The malformed feline had reemerged from its chrysalis two weeks ago, and without a second thought to the brother beside it, had gone in search of more to eat. Life was such a hungry chore.

The creature had wandered with surprising agility in what felt like a random direction, and now it would be rewarded. Blazing a trail straight through the Door of Life, not batting an eye at its pulsating, strangely alive surroundings, the creature would find itself at its next quarry: the Black Spire.
Without any hesitation or regard for its own life, the creature would run at the stone and attempt to break off any sort of shard from it. Seriously, what kind of demon possessed this child?

When it did, a spotted brown-and-white bird fell out and splattered onto the floor.
It knew two things. Its name was Craig, and it was hungry.
Now, most things are born with some level of impulse control. For instance, when some people see a iridescent gemstone, they may think, 'looks delicious, but is probably not edible.' Craig did not have this impulse control. His line of thought ended at 'looks delicious.'
So, off the puffling went, feet slapping wetly against the cave floor as it approached the Black Spire. It quickly gauged that a majority was too big to be eaten by its tiny beak, and went snuffling around the base of the spire.

It seemed like Vargas and Totum were resting.

Good.

She didn't want credit. She didn't want criticism. She didn't want small-talk or to explain herself; she just wanted to take the weight off designing some of these hounds. And, perhaps, it'd be nice to see some Valkhounds that weren't all black and purple. Likely, the Masters would assume they grew on their own, and train them as their own. That's all she wanted.

The Valkhand took a breath and shut her eyes, and began to create.

The first would be small and plush. About a foot long in length. She gave it countershading, long tufted ears, bright eyes and a big, fluffy tail. The hope for this one would be that it could infiltrate forts and villages and the like, be forgotten or kept as something cute and harmless, and cause havoc from within. A colour? Hmm... she'd heard blue was meant to be calming. Blue-grey, with little white paws like a cat. She hid its stone in its heart.

The second, she started with a snake-like body. There were little burrower-type Valkhound left, so this could be one of them. After a beat, she decided on a particular aesthetic: a large, rose-red, bulbeous head that could open to reveal a long frog-like tongue to collect prey into its maw. A green body. Long scales around the head and spiked thorns so that it looked like a large rose if it buried itself and shut its mouth and eyes. It'd make for a good ambush predator, if nothing else.

She moved onto the third. This one would be a messenger, perhaps some kind of tactician... she didn't want it to be the ravenous beasts that usually populated the forge. She gave it a sleek, dog-like body, sharp, pointed wings for swift flight, and a prehensile tail. This one would have neutral colours. It'd be unassuming to the people that saw it. Not the toughest or largest, but clever. Hopefully clever.

Aethril looked over her work with a frown. This would have to do for now. Any more and she'd potentially risk unintentional mutations. She glanced over Draco and, without speaking a word, turned and left her creations to grow alongside all the others.

<font color="#bcfd3b" face="copperplate" size="+3";>- THE LEVIATHAN -

It had taken some time to corral the two new Valkhounds for a small meeting. He hadn't been aware of their hatching, at first. Finding and summoning them had been a bit of a chore.

While he tried to remain calm and businesslike, Master Vargas was kind of stressed. He did his best not to show that. After all, he created Valkhounds now and then, and sent them off to war, and never heard from them again. But these-... Making a few at once, when they were clearly sort of somehow bonded like siblings, or friends. And childlike. <thk>Just get to it,</thk> he told himself, and then launched into explanation.

He kept it simple. He explained, as best he could and in brief terms, what the Chaos Forge was. <spk>"A nest, to create creatures like you, to send you off to war. In a few cycles, you will be collected for it. If all goes well, you will be returned here,"</spk> he went on, even though he knew that was unlikely. Survival rates were low as it was; usually a return wasn't expected. He wasn't entirely certain what the situation was with this group; only that it was different, somehow.

<spk>"The Chaos Forge has rules. It has ranks. If you wish a name, you may earn it by returning alive. In the meantime, you would be known as-"</spk> he paused.

Eyed them.

He had no idea which one had hatched first.

<spk>"...V-Chaos-Fifteen and V-Chaos-Sixteen,"</spk> and he gestured from Timir to Tsvetok. Honestly, uh, he wasn't even sure there wasn't already a Fifteen somewhere in the Forge. The numbers thing was getting a little... overused. He was losing track by now, especially given how many quickly earned other names. <thk>I should really be writing all this down,</thk> Vargas thought to himself. Then he moved on.

