Attikias hooked his thumbs behind the straps of his backpack like it was a pair of suspenders. He'd come prepared- a little over-prepared, maybe, but he didn't know what a Trial entailed. It... Unlocked, something of your's? What did it test? Attikias had some sort of combat in mind, not entirely certain about the specifics of it. Was it like Hydra..?

In any case, he tightened his armor as he continued around Polaris, standing tall as he looked for-- a door? Some part of his memory recalled it, about it being opened with magic? But, what if he didn't do magic? So, he'd put off actually taking some Trial, uncertain if he'd need to know magic for it.

But, this would be fine. He wanted to talk to- who was it, Emuh?- anyways, and he was already fiddling with his bracer again, worrying. Would he have to cast spells? He wasn't good at spells. He could make something (he should have made something) but maybe it was like the Collector- not a show and tell, and rather a request.

In truth, he didn't know much about Trials. But, as he stopped before the door, Attikias hesitated. He wanted to learn, but with how little magic he actually used, it set a dread in his heart. What would Emuh ask him to do? He couldn't reliably cast for them. He just wanted to get it over with, really, and he could feel his hands clasping together as he paced a little.

<y>"Emuh?"</y> It took a little bit to work up the nerve, calling out into Polaris proper for the being.

Attikias had his work cut out for him. He'd been back and forth from here and Fornax a little in the time that the Blacksmith waited for the key- and now, he'd started work on an idea of his. This time might work, after all, after the few failed lantern-like styles that were a bit too hard to hold easily or control. This time, though, he had the idea, he had the plan, and he had the dowel for it. Something thick enough to hold in one hand, and it wasn't too clumsy.

Of course, this relied on the fact that someone with hands would be down there. Or, at least someone with a thumb- but, surely there may be. If not, then he'd go. Even if he didn't want to. He had his family to take care of, he kept saying in his mind, and he had plans. He wanted to talk to Emuh, even- he'd heard about the owl from a while back, here or there somewhere, and he wondered if he held trials for people who just made things. Would it be like an appraisal? He could make something and bring it to him, maybe, but then that'd be against the spirit of the challenge.

But, Ursa. He'd never heard anything back from it, and he worried. Without him there, would it be okay? The aquatic creatures down there... Attikias shook his head, shutting his eyes and sighing out through his nose. He'd see. Maybe, he could make a bet with himself, about going if there wasn't a handed person there. That'd work.

Besides, he didn't do water.

Shaking his head, Attikias returned to his work, having hollowed out the center of this rod, gotten it all ready. The back was thick enough with a hole for string, so the thing wouldn't be lost to the depths or stolen or anything. Now, he had a bunch of fiddly parts to do, and he squinted down.

He had the things to make them out of, but he had to connect them. A sort of wheel, tied to something that rotated? And then moved a series of slats back.

But, as he constructed the thing, it wasn't working- or, he couldn't really fit it into the wood and get a glowing bit, and that frustrated him. Grumbling, he sat hunched over his workplace, a mess of failed projects strewn about.

most of this is just fishing, sorry. here's where the more aw relevant stuff starts

Attikias's mind was silent as he'd worked on fishing hooks, scrimshawing them out of toes and smaller bones of the smaller Lessers his family ate. Cord had long been bad strong enough to resist pulling, and a wooden branch from the same material he'd made his bow out of was perfect for a fishing rod.

It wasn't the first time he'd had fish. Far from it, really, as he usually used more physical traps- but, if baiting normal land animals worked, then surely baiting for fish would too? He had a pot of bugs he'd just caught, ready to pierce onto the hook and cast out into one of Eridanus's deeper rivers.

He hadn't fished in here for a while- he wasn't the biggest fan of the fish texture, he had to admit, but he'd been wanting to cook it again to try and negate that slimy texture and get something else in his diet. But, with fishing rod in hand and a satchel full of supplies in the other, he was ready to try.

