It could feel the itch crawling under its scales.

It couldn't be a failure. It shouldn't be a failure. It already felt distinctly other from its own comrades. It needed to prove itself or die trying. Because that would be preferable to seeing disappointment, or worse, the indifference. That it wasn't worth anyone's time.

So it had slunk back out to the fields of Pegasus. It had a useless element and a bright, green body that made it impossible to sneak up on anything; only the dullest of creatures fell for the 'huge rose bud' act, and if they were going to war, it doubted their foes would be of the intelligence of lessers.

It would be nothing short of a miracle if they were.

So here it was. It would train, it would eat, it would survive until it felt it could call itself worthy to go crawling back to Draco (or if Master Vargas told it to). Until its summons, it would work on being the best of the best.

Something worth a damn.

Its bottom eyelid twitched restlessly; it could feel it as it slithered all thirteen feet of itself through the grass. It was determined.

First find something to kill and eat. Something small. Something big. Whatever it could fool into sliding down its gullet. But there had to be something it was made to do. Something it was made to do. That sunset General had said it looked good at digging. Perhaps she was right.

The chrysalis could not have found a better place to form. The atmosphere was warm and pleasant, the ground grassy and soft, and there was even a small stream nearby that branched off of the main river that passed through Pegasus. It was a shame the gembound inside couldn't enjoy the scenery. Well, perhaps it was time to change that.

Something inside the golden-brown chrysalis thumped. Once, twice, and then a crack formed on the outside of the gem. The thing inside pushed again and the crack widened. A pause, maybe the creature needed to regain its energy... Suddenly, with a mighty heave, the chrysalis exploded outward and chunks of raw tiger's eye scattered as a furry mass was deposited onto the grass in a heap. It was very fluffy, parts of its fur matted down and sticky with the juices from the chrysalis. A wet black nose appeared on a brown masked face and the mass got to its paws. It was a rather large puppy of some variety, and it shook itself vigorously to try and un-stick its fur. The liquid had seeped into its thick fur down to its skin, and the feeling of cold wet was a little uncomfortable.

Also, it had goop in its eyes. That would explain why it couldn't see. The pup shook again and whined softly in frustration. Its current tactic wasn't working, so it flopped back onto the ground and pawed at its face and eyes. That helped; it wasn't perfect, as it soon discovered its paws were large and clumsy, but it was something. Soon it blinked open its eyes, golden-brown and almond-shaped and only a little goopy. It pulled itself up into a sitting position and looked around, taking everything in. It didn't understand much yet, only that the air around it was warm and the ground beneath it was soft, and that it was now experiencing it all.

Pleasant scents hit its nose. The puppy soon figured out that sniffing things was good, that was a good thing to do. There were so many different smells! It pulled itself up again, a little unsteady on its newly working legs, and waddled to and fro with its nose to the ground. Some things smelled heavy, some things smelled light, other things smelled alive and with that came the understanding that some things were for eating, and it was hungry.

It also discovered that if it really focused and screwed up its nose and pricked its ears and squinted its eyes, it could make something happen, something exciting. It could somehow sense the alive smells, but not quite with its nose. Things were clearer, the alive things alive-r. It was a curious feeling, very conceptual, and one it needed to try more later. As the sense was fading, a couple of small creatures scurried underpaw--cave mice, although the dog didn't know that yet. The alive smells jumped out and the pup paused only a moment to register the creatures before it gave chase on its stubby puppy legs.

Wait! it wanted to say. It had an instinct to jump and pounce and it wanted one of those alive things in its mouth. Hungry... Sadly, it lost the mice in the tall grasses, even after sniffing around to try and find them again. With a huff, it plopped down on its rump, panting from the exertion, and waited for something else to happen. It had a sort of low feeling now, one it may later recognize as loneliness and confusion. It felt...like it was meant to be doing something, but it had no idea what that was.

