The chrysalis was small. A gorgeous starry blue, but no larger than a large pebble, easy to overlook among the mists. And small as it was, it held inside a very small creature. But that creature was ever growing. And now, the creature was no longer smaller than the shell that contained it.

Cracks spread across the brittle surface, hard to see at first, hiding among the spiked stars of the pattern. Then the cracks and pressure became too much, the structure unable to hold, and the shell shattered, leaving the small form inside to roll to the moist ground, waking blearily.

It was not the most attractive creature that appeared now. Wrinkled and dull brownish with a slight dome to the head and too-big eyes. He’d grow out of most of that, sure, and with no way to see himself, he could hardly care. His surroundings were much more interesting.

Large eyes scanned his surroundings warily and he walked forward, tongue slowly climbing out to clear one of them before hiding back away. His movements were unpracticed- slow and jerky and uncoordinated. He’d hear a sound or see a flicker through the mist and his head would dart that direction, only for him to start forward again when he lost interest or it proved nothing. He needed to find something to climb or to shelter him.

If Kera could remember how she got here, she'd likely be angry about it.

She never left her home; not once in the last few cycles. The last thing she remembered was heading to her den to sleep, and then she woke up in darkness. She had been here before-- her chrysalis, she knew of it --but she didn't know how she got here, or where she really even was.

Sleep-died, perhaps.

The rose quartz chrysalis sat in the ruins of her homes-- dark stones and charred foundation piled on top of it. Breaking it was easy enough. A strong leg kicked out behind her and the gemstone came crumbling down; but promptly, she was hit in the face with a brick.

"Oh fuck ME," she snarled through stone. It was akin to digging out of her own grave; a powerful paw lifted to push stone and brick aside as she scrambled up. It hurt. Charred ash and dirt got in her mouth and her eyes as she hauled her girthy body out of the remains of her den.

And even then, she was on top of a mound. Kera's tongue swiped her muzzle as she started half-skidding, half-clambering down, cutting her pawpads on bits of sharp rock. There were no lights or mushrooms here anymore-- they were either crushed or burned away in the fire.

In fact... everything was charred, burnt by fire. What happened here?

The wolf looked around, shook herself out, and then sat down to start licking at the cuts along her legs. "Fuck me," she repeated, spitefully.
The lights crackled overhead, and then fell dim.

Vivilene adjusted her grip on the satchel around her upper torso. It was about now that she was starting to regret the decision to enable Asteri's Exploring and Cool Herbs Quest, especially after their father had told them, explicitly, to be careful. Vivilene, up until half a second ago, had no intentions of being that careful.

She doubted Asteri did, too.

Moonlit eyes flitted (bleat) to the leopard leading the way. He seemed a lot more (bleat) confident than she ever could be. Was he even afraid (bleat) of the dark? She knew he liked fire, maybe it (bleat) stopped him from being scared. Maybe it stopped him from (bleat) being scared all the time?

Maybe it wasn't so bad, but she could feel the anxiety starting to rise as she fell silent again. Her small hooves weren't exactly made for wandering through swamps, and she didn't like the way the wet mud felt against her legs. Whatever Cool Herbs there were here, she hoped they found them soon.

She looked around, and then back to Asteri. Asking would be a good idea, she decided-- but when she tried to settle and reach for her magicka, she felt a jolt going up her gut instead of the familiar, almost comforting jangle. In response to this she gagged; an abrupt sound compared to her quiet, gentle bleating.

The cervitaur shook herself out and then leapt after Asteri to keep following him, fingers itching against the leathery strap of the satchel.
At least that is what Zavenlora believed. But Zutar believed her. Astraea had taken two creatures who she cared for. Now was payback time. First, she would search for the den that Zavenlora thought Atinneas's stone was being held. It wasn't hard to find. The area around it was trampled and she marched right into the den. She spoke, not caring who was in there. "Excuse me! I'm here because I heard that my friend Atinneas's stone was being held here! I would like to have it back! MY name is Zutar!" After she spoke she swore once she got Atinneas's stone, she would spread the truth of Astraea's previous form to every gembound she met. Astraea may have held power in these caves, but she wouldn't let him murder gembounds who were innocent. She waited for anyone to answer.
It seems to be a dreamless sleep that Hikari has found himself in. A hibernation that feels like it stretches on for eternity; who can say how many cycles he has spent in his hyacinth chrysalis while the world went on beyond him?

Needless to say, he is awake, now—and he quickly finds the amniotic fluid he’s immersed in rather unpleasant.

Not to mention containing very little air.

The kick he gives to the inside of the chrysalis in the process of shattering the thing around him is displeased, to say the least—although rationally he knows the chrysalis has done nothing to him except merely exist, well… he’s been in hibernation for caves know how long.

He can afford a bit of irrationality.