As the bag's strap bobbed on Attikias's raw shoulder (he'd decided to go shirtless, today), he resisted the temptation to walk in the warm water of Eridanus- he'd eyed it, of course, and yet he needed to find a spot with enough fish. A large swell had created a thick, lazy part of the river, and it was fairly deep. With silty waters of the jungle, he couldn't accurately gauge what had fish and what didn't- but, this seemed like a place they'd like, right? Here, he shouldn't go swimming and just scare them all away.

Setting his tool down, Attikias stripped himself of the satchel carefully and squatted down, balancing the rod on his leg and lilting his fingers to the top of it. He'd had a hole set into the wood- here, he'd tie the line in, and make sure it didn't snap. Looking to his other side, the elf opened his satchel (and frowned as the leather strap dipped into the water), taking out the various wood-paper coverings and the bag of hooks. Beneath it all were the various strands for rope.

He pulled one out, carefully, and tied it to the end of the rod like threading it thought the eye of a needle, securing it and giving it a tug. Yeah, that was good enough. Returning to the satchel, he pulled out a wooden ball he'd carved, and a piece of metal that had rusted a long time ago. These went on, too- a float and a sinker- before he tied on one of his bone hooks to the very end.

He'd made enough of each of these to replace, if this plan didn't work out, but he'd have to replace the rod entirely if that broke. Frowning, Attikias ran his fingers over it again, scratching gently at it with a nail. He could have painted it- but, it might need that bend to not snap. He wouldn't dye his bow, after all.

He soon finished off the whole procedure with a bug stuck onto the hook, and he stood up, bringing the fishing rod with him. Now, just to cast the line- and he jostled the rod in place a little, the bobber barely moving with the length of the line. Unsure of just how to do it, he turned the rod to the side, then raised it up, eyeing it all the while- the line trailed in the dirt, then the shoreline, and he rumbled with uncertainty.

Well, he might as well try. Raising up the rod vertically, Attikias let the line fall back behind it before snapping it forward. The line- hook and all- was easily propelled- and Attikias grinned, getting the idea as the line hit near the middle of the river.

Maybe this would be easier than he would have thought.

Cerilaine hadn't been in Leo for long, and she didn't know where to start. Attikias's words were vague enough to set her off in some direction and yet none at all- with all of Leo to search, perhaps she'd never find the key.

Breathing in, Cerilaine stretched herself out from a rest in an ocean cave, set into a cliff on the beach. Perhaps it'd be nice to find someplace to stay for good, just like she said with Cygnus, and yet it just didn't seem right for her. Having a place to return would mean she'd be tied there, like she had to upkeep it. This way, she could go where she want, and sleep where she wanted.

She wondered, briefly, what it would be like to miss her home.

Stepping into the warm sands of Leo's bay, Cerilaine let out a hot breath and shook herself out, grumbling at the heat of the burning bulbs and surrounding sea. Back to the search- and Cerilaine pushed her magic out, reaching into the surrounding area.

Despite feeling the twinge of magic at the back of her mind, there was nothing- and she closed her eyes, huffing out. Fine, she'll continue on, and she padded down the beach at a casual pace. The water lapped by her feet as she walked, and she was content.

The child--growing, now, and promising enormous size--was half-hunched studiously over a large, flat stone. He was fairly certain that the helm was formed of dragonscales, but he couldn't be sure.

Ember had spent a great deal of time cleaning this helmet--slowly washing and wiping away years of grime--and trying out different linings to try and pad it. Dirt had been one attempt, and Pride, though he'd raised a brow, hadn't said anything. Rock hadn't worked. Dried grass and tufts of his own shedding puppy-fur were now being packed carefully in by white claws, Ember's flameglow eyes fixed on his work. He was oblivious to the stag's presence, and Pride took the moment to study him.

Fireheart was strong in him. He was white, sharing his stone-giver's eyes, general features; but the dragon Dread was clear in him too, with spines and wings and heavy tail. He was still a cub, or was that a hatchling?--with oversized limbs and childish proportions, his eyes and ears far too large for his face. But the concentration in his features was entirely adult. There was no frivolous play, with Ember; he was slow and steady, his thoughts and words not stupid but rarely given without forethought.