<spk>"...But you do not have to join us. If you do, you will receive training, support, backup if you fight. If you don't, you are free to wander the caves and succeed or fail on your own merits. Let me know. And if you have questions, ask them."</spk>

Now to see if either one just decided to attack him, instead.

Timur had spawned from a rock.
He knew this, sort of. He'd seen the Oilstone shards fall away around him, heard them clink to the floor of Tunnel G. But some odd instinct lurking in the back of the Valkhound's mind said that, somewhere, he had parents. That he should find his family.
Thus he was stumbling into Draco: still sorting out his legs, and all this 'walking' business, and not very gracefully at that. Just inside the Aperture, he got into a fight with a rock. A scuffle, really, a snarl and a few snaps and shoulder-check. It'd rolled, a little, when he'd stumbled into it and he'd assumed it was somehow attacking him.
It wasn't clear if he won the fight, but after a long pause, he pushed on. The clatter and guttural growls had announced his presence, but he still looked distinctly lost.

On the surface, the Leviathan was calm, authoritative, aggressively confident: his usual self. Those who knew him well, though, would have seen him in recent days and might have noted a few changes. The pacing. The staring at the new chrysalises, both at the Womb and in nearby Tunnel G, beyond the door of life. The muttering to himself, the lashing of his tail. Was he nervous? <spk>"We have been issued a call to war."</spk> One hand rose to forestall any questions as yet. <spk>"Volunteer only. Strictly. And, in fact, I recommend none of you attend. Others would revel in it, he imagined. <spk>"I do not know how dangerous it would be. It is unlikely you would return alive, if at all. These,"</spk> and he gestured back at the chrysalises, those he'd been working on with Totum for the last couple weeks, <spk>"are also destined for that battle. He paused, and took a breath, gritting his teeth. He did not like this next part. <spk>"I have been instructed to inform you all that there will be rewards for participation. Totum had been helping with this one... and thank the Creator that they had. It was hard work; the specifications had been more specific than usual, and it was three creatures instead of the usual one. Vargas was weary with the labor of it.

That wasn't all, either. Others were already being formed, his work and theirs, somewhat split between the jagged honeycomb hollows at the Womb and the Chaos-free length of Tunnel G.

The Leviathan kept his thoughts on all this to himself. He'd have to address the Chaos Forge soon enough, but... he was still deciding what to say. Those who knew him might assume him to be busy. Those who knew him best might recognize his terse avoidance as something more. It almost seemed like Master Vargas was... troubled.

And he was harried, to be sure.

Whatever it was that he was doing, it was very much out of his usual purview, and had put him very much off his stride.

He looked over his work so far.

The first: the sickly pale lilac equine, its curved horn a mockery of ancient myth. What looked like a delicate and gentle creature at first glance could split that jaw, lengthwise and width-wise both, a gaping maw filled with jagged fangs. The sharp cloven hooves at the hind feet were mirrored by dual claws at the front, meant for hooking in and ripping flesh. Quills lay hidden in the plush fur of the tail, a tail built like a savage whip. It was a thing of beautiful cruelty.

The second: amphibious, bulky, its thick flesh rubbery and wet along its underside, an armored and segmented violet-magenta shell lining its back. Four suction-toed feet with sharp talons provided locomotion, and a second, muscled pair of forelimbs, two hook claws not unlike those of the first creation's. A broad, strong jaw and a sticky tongue ensured that smaller prey would not escape, and larger prey would find this beast no easy opponent.

The third: the largest, but lighter-built than creation two. This one was lanky, tall, walking on short well-muscled hind legs and oversized, quill-tipped wings. A long, thick paddle tail was studded likewise with stiff, stabbing quills; the heron-like neck ended in an entire stabbing face not unlike a bird's skull, gleaming with Chaotic light.

And these three were only the beginning. Who knew how many volunteers this task might gain. How many of the Forge... might leave the caves entirely. Might perish Elsewhere, and never return.

Vargas didn't like to think of it.

In five months' time, these three creations--along with any Valkhound (Oilstone) volunteers, regardless of their native Element--will be taken to another world to wage war in the Creator's name. This event will be a guided combat event, not unlike the Trials of Hydra. Those who survive will be returned to the caves and granted their choice from a selection of rewards. The Gravedigger had been counting down the days at this point. He knew when the time was coming. That time was now. Four cycles had passed since he hatched near the Spire and its training was...not complete, in his opinion, but as far as he would get here in the caves.