He practically sighs with relief at the sights and sounds of familiar Cetus; the protective mist swirling around him, the muddy, humid smell in the air, the distant screaming calls of his favorite birds… ah, it’s good to be awake.

Now, where was he?

He flicks his wings idly as he thinks and winces internally at the wetness still clinging to him, the bits of gemstone shards that have lodged themselves in his feathers disorderly and unbecoming.

Well; that’s something he has to deal with.

He scans his surroundings and begins to make his way to the nearest pool of water; murky as it may be, at least it’ll help with cleaning this fluid off his feathers before it dries and becomes all sticky.
Then as she had cautiously nosed through it, wading deeper into the tunnel as she explored the new phenomenon, she had slipped and fell. It was her first real experience with hurt. It had left bruises and small cuts that left her yelping and crying, stunned by the new sensation.
What was even more worrisome was that she found she was not yet coordinated enough to climb back up into the cave she came from. She couldn't marvel at its colors. She couldn't feel its walls, she couldn't do much at all. Oh, how dreamy was it to be in the center of this honey and to simply be. She pulsed against the edges of her chrysalis. It was tight. She couldn't breathe, she couldn't- she was hungry. She struggled to taste with her mandibles, struggling for more of the sweet honey that'd left the womb that held her. Oh, how hungry she was...

She continued to stumble through Polaris, burning pain shooting up her injured legs before, with a finality, they gave way beneath her and she felt flat on the stone, about halfway between the strange rings and the cave she called a home. She was breathing heavily, a bit of panic in her chest. How was she going to get home like this? How was she going to do anything like this? She still needed to tell Aure about what she'd done and the decision she'd made, she needed to restart her life! A second chance!

She sniffled and tried to move her legs but they were so sore, they merely budged weakly as she begged them to move. No, no, she was stronger then this! She was going to learn all the spells in the world, hold every magic possible in her pawpads! She was going to do it! But even looking through her vast repertoire of spells that she carried, she couldn't think of a single one that would help her right now. So she went limp, defeated, glazed eyes just staring ahead where the Spire sparkled in the distance. <thk>Is this where it's going to end? Right near where it started?</thk>

In the furthest reaches of Eridanus, right where the cave opens to Tunnel I, there was a small black chrysalis. It was sitting on the edge of the entrance to the cave, a barely noticeable thing. Indeed, the gembound inside must be quite small.

Life is strange. When you don't have a clue what's going on, all you can see is darkness and all you feel is cramped. That's how Void was feeling at the moment, the small ungulate feeling frustrated by whatever it was that was keeping her trapped.

<spk>"Let.. me.. out!"</spk> she bayed, knocking a cloven hoof against the wall of her chrysalis. The form of it, black as night from the inside, gave a crack. Light began to peer through, and Void was encouraged. She let out a bleat, slamming her hoof against the chrysalis once more.

Another crack. Good.

With all her might, she tried once more to break open the shell surrounding her. She gave a powerful kick to the confines of this hell, and felt the chrysalis give way to her. As quickly as she had kicked, she was free, and her small and fuzzy body was laid out flat on the ground - she hadn't expected to tumble out.

Lifting her head, she looked around her at the mosses.
It was more filling then absorb nutrients could ever do for her, it was a task far more enjoyable then just looking at the Spire and she filled up much of her day with eating bananas and thinking about the memories.

But an uncomfortable feeling was rising in her lower stomach, like she was bloated despite the crystalline skin, and it soon developed into a horrible pain that had her trembling in her crystal. She couldn't do anything about it. She didn't know any spells that would help, she couldn't think of anything she could do, she only had to endure it as it got worse and worse.

It took a few days, but, eventually, when the pain had her on the edge of consciousness, she felt a tingling on her neck and a stiffening of the muscles in her face. Something was crawling over her back and pressing down even heavier on the already tremendous weight of her gemstone. She didn't react, though, too worn out by the constant pressure on her gut and the pain that was slowly killing her to even care until the rest of her head was encased within an amethyst and she fell into unconsiousness.
Her mind engaged in the brainpower burning task of grazing. They were stuck in a ritual. Their lips nosing for greenery to add. Each blade of grass a new discovery of taste. Each discovery of taste reminiscent of grass. Tupu didn't care. They just mowed down blade after blade. There was no rational thought in there. Or any at all. Their trail of chewing lead to a tree, and they bit up the surface of it. Her gaze caught bright red pods. Their smell was rich and fruity, and Tupu wanted it.
Tupu lifted upon her hind legs, holding her forelimbs at her side like a skinny bigfoot. She stretched her tongue towards the cocao pod. It shook, but didn't fall. Tupu screamed at it.
Ruby-Beta stalked through Pisces, many eyes narrowed with slight displeasure. Now that the Overseer's eyes were no longer on it, it was harder and harder to actually motivate itself to go searching for other to fulfill the tasks that had been set out for it. Without a watchful eye, all it wanted to do was curl up and go to sleep. Would the Overseer really noticed if he decided to just slack off all the time? Would it really matter?