Pride, despite sharing no true magic, stone or "blood" with him, loved him. He was alone, more often than not. He sat alone. Didn't speak all that much. Was he all right? How was he feeling..?
But, some part of him yearned. Wanted to know just why he hated Cetus, again, and to see if he actually remembered any of it. Would he find his chrysalis? Probably not- that would have been long buried in the mud, by now, and Attikias grimaced at the thought.

Here he was, in the middle of Cetus, with nothing to show for it.

The elf sighed, briefly, feeling his legs squelch in the mud as he continued on through the room. As far as he was aware, only one tunnel led into it- but there may have been something he missed, after all, or maybe things to find. But what could a disgusting mire even have, and how would he even find it?

Grimacing, Attikias pressed on into relatively drier ground, where he could wade in mud that didn't go past his knees. His hands ran idly on the trees as he passed through them, eyes in the branches as he struggled to find anything he could bring home.

His hand paused on a rock, embedded into a tree long ago. It was shimmeringly blue- pretty, to him, and something that wholly didn't belong in this place. One issue: he probably couldn't try to take it out from the tree that encased it. He gave it a passing tug, and with it not budging at all, he quickly gave up, not willing to spend time on something he could easily tire himself out over.

It wasn't worth it in Cetus, anyways.

Another day, another project, as it was often for Attikias. Today's project- nothing special, he thought, especially since it was more Thalia's forte. He'd gotten some help from her in terms of what sounded good or didn't, but here he sat with his instrument board, plucking away for some sort of tune to show the others.

He thought it sounded good so far, albeit a little repetitive, but it gave him something to focus on rather than other things. Vivilene, in particular, was on his mind a lot-- and maybe that wasn't fair. But, all of his other kids seemed to be able to take care of themselves (and some violently so), but Vivilene was... Fragile. Like a piece of gossamer.

Anne was like that too, somewhat, but Attikias didn't think she'd ever show it. He needed to make some sort of lotion for her- there were the flowers James had brought, and he'd used them as soap more than enough times, but something thicker would be good for her skin.

And then there was Hunter, always getting into scrapes, and Attikias always healed him up from some sort of tumble, no matter how small. Maybe he doted too much, but Hunter was always wandering, so it was always a treat to have him back every once in a while.

Attikias looked up to the cave ceiling through the veil of leaves, squinting to the bulb that lay far above. But, yes- it was Vivilene he was worried about, her friendliness to monstrous beings and general sense of awkwardness. Not that he'd tell her that, of course- how could he? No, sighing, Attikias looked back down to his instrument and continued plucking minutely. It was coming along- of course it was- but something still felt missing.

A lot of things felt missing.

Attikias frowned, minutely, huffing out gently through his nose.

Attikias's hands were not idle. They couldn't be, when he was anxious about generally everything. It was okay, he had told himself many, many times, but that didn't stop his body from struggling to keep active. Maybe he should make something. That calmed him down, sometimes-- maybe, after that, he could go camping, or something. Pegasus was lovely- he could spend a couple of days there, pack away stuff from this camp in a big backpack and just go.

Problem one, he wanted to wait for Vivilene. She'd gone out around Eridanus before, and he'd been gone when she came back, so maybe that wasn't that bad of an issue. Still, what if she missed him? ... What if she left because she didn't want to see him anymore?

He shook his head. No, don't think about that. Think about problem two: he needed to have something more than just a satchel to carry things. A satchel was good, yes, but it only got so far- he needed a way to carry heavier things. A backpack came to mind- he'd been thinking on it for some time before able to solidify the idea of what it would look like. Two loops over his shoulders, the weight supported by his back- a strap over his front, like the harness he made for Vivilene? Hm.

Maybe he could make something like that for her, for when she returned- if she did, while he was gone. She had more surface, so maybe a backpack on her deer back would be good, some form of modified saddle for her. He'd like to make it special- maybe take the gentle curve of her gem and do something like that for the clasp, if he had the buttons for it.

