Being small was always terrifying, but it sometimes had its advantages. Akiya knew she would be an easy meal for almost anything that moved on the forest floor, but she also knew she could walk on the thinnest branches, and climb into the smallest crevices. That meant she could watch the creatures on the ground without having to worry about getting caught by them--well, worrying too much. There was that one time with the fox...

But regardless, she felt this was important, doing her observations, and she also wanted to use the opportunity to practice her stealth. Could she keep herself unseen? She knew that her prey didn't sense her, but what about the other Gembounds? Just because all the ones she'd met so far were friendly didn't mean they all would be, and from what she'd heard they had powerful magic. Certainly it was far more powerful than her own. Maybe they could track her somehow, and even reach her in her refuges.

Now she heard something approaching, something big. This was the time to practice her stealth, then. If she could hide herself from whatever was coming--well, it didn't prove that she was a master of stealth, but it was certainly good practice.

Crouching down in the crook of a tree branch, she stared down at the spot where the approaching creature would come into view.

Or, more accurately, she tried to. Unfortunately, she fell again--nearly. She managed to hook her claws into the bark of the tree she was on, but she was still dangling from the branch.

Xin had been in Canis for a while. To be honest, he was starting to get a bit sick of it. Sure, he could prance around with the bones, but that could only entertain the small marten for so long. Bones, while fun, got boring after a while. He wondered if anyone was nearby.

Well, part of him wondered that, anyway. Another part of him hoped there wasn't anyone nearby. "Communicating" with other gembounds was exhausting. Most of the time, he couldn't even really...do much. Except for play. Playing he could do. ...Or running. He could do that too. But talking? Communicating? He was mute! He most certainly couldn't do that, much to his disappointment. He would like to talk, love it even! But he couldn't. It still hurt, he had to admit, knowing that most other gembounds could communicate properly while he couldn't.

He lay down and began to think about the other gembounds he had seen. They had all, aside from one, been able to talk. It was interesting to hear their voices. Each gembound had a unique voice, a voice all their own. And what did Xin have? Nothing! He was mute. He had no voice. And he never would. His eyes narrowed. Never. He would never have a voice of his own. He would live to be however old, and never have a voice. The thought, which had made him sad at first, now only filled him with anger. Never! He'd never be able to talk, never be able to share his thoughts with others!

Xin bared his teeth in anger. Tears had started to drip down his cheeks and onto the floor below. He wanted to scream, to let his frustrations out, but he couldn't! He couldn't scream, he couldn't laugh, he couldn't make any sound! And it made him angry to no end. Angry and sad. Sad and angry. The two worked together so nicely. He could be sad and angry at the same time. Tears continued to fall down, and oh how he wanted to scream, to properly cry, to make noises when he cried! But he couldn't!
They had quietly stalked the massive caverns that they had been born into for a few days now, quietly observing. They already had learned that they could, in fact, live off of rocks. That was good. Their first attempt at hunting had not gone well. The lizard was far too quick to be caught in juvenile paws and chomped on by still-yet dull teeth. Tag-und Nacht had ended up with their nose stuck in a crack in the wall.
They never said anything more. Simply their names. Well, they also said "Sol and Mani", a name that had stuck. Tag-und Nacht dubbed the voices Hati Sol and Sköll Mani.
Ratlike tail flicking back and forth, the galahound watched the shadows through two eyes, one painted blue and the other painted fiery yellows and oranges. The excited little fox's legs twitched, propelling his back end high into the air until he flipped heels over head. A sharp yip and he was back splayed onto his belly. Suddenly it all came flooding back and he curled up, hiding his face in his paws with a high-pitched yell of "that was mean!"

Imperia had traveled since their hatching, and now found themselves in a room with lots of greenery. Plants crowded around barren paths. They could faintly hear the bubbling of streams. The cave had an earthy smell to it. There were also rocks reached up from the floor, and the walls were filled with tunnels. Overall, it was quite pretty.

Imperia hated it.

Looking around the room, they began to wonder what it would look like if there was fire. If everything here was destroyed. Slowly, they began to grin. That seemed like a wonderful idea. Slowly they began to focus on their magic. The pink gem on their claws began to glow faintly, and soon enough, extreme heat began to emanate from their paws. Some of the grass they were stepping on began to turn to ash nearly immediately. They gave a laugh that was filled with no emotion.

Imperia began to drag their paws along more surfaces, turning more of it to ash. They had to admit, this was rather fun. Burning stuff was definitely a nice way to pass the time.

Splashy had been traveling a bit since she hatched, and concluded that she didn't really like this place. It was wet. Wet and slippery. She felt as if she would slip at any moment. As she walked along, unknowingly following the sound of a waterfall, she soon came to a stop at the sight. A waterfall cascaded down into a lagoon below. She walked over to it and peered down. The water was clear, and she could see all of the way down. She immediately backed away from it a bit, not wanting to fall down.