Worm had been reading. He still wasn't good at it yet, but he knew enough to follow along when there were also diagrams to aid. But, that didn't matter right this moment, what mattered was the book had given him ideas on how to make colours. Real colours that people could make things with.
He has his pebbles and chalk but it wasn't the same. He'd been practicing hard but there were just parts he didn't understand. So, if he brought something nice to Imp, maybe Imp would show him how and know how much Worm appreciated him! It was a win-win in his eyes.
The fear had been proven right once, by that awful creature, but now the fear had been justified it took root. Deep, coiling root that squeezed his heart and lungs, made it hard to breathe, impossible to focus. Just like now. He tried to look at the plants around him, he had an idea of what he needed to find, but he couldn't stop looking over his shoulder. Flinching at every passing shadow, every sway of tree branches. It was here and it was going to get him again!
Its evil has rubbed off on him and now he was cruel too. Worm gasped for a breath, one he didn't realise he was holding as fear froze him. The pathetic noise that escaped him as he ducked onto the forest floor came unbidden. He wanted to go back home. This was a mistake.

He could see it, now that consciousness had returned. The two-pronged claw mark on the outside of his chrysalis. It let light in through the thinner opal, through the murky fluids that suspended him. It elicited a feeling of drowning, being held by the fluids, looking up at the light that broke through the surface, as well as the feeling of knowing his mistake. Regret, but he was already in the waters now, drowning. Regret wouldn't save him.

He had to push.

Claws screeched across smooth stone like nails on a chalkboard; he couldn't hear it over the ringing in his ears. His rapid pulse thundered loud within his own head.

It could still be out there. Waiting.

It would be so easy to stay within the chrysalis forever. Hidden. Safe.

<thk>No, you must push.</thk> His consciousness supplied, and reluctantly he did.

Soon, opal chunks gave way, already weakened by other claws and flame, it didn't take much. The force tossed him into the grass, a heap of fluids and too lanky legs. He'd grown.

More alarmingly, the grass was still torched. Everything was. Cold ashes stuck to him and smeared grey across his skin, into the fluids. It was a cruel reminder, the ashes sticking to skin that had been scorched from his flesh. That he was a failure, that he hadn't run as he should have and that he'd paid the price.

His limbs trembled, a mixture of unfamiliarity and fear and weakness, as he righted himself to stand. His body felt different, more grown, but he didn't dare look down. What if he wasn't better? What if he looked down and saw skin peeling from his flesh again? The rancid scent of lava-kissed skin, it made his stomach lurch at the memory.

By all that is good, he was starving too. What if he looked down and saw a ravished body? A burnt sack of skin and bones, that hunger's knife had whittled away all the meat on him as it burned?

Fear kept his unseeing gaze ahead; he didn't want to know. Frightened by what state he'd find his body in. Legs wobbled with the frailty and instability of a newborn foal as he tried a step forward. His chest heaved with panic, making him look as if these tiny steps were marathons in their own right.

He could feel how much his eyes bulged out of his head, with how wide the fear was keeping them, as if it'd help him spot blue-green feathers moving all the better.

He wanted to go home. He wanted to be safe in the palace, where he could watch Imp paint, where Miss Aethril would sometimes sit him on her lap, or he could just curl up in the flower beds and be told off by the palace staff for squashing the tulips. His bottom lip quivered. He'd never felt worse, starved, weak, frightened. He wanted to go home.

Having been ... just looking for so long, Renasci has decided that here along the forest's edge is better than anywhere else. At least, until something else tells them otherwise.

For what?

A small, branch-based ring in the grasses, hopefully tall enough to keep their planned deer in, and anything wanting to eat them, out.

It also helps that the materials for building are at hand, as well as whatever they bring in helpfully standing out from the native environment. The long but narrow cave means they can easily herd any creatures they need to, where they need to.