Perhaps he could learn more on the surface, when he went. Well, he would. He figured he would learn a great number of things up there. Fighting different, less "animal" things, perhaps fighting giant monsters like he had in Eridanus (and that had gone extremely well I promise) but he really hoped he would get to destroy things. Lots of things. He was ready for it.

But, there was one last thing he needed to do before he went. It had been turning around in his head for some time. This was his last chance.

He and Eleven were...he liked to think they were friends. They'd spared a few times over the cycles, went on adventures, found Noctua (and were promptly denied entry), and talked. It was weird. He wasn't made for making friends. He was made to be a weapon. But he'd done it anyways.

Friends. Yeah. You could call them that. Probably the only friend he made. And the only one he'll ever had.

So, he wanted to do something special. Before he left. He stepped through Draco, swinging his head around for the familiar hyena-esque shape, until he found it. <spk>"Hey, Eleven, uh. Can we talk real quick?"</spk>

Green Wallcrawlers are millipedes, with thin, tubular, slick bodies made up of hundreds of smooth segments, and dozens of legs beneath. They are usually green in coloration, ranging from the dull yellow-green of spring leaves to bright and shining emerald. They are often found crawling along cave walls, using specialized secretions and jaws to erode tiny amounts of rock to consume. They will also eat any fungus that they find growing along the stone. Sometimes, a Green Wallcrawler can fall off of a wall after it’s eaten its fill and become too heavy, and occasionally they will land on a passing Gembound’s head quite by accident. They are generally very harmless, and quite edible (providing mineral nutrition), but in extremely rare cases they may try and eat an unaware Gembound’s exposed gemstone.
To preserve Origin Cave through improving its status in the eyes of Lord Dhracia. To serve Lord Dhracia's mandates, and the Creator by proxy, in the creation, training and testing of creatures to serve as chaotic monsters. In addition, they must aim to improve productivity, and the quality of these creations. The Chaos Forge operates in Draco. While the Black Spire itself confers Corruption on those near, the Forge has little reason to stay so close: instead it will mostly create and test in the Womb at the back wall. One or more guardians will generally be tasked with watching the seemingly-breathing Aperture to ensure that no enemies enter unseen.
The Enforcer core will often be working at the creation of monstrous creatures through reproduction, training themselves and these creations to become stronger, testing these creations against weakness. • Hound - This rank is awarded alongside the member's first successful achievement and chosen reward. The majority of the Forge at any given time should be Hounds.
• Proven - An optional rank that can be selected in lieu of a reward by those of Hound rank.
• Overseer - The highest rank, beneath Master, these Oversee particular aspects of the Forge to ensure that they're running smoothly, exhibiting their own measure of leadership and authority. There will only be one or two Overseers at any given time.

Members of each rank must answer to members of those above them. Ranks may be promoted and demoted to reward or punish certain achievements or failures.

Testing and Rewards

A core feature of the Chaos Forge is its archaic use of military-style address and promotion. Certain privileges are earned purely by proving productivity, skill and worth to the group as a whole. I've decided to set out to clarify these more clearly so that character progress can be charted with more confidence, and so the progression is something to look forward to instead of become potentially frustrated with. The goal of the system is to provide a tangible sense of progression and reward, and things to work toward for visible character development!

Rewards are privileges earned via progression. Chaos Forge members may choose one reward for each progression step they take. While there is a list of privileges, characters may also choose to request a privilege of their choice not listed here, no matter what it may be--either in advance or upon taking a progression step. Whether their "Other" choice is granted will be taken IC. A Reward may be earned once every three cycles.*

• A Name - the character chooses a name of its choice, and will be referred to by this instead of a numerical designation
• Procreation Rights - this character can procreate, unlimited by amount or frequency, but the spawn are expected to be a part of the Chaos Forge and to contribute as such
• Free Roaming - the character can wander the caves at will, so long as they aren't currently needed
• "Free" Children - the character can have one litter that isn't part of the Forge. They may reproduce in any cave and raise the children how they see fit. Procreation rights must be earned first.
• Promotion - the character can advance to Proven rank. This means that they will outrank other members of the Forge (bar other Proven or Overseers), who must then obey them. There is also the potential to rise to Overseer: likely to only be given out when vacancy is available and a character has truly proven itself, but is something any character can strive towards and try to prove themselves worthy of!
• Cepheus Vacation - the character may choose to spend up to two weeks in a room of Cepheus's palace. This comes with a nice bed, housekeeping, a theatre (with seats to fit anyone), free chef-cooked meals, and more. Isra, Cepheus's guardian, is the authority there. (This can be chosen multiple times.)