She looked around. Was someone nearby? She thought about calling out for someone but then thought against it. If someone was here, fine. Great. If not, also fine. Also great. She didn't particularly want someone to be nearby, but at the same time she did. Splashy shivered slightly. It was cold here. A few water droplets sprayed on her from the waterfall nearby, still getting her wet. Thought not as wet as if she had fallen in. She crouched low and licked herself as well as she could, trying to get the wetness off.

Deep within Eridanus, life was stiring. Hidden for a long time beneath the ferns, bedded in soft moss, a small stone, shimmering in deep blues and greens, wobbled slightly, then stilled again.
After a long time it wobbled again, teetering to the side untill, with a faint 'plop' it rolled out of its resting place. Again it quieted, as though listening to its surroundings, trying to find something.
Seeing to come to a decision, it started moving resolutely, rocking first one way, then the other, movement hindered by its rounded, but nevertheless cube like shape. Finally gaining enough momentum it vaulted over one of its corners and continued its bumpy progress.

Had anyone seen it and known the destination of it current path, they would most certainly have deterred it or given it a nudge in a different direction. But the occupant, still striving to move its bulky shell, could not know where it was headed, for the stone encasing it was almost opaque, thin strips of lighter stone showing only distorted outlines and vague shapes.

The ultimate end of the stones journey was just ahead. Two deep pools of clear water, serenely calm, lay in the stones path. With a last wobbling hop, the stone fell over the edge of one of the pools and floated quietly for a moment, as though the occupant was trying to understand the new situation.

Then the stone started turning over and over itself in the water in frantic movements, causing deep ripples in the pool and propelling the stone in random directions. Finally it hit the hard granite like edge of the pool with a loud cracking sound. Several cracks appeared and the stone hurriedly turned, so that the cracks faced upward. It bobbed for a moment, drifting back out into the middle of the pool. Then there was a faint scratching sound, a slight soft pounding, and a loose piece of the shell wobbled upwards, then fell away, exposing a small dark snout, sniffing cautiously.

As the snout pushed upwards, out of the small hole, more pieces of its stone shell fell away, untill there was enough space for a dark head and large pointed ears to look out. The snout nudged at the side of the shell, making it rock dangerously in the water. With a small squeak the Gembound curled in on herself as splashes of water hit her fur. She nosed the wet patches cautiously, then gave them a tentative lick. Finding no threat in her fur she carefully peered over the edge of her shelter.

The water had calmed again, only slight ripples maring its pristine surface. The Gembound varefully extended a paw towards the flat expanse of water, thinking of leaving her shell, that was geting uncomfotably damp. Reaching the water was difficult, as the Gembound had to lean out of her shell to do so. Her other paw was resting on the rim of the shell, which suddenly gave way as more weight leaned on it. The outstreached paw hit the water as the Gembound pitched forward and to her great fright, the paw sank right into the water with little resistance. She pulled back immediately with a loud cry, breaking more of her stone casing as she did so, staring with new horror at the no longer smooth surface of the water. Whimpering slightly she huddled down in her shell again. She knew instinctivly she had to get out of her shell, but had no idea how to do it.

The vast green room was asleep, the bubbling water muted as condensation formed on the slick walls patched with moss. A drop fell here and there, a pop as a cave's tear fell upon a leaf and rolled slowly, slowly to the ground. It smelled like green. It smelled like darkness breached with light, filtering the shadows and beckoning the life to reach towards it. It smelled like the cold Earth, soft between toes and hiding infinite micro-organisms in the crevices of the grains. It smelled like a new day.

A creeping vine clinging to a far wall shivered as the surface behind it moved. Dirt fell, revealing a dull orange gem. As it moved again, more dirt fell. Piercing the silence, a sudden crack echoed from the gem. A piece of it tumbled to the soil below. Inside, a creature stirred. Long legs with softened claws scraped and scratched at the confines of its cell, the cell that had held its life within for what seemed like ages. It had been gestating within, given life from the walls of the cavern. Given life from the stones.

A rasping rumble emanated from the stone. It was citrine, a yellow colored quartz with deep orange hues. It glittered as the life within moved. Another rasp, what sounded like a bark, broke the silence. The life kicked at the cell walls and sent small shards of the gem to the ground. A three toed foot hung out of the hole it had created with its force. It paused, feeling the cold air surround its freed limb. Did it want to know what that freshness felt like in its feathers?