No, it convinced itself that it would matter. And, besides, it wanted to impress the Overseer. It wanted his approval. That's what was important. It had been given these tasks directly from him and it would carry them out to the letter because that's what Ruby-Beta had decided was the purpose of its life - to do what the Overseer, and only the Overseer, told it to do.

It stepped through Pisces, but even with its senses alert, it did not know if it was coming upon anything soon. It didn't know if there was even anything else in this cave to begin with. Well, that would be extremely disappointing, if it came all the way here only to have nothing to hunt. Maybe it should have stuck to Lessers.

She was far overdue hatching again, she'd woken up some time ago, but had blatantly refused to move an inch, not at all interested in breaking free from this place, to go back out into the world and suffer without Mother. No, she was just going to stay here. Stay here and be alone because that was the only thing that mattered - she no longer had a Mother.

She felt sick. She felt weak. She felt like one touch would shatter her. She wondered if she could even break out of here if she wanted to. She needed to find Mother again. She needed to return to her because she hadn't felt like this when she was with Her. She had felt nothing but love and affection, nothing but her grace and the comfort of a family to surround her. Now all she felt was cold, despite the warmth of her chrysalis, and loneliness. No thoughts in her head, no touches of pride or love to keep her calm. Nothing...nothing but silence.

She wanted to stay here forever. To wither away into nothing. Without Mother, what was life? What did it mean, what was she supposed to do? What was she to become? But she didn't have a chance to return to her dark musings - her time in the chrysalis was up. The shell, too weak to sustain her any longer, cracked without her consent and dumped her on the ground, the amniotic fluids expelling from her lungs as she reflexively took in a deep breath.

She flopped onto the wet ground of Cetus, exactly where she'd been slammed to the ground and utterly broken. Right in the middle of where the war had happened and all she was faced with...was the tree. The den that Mother had lived within, where she had lived with Pallas and Howl and all the others. The tree. It was gone. All that was left there was a sinkhole. An open pit filled with muddy swamp water with littered shards of burnt wood drifting on its surface.

So that was it then. Mother was gone. The family was gone. Her home was gone. Emotion clogged up her throat and she sniffled, descending quickly into sobs and she curled up tighter in on herself, feeling so utterly alone in the world, trembling as she released her sorrows. She wanted her Mother back.

Oka had dragged the grass back to their spot. The assistance of Qisiux was much needed, and made the trek back that much easier. They planted it close to mass of the gnarled roots they called home. Well, they didn't really plant it. They just stood it up and hoped itd grow. It leaned slightly against the tree. Oka wasn't strong enough to plant it fully upright. Nor did Oka have any feet or claws with which to plant it. This wasn't even given the hours it'd taken them to get it into that position. Oka really wished they had hands. And not nubs. But...maybe they could use their nubs! Maybe it'd work! They placed their tentacles against the dirt, trying to scrape away at it.

No dice. All they did was stain their nubs brown. Browner than usual. Oka sighed. The..the plant looked pretty though! It looked pretty against their tree. Their gaze was drawn to the grass near the base of the tree. The smaller, normal grass.

"Will you grow, maybe?" Oka took a clump of grass. Taking care to try and preserve as many roots as possible. "Please?"Oka said.
And ears, especially to the whispers. There really was a discovery to be made here, something incredible that would surely make them more noticed, more important then anyone else! And one of the things that hose whispers promised...was the black. The oil that seeped from a gembounds body when it died. There was something there, knowledge, perhaps, more then just it seemed.

Venus left the cave only for this, to hunt and find a gembound that could be melted into this oil that held so many secrets. They stepped into Canis, senses alert for something small that even they could hunt. They crouched down and stalked into the bones, until they heard a shuffling. A mouse, probably, and they leaped forward, just barely trapping it under their little claws.

With a swift bite, it squeaked and fell still and Venus sat back, waiting...

It didn't take long for it to happen, the skin and fur beginning to bubble and melt away, leaving nothing but a puddle of black oil. They hesitated, a little concerned by this. Were they sure that...this was okay? That this was safe? Well, it didn't matter - Pride was always risking his life to defend the Seven! Venus would have to do the same!

They leaned forward and licked at the liquid, nose twisting with disgust at the horrendous taste. But they forced themselves to continued, lapping it all up and choking down vomit until it was all consumed. They retched again, pressing a paw against their muzzle to stop themselves from vomiting everything they'd just eaten, before they turned and hobbled back to the tunnel to return to the altar. Perhaps more secrets would be revealed to them.