Progression Steps are actions taken that define a character's skill, experience or usefulness. Some steps are specific to the character's role in the Forge. Character designated Assassins and Scouts answer to Overseer Garnet-Delta, who will be the one to decide on their training progress and rewards, although some rewards (ex. promotion) can only be assigned by Master Vargas.

• Complete Training - the character has fully and totally completed its training, to the point of being an expert in its field and capable of training others in its knowledge.
• Trial of Hydra - this character has survived a Trial of Hydra. (Can be earned more than once.)
• Deathmatch Win - take first, second or third place in a Arena battle (Event) in Orion. (Can be earned more than once.)
• Event Participation - play an active role in any major cave-wide Event or Quest that requires interaction. Events that would count include puzzle, exploration and combat GM-events; events that pose no risk are unlikely to count. (Take these IC; if it's something your character can brag about, they can likely claim it as an achievement worthy of rewards.) Spies and scouts are likely to get rewards simply for observing these events, and reporting accurately back. (Can be earned more than once.)
• A Worthy Spawn - create a spawn that proves your breeding worth! This can be earned if the spawn is particularly impressive and worthy, or once it begins to earn Privileges of its own. (Is only earned once.)
• Assassination (Assassin-only) - Garnet-Delta may assign assassinations to specific characters as part of their progress. These are likely to be mock-assassinations with their own rules, or real assassinations with a dangerous Lesser Gembound as their target. (Real assassinations can be claimed more than once; the mock-assassination test can only be claimed once.)
• Enemy Capture - The capture/execution of a Greater Gembound, Cleaner or Praetor that serves Order will incur a reward. The capture, too, of a rebel (with reasonable proof) will also be rewarded. As an additional reward, the captured creature's gemstone will be awarded to their capturer to revive, keep as a trophy, destroy, etc. (Can be earned more than once.)
• Recruitment - Recruit a useful member to the Forge. The member must join for the long term, and be useful in some way to the Forge.
• Completed Assignment - Finish an assigned long-term task--ex. completing a building project, raising a brood of spawn, etcetera.

* There will likely be exceptions to this, ex. those who take steps to be recognized above and beyond the norm, ex. leading a successful cavewide event or the like.

Punishments
Punishments are an additional incentive to perform to or above expectations. (On an OOC note, all are designed to trigger additional roleplay--either through being extremely public or providing opportunity for additional advancement, self-reflection, etc.) They are relatively matched to the severity of the failure or rulebreak, and reflect the militaristic nature of the Chaos Forge.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Assignment of additional responsibilities such as hunting or gathering food, serving as the Chaos Forge chef, babysitting, cleaning, and sentry duty. If there were toilets, you'd be scrubbing them.
Granted for: Slacking Off (failure to perform assigned tasks), Taking Unearned Benefits (using a name, travelling, reproducing, etc. without having earned them)

TEMPORARY RIGHTS REMOVAL
The (temporary) removal of a right or rights previously gained.Vacation: cancelled.
Granted for: Disobedience (refusal to obey a higher rank)

PERMANENT RIGHTS REMOVAL
The (permanent) removal of a right or rights previously gained. These can be earned back through further achievements. Get back to work.
Granted for: Taking Unearned Benefits (using a name, reproducing, etc. without having earned them)

DEMOTION
The lowering of rank by one or more levels. That means that jerk over in Accounting can boss you around again!
Granted for: Disobedience (refusal to obey a higher rank) multiple times, Defiance, Taking Unearned Benefits (using a name, travelling, reproducing, etc. without having earned them)

THE SHACKLES
Wouldn't you like to know?
Granted For: Unknown as yet... This punishment is being reserved for special occasions.

BODILY HARM
The damage of the body to mirror damage done to another. Stop hitting yourself.
Granted for: Harming another Forge member outside of designated spars.

TRIAL BY COMBAT
Prove your worth. You're facing Draconua today.
Granted for: Miserable failures in major tests, and similar repeated weaknesses.

CHRYSALIS
An exciting public spectacle in which the punished member is forcibly returned to its chrysalis, and made a violent example of! There'll probably be popcorn.
Granted for: Defiance (public or vehement disobedience, plus refusal to acknowledge authority), other (repeated) infractions

DEATH
Execution and sacrifice to the Creator. Fun for the whole crowd. Break out the black confetti.
Granted For: Rebellion, plotting to rebel.