The location also may, or may not, be a result of them noticing signs of someone else living nearby long term. Hopefully they aren't violently territorial, but if they are, the harpy has a feeling they'll know soon enough to move on.

Now they thought it, and the feathers along their spine begin to lift, old paranoia making their magic spark and sweep out in an attempt to see if they're the only one here.

In reality he was sort of... lost. He'd had a bit of magic training, but really wasn't sure how to hunt. Thus far it'd been cooperative, or scavenging. Seafoam eyes blinked blearily open, the soft bubbling of the river the first sound it heard and the sight of the open meadow the first sight. She was still for a moment before a desire to get closer and see it better had her stumbling right out of a crystal that crumbled around her. She let out a mrow! of surprise as she tumbled forward, still a bit wet and sticky from the chrysalis fluids. She raised a paw to look at the dampness of her fur, and then immediately began to lick it, not enjoying the clumpiness it caused.

She sat there for a while, near the river in the shadow of the trees, cleaning her soft fur and enjoying the sound of birdsong in the trees. She didn't know what that was but she ached to chase and hunt it. Her claws itched. She wondered why that was.

It was a beautiful night for a big, fuck-off bonfire.

As the lights in Pegasus dimmed for the evening, Tsvetok slunk out of the alcove it had been napping in. Earlier, it'd managed to take down one of the deer here; the large, burly ones-- (well, it'd found an injured one, but it still counted in their opinion) --and dragged it back to crunch into it. Little remained of the affair, except for the remaining feeling of fullness in the Valkhound's belly.

But it was.... bored.

Someone had the bright idea to instill an urge to destroy within Tsvetok. Great for your vast army of slavering, chaotic freaks who run out and kill and eat whatever they can. Less great for the local wildlife in the nest you grew it in. A hill up in the meadows immediately caught its eye, and it ran quickly up.

There would be some who would take in the sights; the flowers rustling in a faint wind, the glowing orbs on the walls and ceiling dimming and un-dimming lazily as it prepared for a pseudo-twilight. There were also some, like Tsvetok, who wanted it all dead and gone and buried.

What a great place for a fire.

Glowing bile rose in its throat, decorating the dark feathers with deep, internal light. It reared its head back, choking and then regurgitating white-hot bile onto the ground in front of it. The grass was a little dry, but sparse. Though it quickly took root and began flaming up into the ceiling, it was quickly cornered and left to burn atop the little hill.

<thk>Perfect,</thk> it though (or at least, it would have if it had any internal monologue). And then Tsvetok started thumping down the hill again to watch its work from afar.

Striding across the fields of Pegasus, Ellie wandered, each step perhaps a little more forceful then they needed to be. The witch had been living in these caves for over 4 years now, and time was beginning to stretch painfully slow.

She still remembered the day she had reunited with her other half, she would never forget the joy they had shared in the time after. Even if Lilith had been changed, even despite the stark difference between the witch Ellie knew on the surface and the one that existed here, Eleanora loved her all the same. She could not help but love her.

And it had been that way. It would always be that way. But...she could not help but notice a difference in herself.

It wasn't Lilith's fault, she told herself over and over and over again that it wasn't, it was the magic that affected her, it was the corruption she had to drown herself in week after week, cycle after cycle. Ellie had kept her distance, but she could not help but feel the effects in herself. Her patience wore thin more often then not, she was more then willing to go out and do the hunting, if only for the moment in which her spear caught a deer's hide. Her mind fell into darker places, and although she tried to hide it from Lilith, she knew she could tell.

They could always tell their minds from each other.

Right now...Ellie did her best to hide her mind. She had told Lilith that she was going to wander a while, find herbs or hunt something for dinner. But she just needed air. She needed time to try and clear her head and try to figure out what...what was wrong with her. What was she going to do?

Would she be corrupted too?

She at last stopped her halt by the river, finding a flat rock to rest herself upon as the warm lights shone down. She was a ways away from their home now and in the absence of traveling, she took a stone knife from her belt and began to sharpen it absently. It was...something to do that would keep her mind from worse places.