He was certain he did- with a mix of scavenging and commissions from Dip, he tended to have enough miscellaneous parts for whatever he needed to craft. Buckles wouldn't be too hard in the very least- but it may be awkward if Vivilene wanted to strap it onto herself. Maybe it could strap over her back? But, would that weight be bad on the clasp itself and bend it? Attikias rumbled to himself as he meandered about the camp, interacting with the various denizens as he went. It was clear he was in one of his working moods- he was quiet, not particularly initiating conversations as much as he would otherwise. His mind was elsewhere- blueprints formed in his head, and he eyed the materials he already had, placing things mentally where they'd need to be.

Well, first things first. Gather the materials for both projects and put them in one place- the saddlebag first, probably. That was easy- a buckle and two clasps. The backpack, however, was likely to need a bunch of string- he had a lot of rawhide rope he could use to tie flaps shut, maybe, and a few extra buckles in case he made it too big. Actually, that'd be good, in case someone else wanted to use it, maybe. There was one buckle he could use that didn't have a dangly bit in the middle, and he had that- he just needed to cut the leather to fit them.

With his hands full, Attikias placed the items on the workbench, his leather pile sitting nearby. Kicking the stool closer without looking, Attikias sat and laid his hands on the rough wood, getting his bearings.

<n>wolfwood</n>
<l>the endless</l>

His consciousness bubbled forth like the release of air from a snorkel, clumped together in a big burst and followed by trails of thoughts and senses. The fluid that surrounded him was tepid; once, it might have been hot. In fact, it was almost as if he remembered it being hot. Remember...?

A crack in the small kunzite chrysalis pierced his thoughts—thoughts?—and in the blink of an eye, the lavender chunk shattered under the growing pressure within. Small and weak, the marten kit was spit unceremoniously from his crystal womb and he fought the air that threatened his lungs. In the end, the need for air won, and he coughed up fluids to make room for it. It was cold out here. He felt himself shiver and he shook to loosen his fur of the sticky stuff that clung to it.

Finally, his eyes opened: a sheen of silver and white. The pink-purple glow of the area surrounding him was enough to keep him quiet for only a moment as he took in the beauty of it, and of his own chrysalis shards that glimmered like treasure in the shimmering light of the tunnel. Beyond the doorway was similar lighting, and it beckoned to him like the allure of a siren's song.

In the back of his head whispered a knowing, a title, a name: Samael. Sam.

Sam.

He felt a wanting hole growing in his chest. 'Sam' didn't feel adventurous enough. The marten kit shuffled through pieces of his chrysalis to collect the best shard, then sat back on his hind legs and held the kunzite chunk tightly in his paws, close to his chest.

What was adventurous? He would know. He decided then, that he would know. He didn't know now, but he would come to know it. Adventure was his purpose; he decided this too in that same moment. He would be an adventurer. He would collect treasures like the piece of his chrysalis. He would be...

Samael?

"Sam?" whispered his voice.

Tiny, rounded ears flicked at the sound of it. No, he did not like it. It did not sound like the name of an adventurer. But, it was who he was. It was special. His little finger-toes shifted over the facets of the kunzite piece. Sam. This was Sam. Special. Close. Secret.

So what was the name of an adventurer? Who would take Sam on these adventures?

Wolf... the brief, flashing image of a monster with teeth. He did not know Wolf, but something deep in his mind did. Wolf was scary. Wolf was probably strong, too. Wolf could adventure. Wolf was running through the trees in this brief flash of consciousness. Was it memory? Or simply the primordial definition of Wolf filling in blanks he did not know himself? Wolf in the Woods.

"Wolf... wood." Yeah. Yeah!

"Wolfwood!" he declared to nobody but himself, shoving the shard of his chrysalis between his teeth and loping up to the massive entry that separated Gemini from the tunnel. Whatever was in there, he'd know. He didn't know now... but he would come to know it.

Like right now, for example. He was currently bounding around Canis, chasing rats and snapping at bone moths, having one hell of a time running around like he owned the place.

His gaze caught on something else and his tail started to wag, eyes zeroing in on a rabbit.
He bolted after it, barking loudly and chasing it through the tunnels, his ears down against his head to avoid the wind catching in them. He lunged over obstacles, nearing the rabbit, only to squeal as it ran into a hole in the wall and his paws failed to stop him in time.
So now he had a bloody nose (again) and a bruised ego and nothing to show for it. Great.