More silence followed. The creature inside huffed, as if all its energy had gone into that single action. Closed eyes rolled, a soft beak pressed against the citrine barrier. Out there was life. Inside was warmth, and gentleness. Muffled dreams and the unknown. Out there, it needed to know to survive. This was the first choice Kiskimmet would ever make, and the odds were stacking against them. As they leaned against the broken wall of its birth gem, a web of cracks spread upwards. Leg still hanging freely in the open air, a sudden burst of energy made the creature's heart beat faster and its limbs strike out. It shattered the remainder of its confines, and slid from the citrine chrysalis to the ground.

A lump of downy feathers in the dirt, the bird was unsure what was next. Their head lay horizontally on the ground, their legs tangled beneath them. Their wings were outstretched, as if they had flung themselves from the wall and fallen flat to the earth below. With a short intake of air (their first breath!), Kiskimmet opened their eyes and began to look around. This now was their world.

Todd wondered what other spells there could be found. There were the ones that made things jump and the ones that made things glow, and the ones that made things crackle... those were the ones he'd found so far. His tongue lolling out, Todd moved as fast as he could, his steps slow and his hind legs hopping. Kallista had suggested asking others for their spells. The dingo was still limping, albeit barely. In a swift dash it'd be hardly noticed, but when she was loping along, as she was now, the slight unevenness in her gait no longer imperceptible.
She'd lost a bit of weight, at first, her injury at the hands-... err, trunk of the elephant leaving hunting far more difficult. It'd been painful at best, frustrating and agonizing at worst. "Worst" being when her hunt had not only left her stomach sharply empty, but her leg freshly twisted, stabs of pain sending her limping and whimpering back into the hidden embrace of ferns.

For a time she'd gone rail-thin, barely able to snap up mice by waiting at their holes in the moss. Now she had fattened up some, though her glossy tawny coat had lost some of its brightness, and her amber eyes were more wary and withdrawn.
She was thirsty, now, rather than hungry--for once. She wouldn't pass up prey if it limped past her, of course, but for now at least she sought a stream.
Feral found herself, instead, at the Eyes: the large, twin pools sitting still and cold near one cave wall. She approached cautiously, head low, sniffing around the edge and tense to the point of nearly dashing away.

Only when the water didn't outright jump up and attack her did she dare to place her paws at its edge, lapping quietly at the cold.
So long as nothing attacked her, here, she'd be fine. Of course, "nothing" might end up to be crazy preachers, and "attack" could quite well be verbal, but she didn't know that.
(Anyone who wants a trinket made for them, stop on by!)

He'd been in Pisces for a while now, comfortable with his Mama and his new family to keep him company. Nothing was bad here, nobody looked down on him or sneered at him or called him useless (He still felt useless, but that was besides the point). But in his little walks around the lake and the waterfall and the hills and all the neat little crevices, he's picked up things. Long grasses, little pieces of wood, a sharp bit of metal, flowers and beads, among other things, all sat in a big messy pile in front of him. He didn't find anything to make those hand-wraps he had envisioned so long ago, but that was okay. When he was strong enough (or brave enough to wander away from what he now considered home), he would go and find those things.

For now, he sat next to the little ponds with the many silvered fish, wondering idly if they'd let him take some scales to make things with, or if he could dive down deep enough to go fishing for some. Could the fish talk? It would be interesting to set up a rapport with them, but if imagined that if breathing air was uncomfortable, then they wouldn't want to speak with him anyway.

He didn't really blame them.

He huffed a little and looked to his little treasure trove and picked up some grasses and some flowers, humming to himself. He wove it carefully, losing himself in the making of it, making it strong and tasteful, with little white flowers crowning the purple ones in the center. He held it and gazed at it, smiling to himself. Yarrow thought it was rather pretty.
Moments ago, Drae had been released into Polaris. More like unceremoniously dumped. Her chrysalis had opened, and she'd come tumbling out, upside down. She was small but quite flexible at birth. The damage was minimal. It was just annoying. The puff ball trilled: a high pitched bird song indicating, in this situation, distress. For a long moment, she stumbled in a small arch of three or four feet before her eyes snapped open. They were massive and yellow in color. Again, she trilled, this time louder. The space she occupied was empty. Her only company was her ruptured cocoon and the small fungi that grew over her head.

Ungainly paws trumped upon the ground and she began to spin in a circle head tipped back, looking at all the mushrooms above. Her left paw clacked out a song as she danced. It took many moments of jubilee for her to realize that she sound was coming from her. Falling back onto her haunches, she lifted her paw, startled to see one of her squishy pads replaced with a hard green stone. It looked a bit diseased, if she was being honest. A few times, she rapped her foot against the floor. It seemed to have little effect on the stone. Eyeing it again, she began to methodically clean her foot, raspy tongue making sure she got between her toes. Draegoon eventually moved onto her other foot, then the other, and the other. Her face was contorted into a wide-eyed expression of utter concentration as she bathed, hind leg lifted higher than one might think was possible.