Thirteen liked standing guard.

The first few times it wandered off from the mouth of tunnel G, it'd been scolded for wandering off. The punishments hadn't registered until its food had been cut-- at which point, it quickly got the message. It'd taken some cycles, but the valkhound had managed to find some form of a rhythm for itself. It stood guard after the lights in Pegasus dimmed, and once they began to brighten again, it was free to do as it would as someone else took over keeping watch.

In the nights that it stood there, watching and snapping at anything that happened too close, Thirteen liked to imagine what it would do with its free time. Sleeping was one good option, yes-- one it quite enjoyed despite the occasional Corruption-fuelled nightmare. But hunting was an even better option. Often, the valkhound coming to take over Thirteen's shift would find it drooling like a dog hearing a dinner bell, its tongue slavering over its thick lips as it thought about the herds of deer or little crunchy rabbits hiding in the plains over Pegasus. It always, without fail, turned to hunt before turning to Draco.

Maybe it was less the act of guarding itself, and more the routine it liked.

As per usual, as the lights brightened over Pegasus and V-Chaos-Thirteen was relieved from duty, it stalked out into the psuedo-dawn and followed a scent that had been enticing it all night. It quickly found a tunnel runner that must have wandered in from one of the connecting tunnels. Not that Thirteen really considered-- or even cared --where it'd come from. It was there. It was alone. And it was smaller than they were.

A neat lunge and bite into its jugular later, and Thirteen was dragging it along to its usual dining area; along the wall near tunnel G where a tree had settled into the rock, its leaves shading the worst of the growing light out of Thirteen's sensitive eyes. It sat and licked its jowls slowly before digging in, bones crunching as it horked chunks of deer into its maw.

Slowly he emerged, pushing his head against the side of his chrysalis, ready to emerge again. He couldn't remember why he had rested so long, why he had chosen to hibernate for as long as he did, but he was ready to emerge once more.

It didn't take him long to shove his head through the surface, letting out a loud roar as he did so. He was free once more, alive and well, strong and ready to take on the world. Not so gently he shoved his wings against the sides, breaking them off and bringing himself out of his little shell, groaning at the wonderful feeling of stretching once more.

Oh his body ached to run and fly, but for now, he would simply walk around a few paces, shaking his fur our and stretching his limbs, one at a time, getting used to moving around all over again.

Wyrm was SINGING.

Not very well, mind you, but today was a lovely day, and it was the sort to inspire creativity. She was prancing, too; she'd left splashes of mud and clawed footprints all over down by the river. It was a mess, really. Now she was frolicking through a multicolored patch of flowers, and she'd shifted her song from half-thought-out lyrics about water and shining light to pretty flower stuff. Also, a snake-alligator actually frolicking looked silly, too, but... she made it work.

<spk>"And THEN! With the WIND and the PETALS and the..."</spk> She paused, webbed foot midair. <thk>What rhymes with wind? ...Rinned? That's not a word, uhh... Binned?</thk> She didn't really know alphabets, so she could hardly go in order letter-by-letter to find something that worked. <spk>"...FINNED! Creatures of the meadoooow!"</spk>

Again, the song was most definitely not good.

She made up for it (but not really) in enthusiasm though, doing a spin in the grass. She wasn't ever going to be a princess in some cartoon, but she sure was trying.

It definitely left her visible. And very audible. And questionably smelly, too; she hadn't cleaned the mud off, yet.

Theatrically, Wyrm plucked a daisy and lifted it to her snout, snorting loudly as if to imply she were gently sniffing. Then she sneezed, and flung it dramatically away. <spk>"And then the queen was BETRAYED... by the bloom, planted there... for DOOOOM!"</spk>

Wyrm flopped onto her back, looking up at the low, fluffy clouds and the cave ceiling high above.

It really was a nice day.
